We are nearing March, which means that while it's still too early for brackets, we can officially start dreaming about Cinderellas and Final Fours. This year's Duke team gives Coach Mike Krzyzewski a remarkably balanced blend of talent and perhaps the best player he's ever had in his 35-year tenure in Durham. In the mix once again, the Blue Devils are hoping to move beyond last season's shocking and embarrassing round-of-64 exit at the hands of Mercer.

Let's examine five reasons Duke, currently sitting at 21-3, could cut down the nets come that first Monday night in April.

GUARD PLAY

tyus jones quinn cook

Deep runs in March are fueled by great guard play -- just look at last year's champ, Connecticut, who underperformed most of the season only to win six straight en route to a title behind the brilliant duo of Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright. Duke has a similar pair of playmakers in senior Quinn Cook (right) and freshman Tyus Jones (left). The beauty of these two is that akin to Napier and Boatright, they can both play on and off the ball, and they can both really create opportunities in late shot clock situations. Jones tends to act as the lead guard, and his dynamic creativity in pick-and-roll is downright prodigious. His 5.3 assists per game ranks him second in the ACC and, despite his youth, he has already become an extension of Krzyzewski on the floor. Best of all? Cook -- whom Krzyzewski continually calls his team's leader -- and Jones are both superb 3-point and free-throw shooters, connecting on 40 percent of their attempts from distance. Cook and Jones convert 91 and 87 percent, respectively, from the stripe.

JAHLIL OKAFOR

jahlil okafor

Enjoy him now, because the Chicago product is going to be the top overall pick in June's NBA Draft. Okafor -- whom HuffPost caught up with last April -- is a classic big man blessed with tremendous footwork, a deft touch around the basket and disruptive shot-blocking skills. Nearly 6-foot-11, he possesses excellent hands as well and unlike most young bigs, doesn't mind passing out of double teams. But Okafor's best attribute may be the fact that he is not limited to the block. Duke uses him all over the floor. Even when he catches the ball 16 feet from the hoop, he is smart enough to make the correct decision: attack the basket, kick out or find a cutter. The only real concern with Okafor is that he sometimes gets in foul trouble, as he did in Duke's 90-60 win over No. 10 Notre Dame on Sunday. Afterward, Krzyzewski said he would have left his young superstar in the game if not for the 42-7 run his team went on. In a one-and-done format, you worry about foul trouble, but perhaps not as much with a player as intelligent as Okafor.

THE 'OTHER' FRESHMAN

justise winslow

We've addressed both Jones and Okafor, but Duke's most valuable player is often Justise Winslow, a rangy two-way wing oozing with NBA potential. Few players in the country can impact a game defensively like Winslow, whose dad enjoyed a brief NBA stint but never had the raw ability of his son. Winslow Jr., at 6-foot-6 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, can guard every position on the floor. While he is not a consistent jump shooter just yet, he has a real knack as a slasher and phenomenal finisher. The left-handed Winslow averages 11 points and gets to the free-throw line an impressive four times per game. If Okafor or Jones suffer an off-game, his attacking style will give the Blue Devils another valuable option.

THE 1K MAN

mike krzyzewski

Four national championships and the first Division 1 men's head coach ever to reach the 1,000-win mark, Krzyzewski has all of the big-game experience you'd ever want. In attending Duke's 90-60 drubbing of Notre Dame, what struck me about Krzyzewski was how he coached each possession as if the score was 0-0. It was almost as if the game itself didn't matter so much as the preparation for what does matter: March. This is not a classically deep Duke team -- they have just eight scholarship players -- but it is an extremely talented and diverse one. The recent dismissal of junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon opens the door for sophomore Matt Jones and freshman Grayson Allen, two blue-chip recruits who are just starting to turn it on. Krzyzewski, 67, believes strongly in man-to-man defense, but his willingness to adapt to his personnel and shift to zone is also worth noting. He will employ the zone to protect Okafor from foul trouble, but just as importantly, his team rebounds exceptionally well out of the zone. Krzyzewski's ability to exploit every advantage possible will be most important against foes like Kentucky, Virginia and Wisconsin. He has a very well-balanced offensive attack that averages a healthy 80 points per game while ranking sixth in the country in total field goal percentage, making almost 50 percent of its attempts.

BATTLE-TESTED

duke

What the ACC lost in charter school member Maryland's departure to the Big Ten, it gained in perennial powers Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Pittsburgh. Fourth-ranked Duke, who always endures a brutal non-conference schedule, has the most impressive resume in America. And that comes with all due respect to undefeated Kentucky. The Blue Devils boast wins over Michigan State, Temple, Stanford, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, St. John's, Notre Dame and Virginia. While regular season success hardly guarantees tournament success, Coach K's young squad has a barrage of quality wins over legit contenders. March Madness is all about survive and advance, and that's what this team has done all year long.

.............................................................................................................

Favorite time of year for wagering on sports is March Madness.

I have always watched more Duke games than others.

Kentucky might have a say in the final four outcome.

Close call at LSU though.

undefeated.

That's where we are with No. 1 Kentucky. After close calls against Ole Miss and Texas A&M early in the SEC schedule, a semi-close call at Florida Saturday, and a super-close call at LSU on Tuesday night, it's not hard to find analysts (among them ESPN's Jay Williams) casting about for a counterintuitive answer to the obvious talking-point question about the Wildcats. Will they lose a game? And if so, when?

The obvious answer involves scanning the schedule for road games against solid-to-good, top-40-ish teams. It's always harder to win on the road in conference play, right? The problem is that Kentucky has cleared almost all of those obvious hurdles now, and there's only one more of this type left: March 3 at Georgia.

The more creative answer -- one J-Will mentioned on the air after the win at LSU -- involves Kentucky losing at home. This should be unthinkable. But because the Rebels nearly struck down Goliath in Rupp Arena on Jan. 6, it at least feels conceivable. One game sticks out: Feb. 28, versus a running, pressing Arkansas team.

The logic makes sense, when you think about it: On the road, Kentucky gets up for the challenge. It thrives off the crowd, embraces the chance to deny an opponent its court-storming glory, engages on every possession. At home, perhaps, the Wildcats might feel invincible. Or more relaxed. More casual. Maybe, just maybe, you can sneak up on them.

Once you get to this point, it's not that much of a stretch to extend this to, say, Saturday afternoon -- when a 12-11 South Carolina team arrives in Lexington, Kentucky (2 p.m. ET on ESPN) for what everyone, probably even the Gamecocks, assumes will be a thrashing. Think of it this way: According to ESPN's BPI projections, Kentucky has a 95.8 percent chance of beating Arkansas on Feb. 28. It has a 98.8 percent chance of winning against Frank Martin's team Saturday. So if you think there's even a slight possibility that Kentucky's undefeated-season-ending loss could come in Rupp Arena, you're already buying in to laughably tiny odds. Why not get crazy? Why not go all the way?

If Kentucky beats South Carolina on Saturday, the Wildcats will have matched the best start in school history, which came in 1954.
This is the part where we remind you that we're not actually being serious. Kentucky may not be a guarantee to finish the regular season undefeated (BPI puts those odds at about 70 percent), but the Wildcats are impossible to pick against in any one game. The LSU win was a perfect demonstration: The Tigers did about everything right for, oh, 38 minutes -- they made shots, weathered runs, rebounded, all of it -- but because the Wildcats are so versatile on the defensive end and so relentless on the offensive glass, less-than-perfect execution cost the Tigers their upset. Against this Kentucky team, you have to play almost perfectly just to make it a close game. And then, once it is close, and every possession is tight, perfection is the minimum requirement. UK is to college basketball what "Dark Souls" is to video games: You can do everything right and you still might not win.

Which is why the Wildcats are 24-0 and never really look like they're going to lose even when they trail late on the road, and why, in casting about for that potential first loss, conventional responses just don't cut it. When a team is this great, you've got to get creative.
......................................................................................................

these are not my words as anyone with any sense knows.

Trying to get into the minds of the Kentucky team and see if they have the heart and wherewithall to win it all this year.

Can they go undefeated the rest of the way.

The game at Tennessee coming up could be a stumbling block.

Who really cares. It will tell us if they have the right mentality to cut down the nets after March Madness is over.

Alot of hoops left to play.

March Madness..... Got to love it.

I smell money and it smells green.

I am real interested in the Butler Vs Villanova game

Butler is 12-1 at home, and the Wildcats will be the highest-ranked team to visit the storied gym since the Bulldogs lost to No. 3 DePaul on Feb. 23, 1981. Villanova has won all three meetings since Butler joined the Big East, including a 76-73 overtime victory in its first trip to Hinkle on Dec. 31, 2013.

Now is the time for homework.

It will pay off in the end.

March Madness 2013

8 - 2 + $ 1,575.00

80%

.................................................. ...................

Losing Ware was a big blow but man did the Cardinals come out to play in that second half.

I have seen games this year, where Duke folded the same way against Superior guard play. Damn their guards are slashing and fast as hell.

Play or go home. See ya Dukies.

As much as I follow and like Duke I know when to throw in the chips with them.

March Madness 2014

Well that was a rough game to watch as Kentucky came out cold and just could not do much
with Wisconsin's defense.

In looking at the last game Monday I have decided that in the past I get in wagering trouble after
getting alot of wins during the March Madness tournament and then giving it back to the book
playing all in for the last game.

The last game for the Championship is always a toss up as they are the best of the best.
It is very difficult to pick the winner of this game.

So I am sitting that game out, keeping my winnings for football, and just watching the game.

Love March Madness

Duke Vs Syracuse

Duke wins by the 6 points in a away game .

The thing I take away from this game is the guard play is not outstanding as in past Duke teams. They don't have that one stand out go to guy from what I see.

But the big point for me about this game was when Okafur and Plumbee the two 7 fts were in the game at the same time they did not clog up the middle. Syracuse ran through and past them in the paint. And in the paint is where championships are won come March Madness.

Duke will get to 12 teams easily. Duke getting to final 4 is remote to me. They have weakness that can be exposed too easily by the top teams.

Villanova beats Butler

Darrun Hilliard is a stud and reliable shooter. (8) 3 pointers and 31 points.
He carried Nova and won it at the end.

Hard game to watch as both defenses are good.

The big takeaway for me is that Butler has the big body's under the basket but they have not had the big athletic body's under the basket in years. They push around well and block out, but as far as intimidating the big boys and offensive rebounds
.... nope.

Villanova on the other hand can be a team to contend with in March Madness.
They play strong defense , run the court well, and pass the ball to open shooters.
Good team play by them.

Butler: Starting forward Andrew Chrabascz left with a right hand injury with 15:33 left in the second half, then returned and finished the game. Holtmann told reporters that Chrabascz was in pain after the game and would have X-rays on the hand. Holtmann was still awaiting word from the team doctor about the extent of the injury.

no way Butler does the deep Cinderella dance into March Madness.

Coach Tony Bennett has instilled a defense-first mentality that has resonated so effectively with No. 2 Virginia that his team seems to prefer being on that end of the floor with the game on the line.

The Cavaliers appear to be in for a tough test Monday night against a visiting Pittsburgh team coming off a season-best offensive performance that toppled another ranked ACC foe.

Virginia (23-1, 11-1) is allowing the fewest points per game in the nation at 50.9 and ranks third in defensive field-goal percentage at 35.7. After a rare halftime deficit at home, the Cavaliers got a steal from Malcolm Brogdon in the final seconds Saturday to preserve a 61-60 win over Wake Forest.

They've won four straight since falling to No. 4 Duke at home Jan. 31, with the last three coming by a total of 10 points.
......................................................................................................

First time I will have watched Virginia at 7 PM start tonight.

The Line is Virginia -11.

If they are big and bad defense , they will beat Pitt by this number.

Should be interesting.

Well Virginia came through and beat them by the -11

The only thing is , they have hella time scoring themselves.

I know their best player is out , but the others have to step up.

Kentucky would just blow their doors off at this stage of the season.
Kentucky plays good defense and can knock it down on offense.

Offense, Virginia, March Madness .............:scared

Tennessee has a chance to pull off a huge upset tonight.

They have the...

but they got......hmm.

Tenn terrible at home mostly.

Ok it's going to be a rout.

lets see if Kentucky can whack them with the big number.

I use this as a test for offense doing the homework for March Madness top teams.

The top teams have to be able to shut these type teams down on their home court
and win beating the spread or they are no good for me.

Go Big Blue
..............................................................................................................

Kentucky steps up to the plate and beats the spread.

The thing I hate about basketball in general is the final outcome and points can come very late in the game as it did in this game.

Kentucky can turn on the offense and the defense is sound.

Watched Duke Vs North Carolina last night.

This game is always close. I thought that Duke would do a much better job but they sturggled. Back and forth it went in regulation and OT.

The pair of Duke guards showed me alot in this game. Quinn Cook scored 22 points
and Jones the freshman had 22 .

Duke let a big lead slip away. I don't like that in the big picture of future games.

They were behind by 10 points with 5 min to go.

Jahlil Okafor had 12 points and 13 rebounds and he is a star. Hurt his ankle but kept on playing. When he makes his move to the basket he is definately hard to stop. Holy shit, he is a tank.

North Carolinas big guys made it hard for Duke underneath the basket.

The jury is still out for me on this Duke team taking the National Championship this year. It seems more like they get going well but they run into a team that will shut them down and beat them.

Duke plays much better at home as always.

Duke is still not defending the lane and there was way too many easy baskets from a team that just lost to Pitt.

What is the reason of this thread, with all due respect? And, you decide to post last year record for the world to see in the thread (hopefully, I am sure)? I am just asking, not trying to start anything because I see you have had a few arguments in your past with members here. Many, actually.

Is this thread ever going to see an actual wager or is this where you talk to yourself? If it is the later, sorry for interrupting your self discussion.

Very strange. Very strange, indeed. And boring. But, you got me to look.

The reason for this thread is March Madness. With all due respect you understand what that is. So you are half way home.

I post my last few years record so people that might want to follow my plays know they are not following someone that doesn't post a accurate record, posts bogus lines..... well you get the drift.

Yeh I have arguments. But I am also very capable of winning and talking about why I make the wagers I do. Alot are not interested. And if that is you then goody.

You will not see a wager in this thread. You will see my thoughts leading up to the March Madness tournament. What I am thinking about teams, the teams I like to win, and the teams that could be knocked out early.

I really don't start making plays until the big boys start to play out. Sweet Sixteen and on.

I guess I am talking to myself mostly. And that is fine with me.

very strange very strange indeed for you not to understand this is a sports blogging forum. :142smilie

Frank Kaminsky could be the best player in the country.

"Despite the loss of Traevon Jackson, the Badgers are rolling on, and have lost to only Duke (in an extraordinary Blue Devils shooting performance) and Rutgers (without Frank Kaminsky).

Kaminsky is having a remarkable season, averaging 17.5 points (on only 11 shot attempts), 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists (how many big guys average 2.5 assists?) and 1.6 blocks.

In addition, Kaminsky is shooting 54 percent from the field, 41 percent from deep and 77 percent from the line.

.....................................................................................................

really like this wisky team to go deep into the rounds.

Have only seen brief sections of games on them so far. Need to get a whole game in soon.
