OUTRIGHTS:
Phil Mickelson(10/1) e.w.
- -01.03.08:
Everything is a prelude to The Masters for as long as I've held a club in my hands. I have no hesitation in making plays on Phil Mickelson(10/1) e.w. at Augusta and (20/1) e.w. in the U.S. Open my opening salvos for the season.
- - Lefty is working on a Palmer (winning in even years of ?58, ?60, ?62 and ?64 vs. ?04 and ?06). "The area I need to spend some time is chipping and putting, and that's an area I've never really been concerned with. I am excited heading into this tournament where I feel comfortable on and around the greens." . . . He said he has been working with a putting track to make sure his stroke is right and has started rolling the ball better. "And knowing the reads, which I do for the most part after playing here so many years, will give me more confidence in my reads of the greens," he said. "I have not been reading them the greatest the last few weeks." . . . "your short game has to be impeccable because these are the most demanding greens that we'll ever face." . . . I'm not convinced his ball striking is nearly as sharp as it was coming in to Augusta in 2004 and 2006, so Phil better get things picked up with his short game.
Stuart Appleby(80/1) e.w.
- - 03.07.08:
Stuart Appleby(80/1) e.w. @ The Masters
- - His season began sputtering the weekend after I made the play, naturally. But, his record is significantly better than most when paired with Tiger, and he partnered Cabrera on Sunday at Oakmont, so there?s a sliver of hope that something is aligned to provide a proper spark.
Geoff Ogilvy(25/1) e.w.
- - FWIW, coming from an Ogilvyaholic: One cool customer, knows full well this here gap in Australian golf and embraces a chance to charge into the breech and set things right, and mama says his game suits the place like just about no one else?s.
Padraig Harrington(25/1) e.w.
- - Quoting from my post before he won at Carnoustie last year: "Harrington's schedule and preparation so frequently seem wildy off the mark for peaking at the majors he speaks so articulately about, but I think he's hit much the right notes coming into this one for getting untracked and then taking it deep" . . . I'm certain he's not wildly off the mark this time, either, and Padraig has not disappointed in the least when I had him marked in 2006 and 2007 as easily the best suited among the European's for Augusta's slopes and surfaces . . . Now Augusta has become another premiere example of the grind of a major championship, and Padraig's gone out and (hopefully) acquired the wisdom of patience to enhance his already signature grinding spirit.
Fred Couples(90/1) e.w.
- - On my short list for Augusta, St. Andrews and Riviera except when there's a reason he shouldn't be. This time around, . . .
Lee Westwood(66/1) e.w.
- - I've been judicious so far this season, but I have sipped from the kool-aid, and have read this Spice Boy well enough in the past to have been with him in both outrights AND as Top European at Troon in 2004 (notwithstanding his having been paired with Woods the first two days) . . . "Westwood arrives at the Augusta National in the best physical condition of his career, a factor that could be crucial should he find himself in the hunt at the weekend . . . "Yeah (I'm in the best physical shape of my career), but not good enough for any naked shots in any magazines," he added . . . "It's difficult to tell whether lack of fitness has cost me in the past - it's unquantifiable. In golf, there are so many different factors that come into it . . . Mental fatigue might be brought on by not being fit enough or by not eating enough. Now when I come off the course I feel I can play again. I feel stronger, and it's easy to get my body into positions where I can control things. . . I feel well prepared and closer to a major than ever."" . . . ?Westwood in my view is playing and swinging better than ever. He has solved some weak links in his swing (and his short game) and his game is looking very solid. He has to be seen as a huge contender this weekend (if the Europeans have anything going for them at Augusta after Padraig's breakthrough)."
Tiger Woods(+130) Win Only
- - Insurance against for the umpteenth time in a row.
John Senden(10/1)(1/5 for 1-2-3-4) for Top Debutante
- - I really miss capping and playing the specialty markets at a major - it's not the same "kid in a candy store" thing (and not worth the effort) when Win Only is the only play offered. My two favorites have always been 1st Round Leader of the U.S. Open and Top Masters Debutante, but success has come across the board when something stands out . . . Maybe worth the study again one of these years, here in the land of the free.
