- - I?ve been wagering and posting on golf since January of 2002, and gone about posting without developing too many phobias about how to jinx myself. In my posts I?ve noted at a clip of more than once a year that posting my plays has been the best internal governor imaginable in bringing discipline to my wagering, and that my enjoyment and most valuable contribution lies in figuring out some encapsulated version for offering INFORMATION and ANGLES with something that engages some thought (from ?I think not? to a lightbulb that says ?Ah, exactly?) and might contain some kernel worth storing away for something long term regardless of any more immediate reward; I?ve also noted with regularity that my ?this is what I?ve got to offer? capping just don?t gets done until late, whether it?s a Wednesday night or a Sunday morning . . . Since January of 2002, my one proven ?slump buster? has been to "get mad dog mean" and just keep my mouth shut and focus extra time and all my available time on capping - it?s never let me down (and add here a mention that spouting much of anything is somewhere from hollow to lame when crap follows). We were still on the West Coast when I started buying into the first part of that equation, keeping my mouth shut, but I can?t claim I?ve gone full tilt stepping up my time spent capping, and the slump persists. Particularly troubling when my seasonal MO has always involved making a profit through the Masters, and then giving some of the profit back in the months after the Masters; going forward from a deficit situation has me apprehensive about my ability to quit sucking at life anytime soon . . . Letting what to me were very ?gettable? winners get away in the cases of Kaymer and McDowell in Europe, and Chopra, Holmes, and Ogilvy in the States (and O?Hair and Romero were almost in the same league) has been bad enough, but that comes with the territory - it?s the excessive number of full-shit clunkers that tell me something ain?t been going right . . . The most interesting aspect of my season to date is a no-brainer: my winners over the years have come almost exclusively from being very much in the mix after 36 holes and feature very few comebacks - no surprise that this season features Arjun Atwal as my lone bright spot, after charging back from 7 shots down on Sunday in Malaysia . . . Anyway, I can be a good sport about the Masters, although my present expectations are not conducive to being rewarded with good golf, then it?s back to my cave till I feel like coming back out again . . .

tick . . . tick . . . tick . . .

OUTRIGHTS:

Phil Mickelson(10/1) e.w.
- -01.03.08:
Everything is a prelude to The Masters for as long as I've held a club in my hands. I have no hesitation in making plays on Phil Mickelson(10/1) e.w. at Augusta and (20/1) e.w. in the U.S. Open my opening salvos for the season.
- - Lefty is working on a Palmer (winning in even years of ?58, ?60, ?62 and ?64 vs. ?04 and ?06). "The area I need to spend some time is chipping and putting, and that's an area I've never really been concerned with. I am excited heading into this tournament where I feel comfortable on and around the greens." . . . He said he has been working with a putting track to make sure his stroke is right and has started rolling the ball better. "And knowing the reads, which I do for the most part after playing here so many years, will give me more confidence in my reads of the greens," he said. "I have not been reading them the greatest the last few weeks." . . . "your short game has to be impeccable because these are the most demanding greens that we'll ever face." . . . I'm not convinced his ball striking is nearly as sharp as it was coming in to Augusta in 2004 and 2006, so Phil better get things picked up with his short game.

Stuart Appleby(80/1) e.w.
- - 03.07.08:
Stuart Appleby(80/1) e.w. @ The Masters
- - His season began sputtering the weekend after I made the play, naturally. But, his record is significantly better than most when paired with Tiger, and he partnered Cabrera on Sunday at Oakmont, so there?s a sliver of hope that something is aligned to provide a proper spark.

Geoff Ogilvy(25/1) e.w.
- - FWIW, coming from an Ogilvyaholic: One cool customer, knows full well this here gap in Australian golf and embraces a chance to charge into the breech and set things right, and mama says his game suits the place like just about no one else?s.

Padraig Harrington(25/1) e.w.
- - Quoting from my post before he won at Carnoustie last year: "Harrington's schedule and preparation so frequently seem wildy off the mark for peaking at the majors he speaks so articulately about, but I think he's hit much the right notes coming into this one for getting untracked and then taking it deep" . . . I'm certain he's not wildly off the mark this time, either, and Padraig has not disappointed in the least when I had him marked in 2006 and 2007 as easily the best suited among the European's for Augusta's slopes and surfaces . . . Now Augusta has become another premiere example of the grind of a major championship, and Padraig's gone out and (hopefully) acquired the wisdom of patience to enhance his already signature grinding spirit.

Fred Couples(90/1) e.w.
- - On my short list for Augusta, St. Andrews and Riviera except when there's a reason he shouldn't be. This time around, . . .

Lee Westwood(66/1) e.w.
- - I've been judicious so far this season, but I have sipped from the kool-aid, and have read this Spice Boy well enough in the past to have been with him in both outrights AND as Top European at Troon in 2004 (notwithstanding his having been paired with Woods the first two days) . . . "Westwood arrives at the Augusta National in the best physical condition of his career, a factor that could be crucial should he find himself in the hunt at the weekend . . . "Yeah (I'm in the best physical shape of my career), but not good enough for any naked shots in any magazines," he added . . . "It's difficult to tell whether lack of fitness has cost me in the past - it's unquantifiable. In golf, there are so many different factors that come into it . . . Mental fatigue might be brought on by not being fit enough or by not eating enough. Now when I come off the course I feel I can play again. I feel stronger, and it's easy to get my body into positions where I can control things. . . I feel well prepared and closer to a major than ever."" . . . ?Westwood in my view is playing and swinging better than ever. He has solved some weak links in his swing (and his short game) and his game is looking very solid. He has to be seen as a huge contender this weekend (if the Europeans have anything going for them at Augusta after Padraig's breakthrough)."

Tiger Woods(+130) Win Only
- - Insurance against for the umpteenth time in a row.

John Senden(10/1)(1/5 for 1-2-3-4) for Top Debutante
- - I really miss capping and playing the specialty markets at a major - it's not the same "kid in a candy store" thing (and not worth the effort) when Win Only is the only play offered. My two favorites have always been 1st Round Leader of the U.S. Open and Top Masters Debutante, but success has come across the board when something stands out . . . Maybe worth the study again one of these years, here in the land of the free.

MATCHUPS:

All 4 have moved significantly, so shoot me for posting them:

Stricker(-125)(or -160) over Johnson (Tournament)
Ogilvy(-120)(or -130) over Scott (Tournament)
Westwood(-110)(or - 120) over Stenson (Tournament)
T.Watson(-135)(or -160) over Campbell (Tournament)

no scoring props which have always been my fav wagers during masters.

Last years cold windy high scoring event killed the #'s on scoring props--which has generally been easy money each year. Normally #'s 70 and 71 and 72.

Will grade these Props @ conclusion as Stan will have his hands full. :)

Round 1 plays (2pts):

Stewart Cink to beat Lee Westwood -120 @ Bet365
Westwood's poor form around Augusta National can be illustrated by one statistic: Cink has a 8-0-0 h2h record against him in the 1st round here

Justin Rose to beat Henrik Stenson -129 @ Pinnacle [also available at Unibet, Carib and WSEX]
Justin Rose to beat Padraig Harrington -110 @ Five Dimes
Backing Rose who typically starts fast and has been dominant head-to-head against these two players when on the PGA Tour

Jim Furyk to beat Steve Stricker -125 @ Bet365
Vijay Singh to beat Steve Stricker -127 @ Pinnacle [also available at Carib and WSEX]
Stricker has been in good form, but not around this course. He has admitted that he struggles to putt on these greens so may miss the cut again this year

Stuart Appleby to beat Angel Cabrera -102 @ Unibet
With top-10 finishes in his last three starts, Appleby is by far the more in-form player and he should beat Cabrera who has struggled this year
