What you have said is correct, but your conclusions are incorrect. I dare you to analyze games with double digit point spreads only....I GUARANTEE YOU WILL FIND A DIFFERENT RESULT.

This is why trends are dangerous. You cannot take a set of data that have millions of factors, and summarily apply it to a game that has only a few in common with the data.

Hope most where smart enough to figure this out. Its not brain surgury. Lines of 1-6...sure its likely that the point spread will not come into effect. But when its 10 or more. I would be willing to guess its much closer to 50% than it is 70%.

Just to set the record straight...

I'm not one to pound my own chest and rarely do I ever post my record of completed games. I also realize 1 week doesn't make a season, but ANYTIME you want to go head to head in some sort of cappin' contest, I'd be more than happy to accept the challenge. This would be extremely easy to do. How bout both of us send Jack a PayPal payment in the amount of $500-$1000. This would take less than 5 minutes and have some outside source set up the parameters of the contest. 10 games? 20 games? entire season? playoffs? etc..etc... You tell me, and I'll accomodate! Also, if this amount is not enough or too much, I'd be more than willing to agree with whatever you have in mind. If you have a Paypal account, you can see that this whole process would take less than 5 minutes. It could easily be done if Jack doesn't mind being the 3rd party involved.

-not looking to join any arguments here ...but dont know how likely that is ...
just wanted to say my thoughts on that trend ..

ironlock , and whoever put up the math , was a good point ...and serves very well .
that ten point spreads are DIFFERENT , plin and simple .

in cases of smaller threads , for arguments sake , let say under 7 .
the fact that only , say 18 percent dont cover , would mean something .

even though the math shows that this is obvious , with the fav winning and covering 1/3 , and the dog winning 1/3 and the dog only covering 1/3 lets say .

the point is that knowing that only on 20 percent of games will the dog lose and cover , is great handicapping knowledge .

basically now , say stlouis vs miami
if you dont feel that miami has atleast a 35 percent chance of winning (added with the twenty percent chance that they will lose and cover ) then youre not even getting fift five percent chance of winning your bet ...so you dont get any value ..

in short , with this knowledge , YOU WOULD NOT BET ON ANY GAME WHERE YOU THINK THAT HE UNDERDOG DOES NOT HAVE ATLEAST A DECENT CHANCE OF WINNING.

as opposed to say basketball , where its a much more value bet to take washington against la at +15.

dont knowhow clear that was ...but to those who understand , would like to hear your thoughts

of course every game is different , and therefore you have to be wary somewhat of the statistic .
for instance with miami , as a defensive team , if they were to play another defensive team (baltimore) chances are the difference in score would be minmal , and in such cases the spread would mean a hell of a lot .
whereas in a st louis vs denver matchup , your not likely to get near the spread , with such a high scoring game .

but dependednt on the game (if its average teams ) i think this statistic can be very helpful as an overll insight .
