I had my first meeting/practice today and everything went well. I was a little nervous at first considering I've never coached before, to say the least, an under 5 league. Everyone was really nice and supportive except for one parent who was extremely belligerent about how he had to break all these business meetings to get his son to practice and that he wasn't pleased that practice only lasted half an hour and that they are to be held on Mondays and Fridays. I had already changed the practice schedule 3 times already to accommodate the parents' schedules. He was flippant and rude. Basically, I had to go here to vent b/c I felt I did the best I could and that I shouldn't deserve to be spoken to like that. What should I do?

You are coaching, and volunteering your time

Why should he dictate the schedule? I could see him having this argument if you'all were co-coaching, but it's your team. You are the coach, you make the rules.

Best luck man! It's pretty tough telling a bunch of 5 year olds that playing soccer isn't just 8 people running around the ball :)

Better be prepared to play his kid the whole game and be prepared for him to maybe start a fight in the stands when you guys lose a game.

Its a tough crowd at 5 yr olds soccer games.

Your the coach not the parents, stand by what works for you, if you change for parents you will get walked all over, if they don't like it they can go home, and if they bother kids at practice or you just close it to parents and let the kids have fun, but no matter what age they are you are the coach you need to set the rules and stick to them or you will be walked over, be nice and just do it how i said, nothing worse then parents in sports with their kids till past the age of 16. from 5-10 what ever sport they are in it is more for fun and less skill work, once you get to 11 you can work in more skills. but you must take charge from the start first mistake was changing to fit first person. no more you be polite but firm. case closed.

Exactly an example as to why I won't coach kids. I'd love to (no snide remarkls needed as to why), but there's no way I could deal with the parents.

You guys think coaching is bad, you should try being a basketball official. I have and love it but had a coach who was playing for the local championship this past weekend for 3 rd graders, who decided to get all in my partners face, because we called a foul which was obvious and no time was left.

My response to him was if you want to talk about this then you need to call a timeout or we are going to go shoot Free Throws. He didn't and the kid made the first one to win the game. I would have called a timeout then, and then also the last time he had the ball with 35 seconds left.

Stupid F**kin coach! My thing is I always tell coaches like that, is hey your the one who is making an ass out of yourself in front of your kids.

This is one reason why people won't ref AAU/League Basketball

When I was a youth soccer coach two years ago I had three little punks on my team all named Jimmie. The first one was always betting the over/under on the game and was constantly pissed when his more talented teammates couldn't score enough goals for him to cover his over plays. The second was just a loud mouth punk who always picked on his Russian teammates. The third was a bench warmer who did nothing but sit around complainng about the $660.00 entry fee.

O.K. CHOP THIS IS THE LAST TIME I AM GOING TO COMMENT ON THIS FAG SPORT.IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KEEP THE PARENTS OF FAG KIDS QUITE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS HAVE A TABLE OF WINE AND CHEESE AND LET THE YUPPIE FAG PARENTS SIT AROUND AND TALK ABOUT THEMSELVES.WHEN I WAS A KID IF A PARENT GOT OUT OF HAND IT WAS HANDLED AFTER THE GAME IN THE PARKING LOT WITH A BEATING,THESE DAYS THE PARENTS ARE MORE OUTSPOKEN BECAUSE THEY ARE PROBABLY LOOKING FOR A LAWSUIT AFTER YOU KICK THERE ARSE.TELL THE PARENTS YOUR A COACH NOT A BABY SITTER AND IF YOU WANT ME TO MAKE MEN OUT OF THESE FAGS BUT OUT AND MIND YOUR OW3N BUSINESS THIS IS HOW I WOULD HANDLE THE SITUATION.JUST TELL THE PARENT WHO GOT OUT OF HAND DO YOU WANT TO FIGHT ME IN THE PARKING LOT I KNOW HE WILL BACK DOWN THEN YOU WILL HAVE THE RESPECT OF YOUR FAG TEAM.THIS IS MY LAST ADVICE ON THIS SMALL PROBLEM,

Well, the game went pretty well and the parents were pretty cool. Even though 3 out of my seven kids at one point in time, including my own daughter, cried and did not want to play. The overall results went well. It was pretty cute watching 8 kids (4 from each team) run chasing the ball all over the field. The flippant parent even appologized to me after I showed him that all I cared about was the kids and not the game. Let's hope the rest of the season goes as well. Thanks for the support fellas...
