NBA
Cavs (+11?) @ Hornets, 7:05 EST
Pick: Hornets
If you want to scare people for Halloween, dress up like a Cleveland Cavalier. That ought to send any basketball fan screaming into the night.
This is absolutely the worst team in the NBA. The Cavs may not end up with the worst record, but the difference between them, the Bulls, the Grizzlies, and the Warriors is that the Cavs have no up-and-coming stud young players. There is no one on this team besides Andre Miller who would start on another team. The Cavs' second-best player, Lamond Murray, might start, but on a good team would be a sixth man at best.
Look at the Cavs who played 19 or more minutes yesterday -- Wesley Person, Andre Miller, Jumaine Jones, Michael Doleac, Trajan Langdon, Chris Mihm, Brian Skinner, Bryant Stith. What a bunch of garbage! No wonder this team got clobbered by 19 points at home against the mediocre Boston Celtics yesterday. Cleveland was actually down by 33 after three quarters.
The schedule maker did the Cavs no favors today. Cleveland travels for its second game in two nights while Charlotte opens the season today. The Hornets are a legitimate playoff team that will finish with somewhere between 45 and 48 victories.
The Cavs will be a go-against for a while at the beginning of the season. It will be interesting to see how quickly the oddsmakers adjust to the pathetic Cavs. But if Cleveland can lose by nearly 20 at home on opening night against an average Boston team, I see no reason to expect much better on the road for a good team's home opener.
Good luck,
Mike
