Wednesday’s 6-pack:
Interesting NFL spreads this week:
— Bengals @ Baltimore (-4)
— Steelers @ Cleveland (-4)
— Cardinals @ Houston (-4)
— Chargers (-3) @ Green Bay
— Giants @ Washington (-10)
— Titans @ Jacksonville (-6.5)

Quote of the Day
“I think it’s a good reminder for all free agents considering signing in New York both foreign and domestic that to play for that team you’ve got to be made of Teflon, both mentally and physically because you can never let your guard down, even in the offseason.”
Joel Wolfe, Giancarlo Stanton’s agent

Wednesday’s quiz
In the classic movie Major League, what number did Charlie Sheen’s character (Wild Thing Vaughn) wear?

Tuesday’s quiz
Ray Malavasi coached the Rams, the first time they played in a Super Bowl (XIV)

Monday’s quiz
Pete Carroll was coach of the Patriots before Bill Belichick.

**********************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— Kansas 89, Kentucky 84
Kentucky led 48-41 at halftime, by 14 with 16:21 left to play.
Dickinson had 27 points, 21 rebounds for Kansas.
Kentucky was 12-38 on the arc, 13-38 inside the arc.
Kentucky played only eight guys; five of them are freshmen.

— Marquette 71, Illinois 64
Marquette was +7 in turnovers (15-8)
Kolek scored 24 points, grabbed six rebounds, had 4 assists.
Illinois starts four seniors; they were 11-33 on the arc.

— Duke 74, Michigan State 65
Duke was 24-30 on foul line, Spartans 7-12.
Blue Devils led by 11 at half; they shot 59% inside the arc.

— Oregon State 81, Appalachian State 71 OT
Oregon State was 13-34 on the arc, 13-30 inside arc.
Beavers are 3-0, with two of the wins in overtime.

— Western Kentucky 86, Murray State 81
WKU shot 53.7% inside arc, 8-16 on arc, scored 1.16 ppp.
Racers led by 5 with 11:23 left to play.

— Toledo 78, Wright State 77
Wright State shot 66.7% inside arc, still got beat.
Toledo played 10 guys; five freshmen, five juniors.
Good night for Toledo; their football team also won by a point.

— Cal-Irvine 70, USC 60
Impressive win for Russell Turner’s Anteaters and the Big West.
Trojans shot 26.3% from the floor; hard to win that way.

— Upsets of the Night:
Cal-Irvine (+14) 70, USC 60
Ill-Chicago (+11.5) 72, Loyola Chi 67
Santa Clara (+9.5) 89, Stanford 77
Temple (+4.5) 66, Drexel 64

— Word of the Day: continuity- the unbroken, consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time.

— Buffalo Bills fired OC Ken Dorsey Tuesday; they’ve lost three of last four games- in their last five games, they’re minus-9 in turnovers. Josh Allen has regressed at QB since the last OC left to become a head coach (Brian Daboll).
Buffalo has trailed after the first quarter in five of their last six games.

— There are 42 bowl games coming up, starting next month; lot of games on TV. As recently as 1981, there were only 15 bowl games.

— Saw a list of the six highest pointspreads in NFL history; in those six games, the underdog went 5-1 against the spread.

— So far this season, Cleveland Browns have run 166 more plays than their opponents, an average of 18.4/game. Takes a lot of strain off their defense.

— Washington Nationals DFA’d 1B Dom Smith; he hit .254 in 153 games this past season, with only 46 RBI, not a lot for a 1B.

— Milwaukee Brewers are going to name bench coach Pat Murphy their new manager; he’s been the Brewers’ bench coach since 2016. Before that, Murphy worked for the Padres for six years, and before that, he was baseball coach at Notre Dame, Arizona State.

— RIP to Padres’ owner Peter Seidler, who passed away this week at age 63. Seidler was the grandson of the late Walter O’Malley, who owned the Dodgers when they moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Seidler was a two-time cancer survivor who was well-liked in San Diego.
San Diego had the 3rd-highest payroll in baseball this year, but went 82-80 and missed the playoffs; they’re expected to cut payroll next year and right now, they’re the only MLB team without a manager for next year.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
Pitchers who have won a Cy Young in each league:
— Roger Clemens
— Roy Halladay
— Randy Johnson
— Pedro Martinez
— Gaylord Perry
— Max Scherzer
— Blake Snell

Quote of the Day
“Anyone who is great at anything does it for their own approval, not someone else’s.”

Gil Grissom, from the TV show CSI
Thursday’s quiz
In the Showtime series Ray Donovan, what famous actor played Ray’s father?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the classic movie Major League, Charlie Sheen’s character (Wild Thing Vaughn) wore number 99.

Tuesday’s quiz
Ray Malavasi coached the Rams, the first time they played in a Super Bowl (XIV)

**********************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— Browns’ QB Deshaun Watson is having shoulder surgery, is out for the year; Cleveland is starting rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson this week against the Steelers, instead of PJ Walker, which is kind of a surprise. Walker played better than DTR when Watson was hurt before.
Watson has now missed 39 games the last three years, for on/off field reasons; Cleveland owes him $138M on his deal from 2024-26, with Watson moving forward with a surgically repaired shoulder. Not ideal.

— Chicago Bears are starting QB Justin Fields this week against Detroit:
Fields has been sacked on 12.9% of his drop-backs (32nd)
Tyson Bagent has been sacked on only 3.4% of his drop-backs (1st)

— QB Justin Herbert has started 59 games for the Chargers; in those games……..
Chargers scored 1,502 points
Chargers gave up 1,502 points

— Blake Snell became the 7th pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in both leagues.

— 76ers traded James Harden to the Clippers November 1st; since then, Philadelphia is 6-2, while the Clippers are 0-6, which doesn’t make much sense, but it is what it is.

— Milwaukee Bucks are off to a 7-4 start this season; they’re only 1-9-1 against the spread.

— Word of the Day: Consultant- a person who provides expert advice professionally.

— Princeton 70, Duquesne 67- Tigers shot 67% inside the arc; they’re 3-0, with two road wins and two top 100 wins.

— Boston College 68, Richmond 61- Spiders led 28-14 early on, 34-30 at the half, but BC out-rebounded Richmond 44-31, outscored them 17-8 on foul line.

— Toledo 32, Bowling Green 31
Underdog Falcons led 28-10 at halftime.
Toledo threw a 59-yard TD pass with 1:45 left for the win.
Rockets are 10-1 this year, 7-0 in the MAC.

— Northern Illinois 24, Western Michigan 0
NIU scored on a 66-yard run, a 55-yard punt return.
Huskies were 11-16 on third down, WMU 4-13.
NIU ran ball 50 times for 287 yards.

— Eastern Michigan 30, Akron 27 OT
EMU drove 66 yards, tied game on FG with 0:10 left in regulation.
Akron was 12-19 on third down, EMU 6-14.
Eagles are 5-6; need win next week to be bowl eligible.

— Ohio 34, Central Michigan 20
Ohio took 10-0 lead on a 21-yard pick-6.
Chippewas threw TD passes of 50, 62 yards.
Bobcats averaged 9.5 yards/pass attempt.

— Miami OH 23, Buffalo 10
Miami is 9-2, 6-1 in MAC.
Buffalo completed only 7-17 passes.
Miami outrushed the Bulls, 180-131.

— Found out this week that Showtime Anytime is shutting down December 14; this isn’t good, I watched lot of shows/movies on there, shows like Billions, Ray Donovan, The Circus. Will have to do some research and find a better alternative to Showtime.
