BREAKING NEWS: Moore back in Tuscaloosa; Rodriguez meets with WVU athletic director

UPDATED 3:15 p.m. TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore landed in Tuscaloosa Wednesday afternoon ? without a coach or confirmation that he has offered West Virginia Rich Rodriguez a job as the new head football coach for the Crimson Tide.
?I don?t have anything for you guys yet,? Moore said from the passenger side of a car before driving away from the Bama Air terminal at Tuscaloosa Regional Airport.
?I think things are going well. We are just following our planned course of action.?
When asked whether he has offered Rodriguez the job to replace Mike Shula and become Alabama?s 27th head football coach, Moore said ?I don?t want to comment on any of that right now. Just give me some time, here.
?Both sides are working.?
Rodriguez, who is in his sixth year as coach of the Mountaineers, was in Morgantown, W.Va., on Wednesday.
According to the Charleston Daily Mail, Rodriguez met for two hours with WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong. Pastilong said they discussed the upcoming Gator Bowl game against Georgia Tech on Jan. 1, 2007, among other matters.
Asked if the Alabama job was discussed, Pastilong said ?I cannot talk about that, because it is a personnel issue.?
Pastilong indicated to the Daily Mail that the school may not be inclined to offer Rodriguez another raise after signing an extension in the summer that also included a raise to close to $1.1 million annually and a possibility of more than $400,000 in additional performance bonuses.
?We are like any organization or company. On June 30, we have to balance the checkbook, but we do realize we need to do everything possible to have a successful football program.?
Rodriguez?s contract includes a $2 million penalty if he leaves West Virginia before Aug. 31, 2007.
A source told the Daily Mail that, contrary to published reports earlier Wednesday, no Mountaineers assistant coaches had been pulled off the recruiting trail. Also, the University of Miami has not contacted West Virginia for permission to talk to Rodriguez about their vacancy.
Moore traveled from Teterboro Airport in suburban New Jersey to Tuscaloosa via a chartered Canadair CL-600 Challenger 604 jet. He was the only one on the plane to disembark in Tuscaloosa at 1:20 p.m. before it traveled to Montgomery later Wednesday.
Moore?s return to Tuscaloosa was not his original plan for this week. The UA athletic director was scheduled to fly from New York ? where he was attending College Football Hall of Fame ceremonies, talking with people about the Alabama vacancy and meeting with Rodriguez ? to Chicago today in order to watch the Tide?s fourth-ranked basketball team against Notre Dame on Thursday.
More on Alabama?s coaching search to come later Wednesday on www.tidesports.com, and in Thursday?s Tuscaloosa News.

Sports writer Tommy Deas contributed to this report.

Sources: UA has offered Rodriquez coaching job
West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez has an offer to become the next head football coach at the University of Alabama, sources close to the hiring process told the Press-Register today. The offer from Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore to replace the fired Mike Shula was made this morning.

Terms of the contract offer were not made available, but multiple sources familiar with the situation said it is in the neighborhood of the most lucrative in the Southeastern Conference. Auburn's Tommy Tuberville is the highest paid coach in the SEC with an annual salary of $2.2 million. That is double the $1.1 million Rodriguez currently makes per season.

Rodriguez is considering the offer, according to the sources. He was scheduled to fly to Jacksonville, Fla., today for a Gator Bowl function. A West Virginia official said the flight was scheduled to leave Morgantown at 11:30 a.m. Central Standard Time.

His answer is expected soon, perhaps as early as today. He did not immediately return a call from the Press-Register.

On Wednesday, West Virginia Athletics Director Ed Pastilong met for two hours with Rodriguez to discuss upgrades to the Mountaineers athletic facilities. "We want him to stay," Pastilong told The Associated Press.

Rodriguez, 43, has his alma mater to a 21-3 record the last two seasons and a berth in the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl against Georgia Tech.

A source close to the process said today that Moore decided late Wednesday he could not wait until after the NFL season to speak directly to Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban about the Alabama vacancy.

Saban was considered by many as Alabama's top choice for the job left vacant when Moore fired Shula on Nov. 26. The Dolphins complete their NFL season Dec. 31 at Indianapolis.

Saban rejects Alabama's offer of $25 million plus hefty bonusBy ARMANDO SALGUERO
asalguero@MiamiHerald.com
Nick Saban was offered the University of Alabama head coaching job this week, with the school trying to lure the Dolphins coach by offering a pay hike and a signing bonus for leaving Miami.

Saban has declined the offer and Thursday morning told his players he is not leaving. The coach also told owner Wayne Huizenga on Sunday he was not interested in Alabama.

After practice, he confirmed that Alabama had approached his agent, Jimmy Sexton, who thanks but no thanks. Saban also said he never interviewed or spoke directly with Alabama officials.

The preliminary offer from Alabama athletic director Mal Moore included a $5 million a year salary for five years and a signing bonus that ranged from $5 million to $7 million.

Saban signed a five-year contract with the Dolphins in January 2005 that averages $4.5 million per year.

Just heard on the radio that local West Virginia tv station is reporting that WVU is actively negotiating with Rodriguez to try and keep him in Morgantown, and that both sides are heavily involved.

If this blows up in UA's face, there will be a ton of egg on their face...again.

Mal Moore has issued a statement declaring that RR is staying at WVU.

How many coaches with a "proven record" do you know that want to be sloppy seconds to Rich Rodriguez???

But, I tried to tell you guys this would not happen. Once a Mountaineer..always a Mountaineer. (Well, maybe it was the outcry of the entire state to give him more money) :142smilie

I hope you guys get Grobe.

There will be plenty of humble pie eaten over this weekend in Tuscaloosa, served alongside a heapin' helpin' of public humiliation.

Don't feel bad for Alabama fans, they bring all of this on themselves, and they will hate WVU and Rodriguez forever.

They still grind their teeth everytime they hear the name "Franchione"

Bama fans are victims of there own success. They have created a monster that they can't feed.

Why are they having so much trouble finding a coach? ans:

It is an absolute no-win situation for any coach walking in there. Bama used to recruit players just b/c they are bama. Now, kids coming out of hs view the program based on what they have seen. Under achievement, firing coaches, probation. Unless you grow up a bama fan, why would you want to go to bama?
Any new coach understands this. It will take years (and may never happen) for bama to become the elite program it once was. The success monster created by the bear is an unquenchable hunger in the pits of bama fans' stomachs.
It will be virtually impossible for any new coach to satisfy this hunger. This is the reason no one wants to come into a no-win situation where success is impossible based on expectations.

Another mistake made by Mal Moore is saying that they are only looking at coaches with a proven track record. Stupid! They are no coaches left on the D1 level that hit this criteria. He will no have to eat his words and admit he made a mistake.

I don't know who they will go after next. But, apparently, Bama can't throw enough money at a coach for him to want to walk into a nightmare.

So Cal
Seems to me bama is trapped in a time warp, they still think its 1950, and that whoever they bring in will return bama to national champ success within 3-4 years.

News flash: It ain't going to happen. I'm afraid they'll run 2 or 3 more coaches out of town, before they get it. They'll be way ahead of the game if they fina guy who can beat Auburn once every two years.

The prime blue chip recruits are going to lots of places but not many are heading to states that start with 'A.'

And please bama fans, this isn't piling on......its just a shame to see decent coaches run out of town by boosters who are delusional.....and simply unaware of the realities of college football circa 2006.

Isn't piling on, huh?

I'm sure you know all about Bama football and whats going on around here. I bet the info and coverage in so cal is just enormous. I'm sick of hearing people bash Alabama that know nothing about us or our school/football team. The only thing you know is what you hear on ESPN from their so called analysts and I cant tell you the last time I saw anyone of those guys in Tuscaloosa. As far as the notion about us running off coach's. We have had no choice but to get rid of Dubose, Price, and Shula.

Dubose was a hypocrite who lost the respect and control of his team.
Price was an alcoholic train wreck that was going to derail at any minute. I personally got drunk with him in T-town and watched him and his two sons get out of control and say inappropriate things two 19 year old girls.
When you are the coach at Alabama, you don't go out on weeknights to the bars and get wasted with students!! I could go on with many other drunken stories about Price but I don't think it will help prove my point anymore.
As for Shula, he is just downright incompetent when it comes to calling plays and managing a football game. He too had also lost the respect and control of his team. He should have never been hired in the first place. Anyone who watched any of the games that we lost this year could tell that he was in way over his head. He's a nice guy but he has no business being the head coach.
Our problem is not the fans, the players, or the boosters. Our problem is Mal Moore and hopefully as soon as we get a new coach, he will step down and let someone younger and more in tune to college football in the 21st century take over. Wish I had time to go on, because I could but gotta go out to dinner with the girlfriend.
In closing, lay off Alabama! If you don't know what you are talking about then just shut up!! If your only insight or source on the matter is ESPN or what you see on TV, then you don't know sh**!!
Not trying to offend anyone but I'm sick of hearing/reading about people "piling it on" like the know something we don't and then following it up with some lame a** apology. Peace:thefinger
