Looking forward to the NFL season and wagering on some Falcons games now that the new coach is in place.

First pre-season game went well . I dont wager on these games but watch until season starts.

1. Defensive line/pass rush: Coach Dan Quinn started out as a defensive line coach and the pass rush is such a focus in this training camp that: 1) He spends more time with that group than any other; 2) Hall of Famer Bruce Smith, the career sacks leader, has watched practices the last two days and shared his thoughts with coaches. So those are two positives. The lack of an obvious sack man is concerning. The team is depending heavily on rookie Vic Beasley, second-year lineman Ra?Shede Hageman and SIGNIFICANT (I felt the need to use all CAPS) improvement from Tyson Jackson and Paul Soliai.

2. Offensive line: It probably has been the most talked about area in the last few seasons. Health has been a major problem. Left tackle Jake Matthews, more than anybody else, needs to play 16 games. I believe the line overall will be better and the zone blocking scheme will work for this group, even if it won?t rank as one of the stronger lines in the league.

3. Running backs: The decision to cut Steven Jackson was expected. The question is whether the follow-up strategy to go with Freeman, Coleman and Antone Smith will work out. The Falcons think this will work. I?m not sure how much they really believe that or whether they just don?t feel the need to prioritize the position compared to other areas on the team.

4. Secondary: Cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford and strong safety William Moore are fine. The danger zone is at free safety and nickel. Ricardo Allen likely will win the safety job. The Falcons finished last in pass defense a year ago, but that was party the result of injuries and the absence of a pass rush.

5. Linebackers: Newcomers include Brooks Reed, Justin Durant and O?Brien Schofield. The fact there has been so much change should tell you something.

6. Third receiver/tight end: The Falcons lost Tony Gonzalez to retirement last year and No. 3 receiver Harry Douglas to free agency. Having Julio Jones and Roddy White puts them ahead of most teams in receiving corps but a significant third option is needed and I?m not sure Devin Hester qualifies. No. 1 on the tight end depth chart: veteran Jacob Tamme, who has played for Indianapolis and Denver but had only 14 catches last year with the Broncos.

....................................................................................................

Roddy White is not good anymore.

DL is still the big issue

Robert Griffin III, who recently proclaimed that he's the best quarterback in the NFL, must overcome another obstacle to prove it.

The Washington quarterback suffered a concussion Thursday night in a home preseason game against the Detroit Lions, the Washington Post reported. In the second quarter, Griffin dove trying to recover his own fumble and got hit by Lions defensive end Corey Wootton. Griffin also injured his shoulder.

Griffin lay on the ground for several minutes before exiting the game. He completed just two of five passes for eight yards and got sacked three times for a total loss of 17 yards as his protection faltered.

Washington Coach Jay Gruden was criticized for keeping the key player on the field for a fourth offensive series in a meaningless game.

"Leaving Griffin in that game was borderline criminal," For The Win wrote. "He needs the reps, sure, but at what cost?"

"We felt confident in our tackle and our offensive line to try and get something going there with the fourth drive," Gruden told ESPN. "Unfortunately, it didn't happen."

This is some of the punishment Griffin absorbed before the concussion:

Griffin's head injury comes on the heels of an in-depth ESPN The Magazine interview with ex-49ers linebacker Chris Borland, in which he called football "kind of dehumanizing." Borland retired after one stellar season for fear of long-term cognitive problems from concussions. Borland estimated he sustained 30 concussions in his career, telling ESPN, "If there were no possibility of brain damage, I'd still be playing."

Griffin may have also sustained injury to his ego after being mocked on social media for calling himself the best quarterback in the NFL earlier this week. Major injuries and spotty performances have stunted his progress as Washington seeks to rebound from winning just seven games over two seasons.
..............................................................................................

this guy will never make it with his attitude and chicken legs.

Dude is just like Vick and will go down and lay there when he aint really injured. Or if he fumbles and loses the ball , you can bet the best player in the NFL is going to fake injury.

Taped the game . As Griffin was walking along the sidelines to the locker room I slowed it down and watched his teammates faces. Most would not look at him. But there was one shot where a guy I think # 19 rolled his eyes as Griffin walked by. thats not good when you are the starting QB and the team doubts your toughness.

Its almost like Griffin is saying.... look what you did to me by not blocking.

Hey Kirk Cousins came in and did mostly fine so wtf.

The best player in the NFL he says.

He belongs with Matt Ryan and the Falcons another pussychops.

The Falcons refuse to bring in any quality QB behind Ryan as they might hurt his feelings.

WHO?S HOT

?Quarterback Matt Ryan is on fire.

?Leonard Hankerson is looking like a strong replacement for Harry Douglas.

?Rookie defensive end Vic Beasley gave Jets left tackle D?Brickashaw Ferguson the business on bull rush and a nice inside spin move.

?Both fullbacks, Collin Mooney and Patrick DiMarco have made plays in the games.

?Backup running back Michael Ford had score touchdowns in both games.

?Punter Matt Bosher might be ready for a breakthrough Pro-Bowl season.

?Linebacker Allen Bradford continues to make plays and is very active.

WHO?S NOT

?The offensive line can?t open any holes.

?Running back Jerome Smith, who was having a strong camp, can?t put the ball on the ground.

?Falcons coaches have been on cornerback Robert Alford about his holding onto receivers. He needs to clean that up, especially if he?s going to play nickel back in the slot.

?Center Joe Hawley can play to sound of the whistle, but can?t get any penalties.

?Cornerback Dezmen Southward is having a tough time with the conversion to cornerback. He needs to keep plugging away

?Cornerback Jalen Collins needs to step it up, too.

?Could Jon Asamoah be on the trading block? Why did he play 43 snaps in a second exhibition game? The Bucs, Raiders, Steelers, Eagles, Redskins, Saints, Texans, Lions, Cowboys, Browns, Ravens and Giants were on hand to scout the game. Also, Toronto Saskatchewan and Calgary of the Canadian Football League were in the house at MetLife.

That?s just my subjective view but it turns out there?s some empirical evidence to support it. The nerds at PredictionMachine.com wanted to examine what would happen to all 32 NFL teams if they were forced to play all 16 games with their backup quarterback. They crunched the numbers with 50,000 simulations of the regular season and playoffs in their Predictalator computer.

Their verdict: The Falcons would suffer more than any team if forced to play their No. 2 QB all year. According to the Predictalator, the Falcons? chances of making the playoffs would decrease 85.3 percent if they were forced to play Yates instead of Ryan all season. That?s the biggest drop among all 32 teams?and those numbers were crunched before Yates stunk it up again last night.

Thing is, I don?t know if there has ever been a time when the Falcons wouldn?t rank low on that list since Ryan became QB1 in 2008. Here is the list of No. 2 quarterbacks behind Ryan: Chris Redman, Luke McCown, Dominique Davis, and Yates.:0074:0074for 7 yrs they dont have a back up in draft to build on. Look at the Brice guy with the Jets . at least get someone that good.

Redman was a third-round pick for the Ravens in 2000 but was injured and ineffective for much of his career (though he did beat the Bucs after replacing Ryan during a 2009 game). McCown was seasoned but not accomplished when the Falcons signed him to replace Redman in 2012. The Falcons finally gave up on developing Davis and dumped him in favor of Yates.

Barring a move before the season, the Falcons are stuck with either Yates or Sean Renfree as QB2 this season. Renfree, a seventh-round pick in 2013, is the only quarterback they?ve drafted since they took Ryan. I thought Renfree was good at Duke and he?s had some solid preseason games but he?s still never played in a real NFL game.

None of this will matter if Ryan, as usual, stays healthy. He hasn?t missed a game since the 2009 season and his streak of 87 starts in a row is the fifth-longest among active quarterbacks. Ryan has taken a beating the past two seasons and he keeps going.

But if Ryan?s injury luck runs out this season, the Falcons are in deep trouble.

.......................................................................................

:facepalm::facepalm:

I am not a fan of the Falcons although I watch all their games for wagering.

in a way I wouldnt cry too hard if Ryan missed some games

his luck really is running out.

and that offensive line is still porus and unable to open holes

do you think julio jones will stay healthy and play 16 games?

they didnt extend his big contract yet so that has to tell us something.

Dude gets hurt alot. Hamstrings, ankles, what will it be next. And he drops way too many off his brick hands. You would think he could have worked that out from Alabama when he was hands of stone.

I doubt he plays all 16

Roddy White is another one that trys to stay on the sidelines during pre season and practice. I really dont like that guys play.

Practice ... Practice ....... we are talking about practice.

The biggest reason to believe in the Falcons has nothing to do with the Falcons themselves. Atlanta has the easiest projected schedule in the league based on our metrics. We just produced our 11th annual Football Outsiders Almanac, and only once in our previous 10 books did the team listed with the easiest projected schedule not go at least 9-7 (the 2007 San Francisco 49ers).

We note that 9-7 would have been enough to win the NFC South by 1 1/2 games last season. We also note that the Football Outsiders Almanac can be bought here or here.

...............................................................................................

this is not very encouraging for Falcons fans

win the South and lose the first playoff game . That would be par for the gold course
in Atlanta.

I got hope that new Coach Quinn will make a big difference in the team but its hard to count on that.

Jones is currently in the final year of his contract with the Atlanta Falcons and doesn't appear to be an asset the Falcons would be willing to part ways with in a year. The question then becomes, will the team extend him before the season or proceed how the Broncos and Cowboys handled the contracts of their playmaking wide receivers?

Jones' teammate Roddy White has weighed in. And he thinks the team should just hand Jones his new deal as soon as possible. Speaking with ESPN, White went to bat for Jones and said the team should get the deal done this summer.

"If I was the GM, I would get a deal done with Julio now," White told Josina Anderson on Friday. "I want to make sure he's paid. That's my guy."

According to ESPN reporter Vaughn McClure, "there is a general sense around the team that a deal could get done by the start of training camp." However, McClure also noted that contract talks have not yet started in Atlanta.

White stated two primary reasons why the Falcons should pay Jones now. He thinks Jones' price tag is going to be more expensive in a year and he wants Jones to feel "comfortable."

"The more they wait, the more it's going to cost them," White said. "It's important that (Julio) feels comfortable."
...............................................................................................

Hey Roddy stfu

this is none of your business. Damn foot.

when a player feels comfortable is when they dont give out the goods kinda like Roddys career in a nutshell.

make Jone's play for what he can get.

and he could have a career ending injury knowing his luck.

Go Falcons

Do you think Julio could be in the top 3 receivers this season?? For fantasy reasons....If healthy I love him to get DD TDs and continue his yardage he always gets. Last year only 6 TDs. He's got to get in the end zone to join the Dez's and Demaryous's of the world.

Like you stated I love the schedule! And the new coach brings new life. Matty Ice in for a big season I feel.

I want to draft Julio as #1 pick! Is he worthy of that in your opinion over Dez, Demaryous, Beckham etc.

I know you know your Falcons KOD....thoughts??...

Reluctantly I would have to say I would take him.

his upside is way up there if he can stay healthy. 6 TDs but 1593 yds and alot of that after the catch. Dez with Cowboys 1323 yds and 16 TDs.

with the running back situation especially early , Jones would have to be the go to guy alot. Got to think he will score against these poor teams with runs into the end zone.
I am saying Jones gets 15 TDs this year.

" when I put ...................... under paragraphs I am copying from writers so that I can then make comments. "

I say that once at the beginning of the year and then leave it at that.

Thanks. Every player has health risk some more than others. His game needs to go towards being a red zone threat more to join the elite. I'm banking this year it does! I like O line and the new coach bringing new life. Hopefully they'll be playing for something late in the season cuz some star players seem to take off if their team is out of it. Only other concern is don't know how really good the Falcons will be this year

Fantasy is about TDs more than yards in most leagues
