Hog.

Do you have yearly reviews or semi annual reviews?

I just am curious.

I think that may be a more appropriate time to bring it up, rather then right now when I'm sure he is flustered as all hell.

I am sure he realizes what you do if he is as smart as you say.

Best case scenario: you wait until your annual review, he says "jeremey, you have kicked ass this past year, and I'm givin you a huge raise".

You get your cheddar, and never even had to bring it up :toast:

Probably best to consider advice from people who have a job and can spell.

Now is the time to go to the owner and tell him that you know this is a stressful time but, he can count on you to help him get through this temporary period of having fewer staff.

Tell him that and then do it. Make sure he knows how valuable you are to him and the company.

Following, when things settle down, get your thoughts together and ask for what you want (money/more responsibility/etc). When you do that, don't tell him how hard you worked to keep things afloat...he will know that

If you are not satisfied with the response, that is the time to start looking elsewhere. The worse thing you can do is leverage the situation when he is probably already on edge...he may give you more money but, will resent your timing.

Seems like a great opportunity to interview with a company that has better pay and benefits. They will at least be understanding as to why you would be seeking better employment. The owner will not improve his people skills and if he does not recognize you are carrying the lion's share of the work load? Time to look elsewhere. :0008

Coming from a small business owner.

He's obviously in a tough spot. Use your skills to help him through this rough spot. THEN ask him for the raise. If you do it now, regardless of whether or not it's deserved, will create sour grapes.

Instead of bending him over "hey I know you are up shits creek so I will pile on and ask for a raise", its better to come after and say "I know you were in a tough spot and I did A, B, and C to help you get through the tough time and I ask you to consider a raise" will go much further.
