O's blow Doubleheader Sweep..

CHICAGO -- Jose Abreu played a big role for the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday even when the Baltimore Orioles pitched around the red-hot slugger.

Yonder Alonso hit a two-run single with two out in the ninth inning, and the White Sox topped the Orioles 7-6 to salvage a split of their doubleheader.

Pinch hitter Leury Garcia sparked the winning rally with a leadoff walk. Adam Engel then reached on a bunt single when Evan Phillips (0-1) threw late to first.

With two down and runners on second and third, Abreu was walked intentionally to get to Alonso, who lined a game-ending single into left field.

Young Orioles go for 3rd straight win against Red Sox

The Baltimore Orioles have started getting the kind of pitching they need -- from the starters and the bullpen.

They'll see if they can find it again in the second game of their series with the visiting Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.

John Means (4-3) threw seven solid innings for Baltimore in Monday's 4-1 victory over the Red Sox, who had won three of four over the weekend against the White Sox. Means gave up one run and shut down the powerful Red Sox lineup, often using his changeup that has baffled and befuddled most hitters this season.

This comes right after Dylan Bundy threw 7 1/3 shutout innings in his Saturday start against the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays -- a 3-0 Baltimore win. The series finale was washed out on Sunday, so that gives the Orioles their two top starts of the season back-to-back.

Bundy and Means combined to give up just one run in 14 1/3 innings as the Orioles have won two in a row while getting solid work from their bullpen. Closer Mychal Givens has saves in his last four appearances, including each of Baltimore's last two games.

The Orioles are also showing some power. Jonathan Villar hit an early grand slam that gave them all their offense on Monday. During this current franchise rebuild, manager Brandon Hyde said the Orioles simply want to see consistency from their team.

Red Sox past the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 Tuesday night. Record 13-23

BALTIMORE -- J.D. Martinez got back to into a long-ball groove with a milestone homer that set the tone for Boston's potent offense.

Martinez hit his 200th career home run, Xander Bogaerts added a solo shot and Mitch Moreland capped the power surge with a three-run drive that carried the Red Sox past the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 Tuesday night.

UP NEXT

Red Sox: Back in a groove after a poor April, Chris Sale (1-5, 5.25 ERA) brings an 11-inning scoreless streak into Wednesday night's series finale.

Orioles: Andrew Cashner (4-1, 4.71) makes his eighth start of the season, looking to win his fifth straight decision, a streak that includes an April 13 victory at Fenway Park.
