God save the Queen and the NFL

God save the Queen and the NFL

Why do we sing the National Anthem before sporting events?

Does England sign "God save the Queen" before a Liverpool match?

Does Japan sing "insert anthem here" before Sumo?

How did the two become associated with one another?

The anthem isn't played for all events. The anthem isn't played before a Stageshow, never is it before the Emmys, Grammys, etc. , the anthem is left out of all events but sports. Why this connection?

I understand the playing of national anthem at the Olympics. At the end of the event, for the victor. This makes sense, it's an international competition. Why is it neccessary for San Antiono vs. Atlanta?

I'm not going Eddie Haskel over here. I'm not saying stop the anthems. I'm just wondering why.

I was wondering the same. It didn't used to be played before games in Australia when I lived there. It is here in Canada, probably due to our proximity to the US. At the risk of being flamed....it doesn't seem to make much sense to single out sporting events for the anthem, unless international...

Anyone know the history of it?

My guess is that it probably began during one of the world wars...

Lots of good stuff in this thread, being in the Marine Corps from 82-87 here is my take on it.
First of all the anthem is exactly that, if it isn't played before the Emmys or Oscars then it damn well should be and a Bald Eagle released also for that matter. Nothing in my life was/is more fulfilling and made me cry harder than when Wayne Messmer sang the Nationl Anthem in Chicago Stadium prior to the NHL all star game the day we went to Desert Storm. If you don't like it, or the words, tough shit. I also like America the Beautiful and This Land, however this is the adopted anthem and for good reason.
I am sick and tired of people screaming about freedom of this and freedom to do that. A girl turns her back on the American flag at a game, if I was a student or player on that team, home girl would have taken her first nationally televised ass kickin right then and there.
Do you think that no freedoms or anything were won by the Vietnam War? The right to protest and march on Washington and all that crap basically got its roots during that war.
The very freedoms and liberties we as U.S. citizens possess are because we earn the right to have them through conflict and negotiation.
As far as being a baby killer.....sign me up because I wouldn't think twice about it if I thought the mewling little bastard was a threat to my childrens freedom. Let me ask you this, did Korea, Germany, Vietnam, et. al., balk at putting children on their own front lines? You think they didn't hide explosives and whatever else in diapers? Anyone that has never seen true oppression, lived in a tyrannical state, or a communism cannot speak to that side of any equation. Just as noone that has never had to defend their country in the name of freedom has a right to speak to the "truth" either.
Eddie, you want a game without an anthem, then go play duck duck goose with your colleagues, you know the ones that defend our freedoms in courts of law. Your very livelihood was built on the backs of freedom fighters, so even though I don't feel like arguing with you because I generally agree with you on most points on this one.....kiss my ass. Let freedom ring baby, at every event.
Life is hell and war has become part of it. You can quote anyone you want about us being the only animal that will war against itself, but that is also not true. Territorial battles wage in all walks of life my brother. What do you think happens when a new heirarchy comes into power in a pride of lions. The young are uncerimoniously killed by the new big guy.
We probably don't need to bomb Iraq, but with the way society in the U.S. is today and youth crime on an astronomical rise, a little time on the fronts couldn't hurt.

I guess the question as to how and when it got started is a good one. America the beautiful is another nice one. I guess we could add the pledge and maybe a couple of rebel songs for the folks down south. Dont get me wrong im for it. I guess because it always happen for the last 61 years of my life. But I have no idea why it was used and none of the other above. I guess we dont do a bunch of them or the game would start 15 minutes later. And at the end of the game or what ever activity we could play taps.
Anything can be taken to far. So maybe just the anthem will do.
And FDC you are correct Nam got must these protest started. I believe it was because it lasted about 5 years to dam long.

FDC,
Let me start by saying thank you. Thank you for doing your job protecting our nation. We need people like you who are willing to take bullets for our freedom.

It is "our freedom" right FDC? I know you like to rant and rage about subject and most of the time you make good points. This time however, you may have crossed the line. The sentence: Just as noone that has never had to defend their country in the name of freedom has a right to speak to the "truth" either. I?m sorry but I?m having trouble with this decree. Are you trying to say that those of us without military service do not have a voice? Unless we chose to have a government job shooting a gun, we may not speak?

I just wish to clarify this statement. I hope I am wrong.
