First...Congrats to Shaq, Fisher, Grant, Horry, Bryant, Lou, Harper, Shaw and Fox.
Notice, I left out Phil Jackson.
I was listening to game 5 on the radio, and before it was even over, Mussberger was comparing Jackson to Auerbach.
Bulls**t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, he has Jordan and Pippen, then he gets HANDED Shaq and Bryant.
I can't beleive the words that are being said about Phil Jackson!..."genius, mastermind, the greatest"
OK, he's among the coaching elite, but when he takes the likes of Cleveland, Washington, Golden State, LA Clippers, etc.... to the finals, then I'll beleive!!

slow down buddy..yeah people try to make that argument..but sooo many coaches are given superstars and dont do crap with their teams.......Mike Dunleavy=Portland...Pat Riley=Miami Heat....i could go on and on...Jackson is a great coach...he deserves the credit...(i know Jordan actually ran the Bulls, not Jackson, but what the hey)

Jackson turned down the NJ Nets job because they didn't have enough talent for him to win imediately.

I probably mis-represented myself with my comments because I DO think that Jackson is a great coach. Shaq never won before Jackson and Shaq couldn't pass. With Jackson, Shaq has become one of the best passing big men in the game. When the team was falling apart Jackson kept the ship from sinking and don't forget about championship after championship. He defines his players roles and they follow his lead.
I agree with the fact that he has a ton of talent but he's made a good team into a dominant one.

Genius in the fact that he chooses good situations.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, Aurebach had a stud line-up in his time.
Thats my point! My definition of coaching genius is someone who takes a bad team to greatness....
not one who takes a superb team to championships!

Dont like jackson much ...and dont think that he exactly 'quieted down' the controversy on this team ...hes just a lucky son of a bitch , and to his favor it quieted down when kobe got injured for eight games ...

also dont know how you can compar ethe talent on miami (with mourning as rusty as you can get , and barely playing a cuple minutes with his new teammates (eight with jones) before being pushed into the playofss , a past his prime 'clutch player' in hardaway , and others ) or portland (pippen not all he was built up to be when not playing next to superman , and wallace , who has yet to understand what playing for the team means )to SHAQ and KOBE
just my thoughts.....

whatever it is , lakers did it again , and as it goes , jackson is obviously gonna get credit for it .....

You must understand that I hated the Bulls with a passion and am not a fan of the Lakeshow at all; but.....there is not another coach I would rather have to lead a team but Phil Jackson.

Somehow he put this mess of a team (granted with 2 soon to be HOF stars) back on track and almost ran them undefeated through the playoffs. Dealing with 2 egos as big as Kobe and Shaq is not the easiest thing in the world. He did pull it off though and without much of a supporting cast.

People can say all they want about him being handed these players, but he has won with these players. He has won more than anyone in this era........by FAR.

So as much as it pains me ...Phil is the man.

Bluegrass!
Given a team perhaps, but he's still got to deal with all those superstar attitudes. Guy has coached 11 yrs. and won EIGHT NBA championships! Riley couldn't do in Miami and NY; Dunleavy probably had the most all around talented team in the NBA. Jackson probably is the best at managing attitudes and personalities. Give him that if nothing else......

Everyone that plays for Jackson become better under his teachings. Even average players produce for him. Its one thing to have lots O' talent and get knocked out of the playoffs every year and another to bring home the hardware consistently.
This also brings up another question. Is Joe Torre a great manager? He's won 4 or 5 championships with the Yankmees but sucked when hes coached elsewhere.
Theres no end to "greatness" debates. We can all agree on one thing and thats that we disagree.

I have to come in as one of those who does not believe Phil Jackson is a great coach. I do think that he is a better than average shrink though and he is savy enough to surround himself with quality coaches. Phil is a psychologist and that is exactly what you need to be in today's NBA.

Let's face it, how much coaching does it really take to clear a side and play one on one? Up until now, all you really had to worry about defensively was a double team or trap that would take the ball out of your creator or postman's hands. Even most NBA coaches past and present will tell you that not much real fundamental coaching takes place in the NBA. That's done at much earlier ages like high school, college, and playgrounds. Find a quality penetrating guard that can score and create situations off the dribble and you will win. If you are lucky enough to have a quality big man to go with him, you will not only win but win big. Let's see, the two best creators in the NBA arguably Iverson and Bryant. The two best big men arguably Shaq and Mutombo so who plays for the NBA title? Philly and LA. Jordan and Pippen proved that if you have quality creators off the dribble you can win big even without the high profile big fella.

Phil Jackson is not a great bench coach, so what. He hasn't had to be. He's smart enough to pick his spots and wise enough to not over extend his minimal coaching abilities. That my friends is no small accomplishment considering the abundant egos of today's NBA players.

I can easily settle this question by asking one question....."Would Jackson win a championship if he was coaching the sixers and Larry Brown was coaching the lakers?? Lakers would have still won, case closed......Jackson ain't special.

PHIL JACKSON'S A WINNER!!!! AND THOSE THAT BET FOR HIS TEAM (CHICAGO AND L.A.) VS. THE SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE YEARS WON FAR MORE MONEY THAN THEY LOST. MY POINT: HE WINS AND THOSE THAT BELIEVE IN HIS COACHING ABILITY ARE WINNERS AS WELL.

The one thing I like about Jackson is the way he will allow his team to right themselves up when the other team is making a run, instead of calling timeout. I think most of the geniuses are in the college game. Recruiting guys, keeping them in school (as long as possible) trying to impose a measure of discipline, keeping the alums off your back requires more than any Zen Master could contemplate.

I think it is ridiculous not to think Phil Jackson is pure genius. Maybe I'm falling for the scam, but the guy makes team's work together. He coaches the TEAM philosophy better than anyone.

Would he win in college? I don't think at the rate that he does in the NBA. He is not made for the college game.

Is he a good bench coach? No, that's what NBA assistants are for, and he has some great ones.

Would LA have won the two championships without Phil? IMO, hell no! They would have never been able to hold it together. They tried before and could not do it.

The bottom line question to whether someone is a good coach or not...Does he win? A resounding YES. There can be no argument to that.

I would like to see him with the Clippers. I think he would really lead those guys to a great start on their careers.

I also think Phil is the reason why the Lakers are going to stay together. Players enjoy playing for him--which is another key attribute to being a great coach.

Do I like the Lakers? Not really, but I love Shaq. I have enjoyed watching him mature over the years.

Do you want to start another discussion?

Could Shaq be the greatest big man of all time? I think he has the possibility. The guy works hard, and when he gets his free throw shooting down where he can do it consistently, there will not be a flaw in his game.
