Guys who can take bad teams to "greatness" are a dime a dozen. Karl, Brown, Sloan, Adelman, Collins, Westphal all have taken crap teams to the threshold. I could probably name a dozen more. Real talent is winning championships. End of story.

Ask yourself this, if you put Phil Jackson with Golden State, would they get into the playoffs within a few years? Almost certainly. And they would do the same with any of the guys listed above. But if you gave those guys the Lakers, I have my doubts that all, or even most of them would be able to re-produce Jackson's results.

Best coach of a generation, end of story.

Well, we're all entitled to our opinions, but, with this statement... I'd have to say
YOU'RE NUTS!!!

Very interesting analogy...but I think Jackson WOULD have won the championship with the 76ers, and here's why....the Lakers would be unrecognizable without Jackson, all you need to do is look ONE YEAR before he arrived at the complete disorganization and lack of communciation....you guys are forgetting how much talent was being WASTED in the years before Jackson arrived. You put Jackson on the OTHER side of the court with the 76ers, against a team less Jackson's philosophy and implementation of ideas -- and you swing the pendelum....personally, I don't think Shaq or Kobe would have formed such a potent duo without the aid of this man....consequentally, the Lakers never make it to the championship without that duo intact so soundly + you have another NBA pretender at the helm (but, for those arguing against Phil -- I highly doubt there would be another coach they would rather have for their team...even a more fundamental old-school coach would not be able to handle such a commercialized league, where egos flare about -- it takes a different type of coach for a different type of league -- and for this day, no one is better than Phil)

If Jordan planned retirement around the presence or absence of Phil Jackson, at the pinnacle of Jordan's command over not only his team -- but the entire league, that is a testament to this man's role in not only the Bulls' dynasty, but the Lakers' dynasty....

coaching in the n.b.a. is a joke they dont even need a coach.phils job is to get his top players out if the get 3 fouls and always rest them at the end of the first quarter.k.c.jones coached the celtics to 2 championships and the best team ever the 86 celtics bird, mchale, parish,walton,d.j.when asked by a local reporter about coaching he said these guys are pros if there tired they will tell me and i take them out thats all i do.larry bird said the only reason why k.c. is the coach here is because we need him to sing at our christmas parties.those were the good old days here in beantown.

Nope. But very good. Had his share of luck.
The Bulls with M J, Many could have coached with same results. Lakers should go and hide if they don't win at least one or two more in a row.

Beantown, that was then this is now. I liked so many of the players and teams from years gone by. But no one around today will keep lakers from another title.
