For gods sake lets set a precedent for these pirates. I'm sure a Navy SEAL team is on the scene by now. Night swim to the lifeboat. Concussion grenade. Problem solved. Sounds so simple from a few thousand miles away. What am I missing?

ga_ben it makes it much harder thats for sure. But what makes it really hard is the other 50 to 100 folks being held at other sites are chips. THey say they willl start killing many of them if we try anything. None are from USA. However these other countries and ship owners have been paying these rats off for years. And are telling us they want there folks not harmed. Tough spot.

The reason these pirates continue is those that have been captured are returned to Somlia to stand trial--Duh

Considering the the amount of money that it has cost with ransoms paid and cargo insurance premiums tripling--you think the shipping industry would wise up.

If I was them would pay 10 five men teams to accompany 10 ships and when pirates hit boat they were on--there would be only one survivor of the pirates released to tell others back in somolia what happen to the others. Would take about 6 months to reduce attacks 80%.

DTB Problems is shippers to willing to pay. Next Captains don,t want arms on there ships. Still Your idea is a good one. And just maybe now that our navy is getting more involved things will slowley change. Of course part of the problem is area to watch is size of Texas. THat is why the cargo ships need those guards onboard.

On CNN

U.S. ship captain held by pirates off Somalia, has been freed, senior U.S. official says. Three of four pirates killed.

Looks like they took your advice

all this just reminds me of history....

Obama follwing in footsteps of his hero Jefferson. Muslim pirates was big problem back in 1812 then and most everyone just paid ransoms. Jefferson decided hell with this, lets take 'em on!

But US didn't have a navy. No problem, build one!

US resolve convinced Euros to help us, and after couple Wars, centuries of paying these fuks ended.

Political problem (then and now) is that to do it right (as djv said), you gotta attack the pirates on-shore bases.

Bombardment of Algiers by Lord Exmouth in August 1816, Thomas Luny:

Sm_Bombardment_of_Algiers2C_August_.jpg

From Wikipedia:

The Barbary Corsairs, sometimes called Ottoman corsairs or Barbary Pirates, were Muslim pirates and privateers who operated from North Africa from the time of the Crusades (11th century) until the early 19th century.

American ships sailing in the Mediterranean chose to travel close to larger convoys of other European powers who had bribed the pirates. Payments in ransom and tribute to the Barbary states amounted to 20% of United States government annual expenditures in 1800.

After some serious debate, the United States Navy was born in March 1794. Six frigates were authorized, and so began the construction of the United States, the "Constellation", the "Constitution" and three other frigates.

This new military presence helped to stiffen American resolve to resist the continuation of tribute payments, leading to the two Barbary Wars along the North African coast: the First Barbary War from 1801 to 1805 and the Second Barbary War in 1815. It was not until 1815 that naval victories ended tribute payments by the U.S., although some European nations continued annual payments until the 1830s.

The United States Marine Corps actions in these wars led to the line "to the shores of Tripoli" in the opening of the Marine Hymn. Because of the hazards of boarding hostile ships, Marines' uniforms had a leather high collar to protect against cutlass slashes. This led to the nickname Leatherneck for U.S. Marines.

navy sniper with backup wait for their orders in choppy seas.

Order is given.

3 pirates with holes in their heads.

Captain is safe.

Its the way its supposed to be.

Why will they not let these boats have security and when they are attempts to be boarded they shoot these fawkers like the dogs they are.

That ransom shit has been going on for way too long.

Most amazing thing in this operation is snipers pulled off shots in choppy seas--considering substantial movement of both -platform they were firing from-plus movement of target--this feat was almost unbelievable.
