I did here a few folks say "we Christians should all be reminded that three precious human lives were lost in this action you are all celebrating".
Evidently, it turns out that reports saying Obama personally
ordered the rescue are misleading. But he was commander in chief, and he should get the credit--if only due to fact you could image the criticism he'd be getting now if the operation didn't turn out as well!
and more history...
The navy destroyer involved in the pirate action is, believe it or not, named after Commodore Bainbridge--a Commodore in the United States Navy who fought against the pirates of Jefferson's day. He was first sent there to deliver tribute money, but later help convice the powers that be to fight. One of his ships ran ashore and he was prisoner for 3 years. After that he went into private shipping to earn back some of his loss income, then rejoined the US Navy to fight the pirates again.
But before that second Pirate war, he had the battle in War Of 1812 that made him famous. In command of the 44-gun frigate USS
Constitution , he sank the HMS
Java, getting wounded twice in the battle, but staying in complete command. The helm of the USS
Constitution was so damaged, he salvaged the helm off the defeated HMS
Java. Wiki reports: "To this day, the still-commissioned
Constitution (anchored in Boston Harbor) sports the helm that Bainbridge salvaged from the
Java."
