The 8-4 Villanova Wildcats are in Chicago to do battle with the 2-8 DePaul Blue Demons. Game time is 4:00 pm eastern on FS1. Nova is -11.5/134.5.
The Blue Demons are off to their worst start in years and are clearly the worst team in the Big East. They are coming off a 56-46 loss to a good Northwestern club where DePaul’s shooting was way below normal. Villanova beat Creighton in Omaha last Wednesday 58-56 in OT. Despite shooting 22% in the first half and falling behind by 14 early in the second half, the Wildcats used defense and better shooting to persevere behind Dixon’s 32 point game.
DePaul plays slow, doesn’t foul much, is turnover prone, shoots well from 3 but not from inside the arc. They have 3 players who shoot over 40% from deep. They are led by Carter (14 ppg), Oden (13 ppg) and Nelson (10 ppg). Height wise they are about the same as Nova.
For Villanova, Dixon has been a stud down low. The transfers: Hart, Ware, Bamba and Burton have all been solid. Armstrong looks like he’s getting better. Hausen is streaky from 3. Overall, defense has been winning the day for the Cats.
DePaul’s best tactic today is to slow things down and hope to get hot from 3. They need to stay away from fouling, also. For Nova, they need to NOT fall in love with shooting 3’s and go down low where DePaul is defensively weak. Unfortunately, the Cats have historically played down to their competition.
Nova always has a target on their back and DePaul beat them last year so they’ll be up to today’s challenge. Who knows if the Wildcat’ shots will fall today.
