The 19-13 Villanova Wildcats beat Big East doormat Seton Hall 67-55 last night to advance in the Big East Championship to play UCONN (22-9) this evening at 9:30 eastern on FS1. The Huskies are -6.5/135.5.
Despite some questionable coaching and an 8 minute scoring drought, the Villanova win was relatively easy. Eric Dixon didn’t play the whole game which was a bonus going into tonight’s game. The Cats will need to clean up the turnovers they had last night and start making foul shots to be competitive this evening. And, as always, rebound rebound rebound.
They played UCONN twice thus far. Beating them by 2 at Nova and losing by 6 at UCONN after blowing a 14 point lead with 5 minutes to go. If Nova didn’t blow 5 double digit leads with 5 minutes to go this season, they would be comfortably in the Big Dance. HOWEVER…they didn’t. So, it’s win the Big East Tournament…period. For UCONN, they are seeking their third straight NCAA Championship and believe they are getting hot at the right time. They can score for sure. McNeeley, Ball and Karaban all average over 14 ppg. Defensively they are inconsistent. They are really a momentum team so Villanova needs to keep them out of rhythm.
The Cats need Brickus to hit a few deep threes. They also need both Poplar and Brickus to capitalize on their quickness. Dixon needs to be smart inside and draw fouls. The Huskies will shoot more 3’s than usual as Villanova’s 3 point D is very poor. It SHOULD be a close game. We’ll see!
