The 16-10 Butler Bulldogs are on the Villanova campus to take on the Wildcats at 6:30 pm eastern on FS1. Nova is -6.5/141.5.
Neither team can afford to lose this game if they hope to make it to the NCAA Tournament. When they played a few weeks ago at Butler, Nova squandered a late lead and lost by 7 in double OT. Butler’s DJ Davis went off for 28 points Including 15 from deep all in the second half of that game.
Butler’s lost 3 of 4 but most clubs would to UCONN, Marquette and Creighton. Nova has won 3 of 4 vs lesser competition (Providence, Seton Hall, Georgetown). Nonetheless, Nova has not allowed over 56 points in four straight games.
Butler is led by Pierre Brooks (15.3 ppg), Davis (14.1 ppg) and Jahmyl Telfort (13.9 ppg). Last out they were embarrassed by Creighton 79-57. They’ll be determined to improve on that effort. They shoot 46% from the field and 36% from 3 but are 242nd defensively. Against Nova, they primarily used ball screens on offense which the Cats struggled to defend. We’ll likely see that tonight.
The Wildcats will yet again attempt to create offense via defense. Once again, they will strive to hold Butler under 60 to make it 5 straight games holding opponents under 60. Eric Dixon is a mismatch vs Butler and we’ll see him getting quite a few touches. Hausen has blossomed from 3 lately. They’ll run plays to get him shots. Last out in a walkthrough win vs. Georgetown, Justin Moore hit a couple of 3’s. if He comes alive, that would be huge for the Cats.
Nova needs to get out to a quick start and get the crowd into it. We’ll see. But this is a game they should win.
