Just feed it a rotisserie chicken every day... It'll be fine. My gfs dog lived until it was 17 in human years. I can't remember what kind of dog it was but it wasn't bigger than a football. :mj23:

Acanna and Orijen are fantastic foods. Pricey but worth it when what is going into the food is good quality ingredients.

Do yourself a favour and check out those 2, or read up online about some other different foods. I'd personally recommend those 2 having used them though.

Check online for a German Shepard message board, or Facebook for a German Shepard owners group. Ask questions there and see what other owners have to say. You can find a lot of helpful advice on all matters pertaining to your breed and get info from owners with the same concerns/issues.

Don't feed your dogs something from the supermarket that is full of bullshit, like animal by products.

What Airportis said, and.....Check for any recalls on whatever brand you decide. The better brands are always recommended. There are about three levels of dog and cat food. The crap which is like Alpo or Puppy Chow. Mid level which is Iams and Science Diet. And then high levels such as those listed by Airportis. Rotisserie chicken is awesome if you can afford it.

It's hard to trust any food manufacturer. So many varieties were recalled a few years ago as many animals perished from tainted food. Scared me, and I started reading up on it. There were just a handful that weren't recalled. But what was revealed is that most dog and cat food was made at a plant in Canada which they all used a poisonous filler from China. Go figure. The plant was called Menu foods.....Purina, Canidae and Merrick were a few that weren't tainted or recalled at the time.

Good luck. Hope that helps a little.

I can't remember what brand but I know cie has discovered that some of the brands that claim to be healthy for your pet in fact are not. I want to say Blue Buffalo but I could be incorrect.

yeah, Blue Buffalo are fucking twats. Purina bought them I think, and Purina sucks. They were falsely advertising what was in the food.

Wow, I think the German Shepherd breed is awesome. Would definitely agree to look at some of their message boards. Yes, Buffalo Blue was one that sucked. We use, and have used Pure Vita for our Staffordshire Terriors and Pit Bulls through the years, and all have lived 11-13 years respectively. My new Pitty girl is a year old and 85 lbs and loves it, of course along with the sneak treats I give her which is probably wrong, but steak is meant to be shared in moderation. I will say we found out she was allergic to chicken because of red pimply spots she was getting, which sucked for two months, and we were the problem it turned out. Couldn't figure it out until tested. So, my point is to try what you feel best with, make sure it works well, and enjoy your new addition!!

fun breed!

make sure that both you and the woman of the house spend time alone with it in the puppy stages and it sees you both as the alpha.
we had got one as a puppy, and I spent the majority of the time training it, and it saw me as the alpha and my wife as the beta because of that. It was kinda funny, but made it really tough to sit on the couch with my wife. The dog would constantly insert itself between my wife and I - everywhere. Some times, to the point the lil pup would sneer and growl at her when we tried to cuddle up.

There is a good brand of food sold at Walmart actually but the puppy line may be hard to find. My suggestion is to go to a feed store if you have them in your area and tyne most important thing about food, puppy or senior, is ingredients. You'll always be in good shape if tbe first ingredient is a protein like salmon or bison or chicken in that order, beef is fine but last choice. The second ingredient should be is by product, then veggies. Natural balance is the brand from Walmart. It doesn't have to be 5 star as much as it should be about ingredients. Fillers are bad mmmmmkay.

Iams Food is what I have used for 25-30 years. It is more expensive but it is the best .
Would not use Purina . Many dogs have become ill & died from eating one of their brands .
Do some research.
We had German Shepherds as our first dogs. Great choice for a puppy.

Thanks for the suggestions and the link above.

I was going to get the Kirkland brand from Costco, but after some research I don't want to risk my daughter's birthday gift with this brand.

We do have a local feed store. I will pay them a visit in the morning. I will also go to Wal-Mart to see if they have Natural Balance for puppies.

There have been many co paints about this brand. I believe they did a recall. Even so I would never feed it to our dog.

wasn't suggesting any brand..

just the thread as a source of information..
