Rush Limbaugh wasted no time Thursday responding to the news that Stephen Colbert would replace David Letterman on CBS' "The Late Show," and the conservative talk-radio host is not happy about the choice.

In fact, Limbaugh said, he thinks the network has "declared war on the heartland of America" by hiring Colbert, whose Comedy Central show "The Colbert Report" regularly spoofs the conservative movement that Limbaugh has spearheaded.

"You really care what I think about that?" Limbaugh said on Thursday's edition of "The Rush Limbaugh Show," when the topic was broached. "Well, I'll give you the short version: CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America."

Limbaugh went on to suggest that the late-night landscape ? and in fact comedy as a whole ? will now launch a full-scale attack on "traditional American values."

"No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values and now it's just wide out in the open," Limbaugh warned. "What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny, and a redefinition of what is comedy. They're blowing up the 11:30 format under the guise that the world's changing, and people don't want the kind of comedy that Carson gave us, or even Letterman. It's media planting a flag here, and it's a declaration."

Colbert was announced as Letterman's replacement on Thursday, after Letterman revealed last week that he planned to retire sometime in 2015.

Colbert has said that he won't be doing "The Late Show" in character as a clueless conservative pundit, the guise he employs on "The Colbert Report

DEPARTMENT OF PERSONAL HISTORY. Yesterday I was reminded by a lawyer friend that when I was at Yale Law School in the early 1970s I took a class in civil and political rights. In that same class were Hillary Rodham, Bill Clinton, and Clarence Thomas. When the professor asked a question, Hillary was the first to raise her hand and almost always had the correct answer. I raised my hand fairly often but got it wrong half the time. Bill missed most classes. Clarence never said a word.

Thomas sat there because he knew nothing

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican congressman Tom Petri of Wisconsin says he will retire after more than 30 years in Congress.

In a statement on Friday, the congressman says he will make a formal announcement in his district on Monday on his plans not to seek re-election.

Petri is considered one of the more moderate Republicans in the House and was first elected in 1979. He has served on the Education and Workforce Committee and the Transportation Committee.

He has easily won re-election in his Republican-leaning district in east central Wisconsin.

When organized interest groups or economic elites want a particular policy passed, there?s a strongly likelihood their wishes will come true. But when average citizens support something, they have next to no influence.
That?s according to a forthcoming article in Perspectives on Politics by Martin Gilens of Princeton University and Benjamin I. Page of Northwestern University. The two looked at a data set of 1,779 policy issues between 1981 and 2002 and matched them up against surveys of public opinion broken down by income as well as support from interest groups.
They estimate that the impact of what an average citizen prefers put up against what the elites and interest groups want is next to nothing, or ?a non-significant, near-zero level.? They note that their findings show ?ordinary citizens?have little or no independent influence on policy at all.? The affluent, on the other hand, have ?a quite substantial, highly significant, independent impact on policy,? they find, ?more so than any other set of actors? that they studied. Organized interest groups similarly fare well, with ?a large, positive, highly significant impact on public policy.?
When they hold constant the preferences of interest groups and the rich, ?it makes very little difference what the general public thinks,? they note. The probability that policy change occurs is basically the same whether a small group or a large majority of average citizens are in favor. On the other hand, all else being the same, opposition from the wealthy means that a particular policy is only adopted about 18 percent of the time, but when they support it it gets adopted 45 percent of the time. Similar patterns are true for interest groups. The impact could also be even higher than their findings, as there may be policy differences among those they count as wealthy, which means that the imprecision in their measure ?is likely to produce underestimates of the impact of economic elites on policy making,? they write.
One mitigating factor is that they note other research shows that the interests of the average citizen often align with what the wealthy want, although that is not typically true for interest groups.
But plenty of past research has backed up the idea that our government is far more responsive to the needs of the wealthy than those of the poor. Research from the University of Connecticut found that the Senate is only responsive to the policy preferences of the rich, not those of the poor and middle class. And with income inequality continuing to worsen, the problem will only become exacerbated.
One clear example of this problem was the across-the-board, automatic spending cuts of sequestration, which gutted things like Head Start, and Meals on Wheels, while Congress responded quickly to the needs of business-class travelers who faced long airport lines during Federal Aviation Administration furlough.

how long have we known this pathetic bullshit

The ignorant dipshit is YOU, Rock.

The number signed up is 7.5 million, not 6.5 million. It would be considerably higher, but nearly half the states (the Republican ones) have refused the Medicaid expansion, of which the Federal government would pay the full cost. Yep, that's correct - those stupid assholes are keeping many of their citizens from getting free healthcare. That makes them dipshits, just like you.

A "large percentage had their insurance cancelled". Wrong again, dipshit. The number of outright cancellations was about 200K, the same as in any other year. The rest had their insurance replaced with better Obamacare policies at lower cost.

Try turning off the Limbaugh and Fox Nuze lies, and get yourself some facts for a change, Mister Dipshit.
