tore everything out of my front yard...yews,forsythia`s(sp.?),hostas,boxwoods...all high maintenance, drab shrubbery.....

tore out all the landscaping timber to boot...

going small shrubbery,low maintenance....

the question is,i`m either going borderless(digging the "45 degree angle both ways" mulch break)...or i`m digging a trench and using heavy duty paver guides as a sort of border to keep the line neat....

they`re black, flexible and heavy duty....keeping them low to the ground so they aren`t easily detected...shouldn`t be all that obvious even after my black mulch starts to bleach out...

anybody evet do this...the ground`s soft from all the rain...with a flat end shovel and pickaxe it shouldn`t be too bad...

i`m wondering if the paving stone border will make constant edge touch-ups less necessary?...if so,it should help define and keep a nice straight line.......

pavers or blocks can get dirty looking so i`m not going that way...

opinions?

i`m sure he does some block and paver work...so he probably knows whether paver guides ,if dug nice and deep, would help keep that line sharp....

i`m also gonna use some round seabed stones as an accent...

i`m going for what old school`s pictures look like with black mulch...except i`m going for a "V" effect(larger groupings of shrubs on the corners tapering toward the front door....

that was helpful,o.s.....

thanks,guys...

keep the mulch close to the house. Termites love that shit. give them a little something different to munch on.

my wife and I tried cedar mulch and it looks good for a few months, we switched to black mulch and it looks good a year later no fading and we live in the Houston area, so you know how hot it gets down here in the summer.

How do you know this, Spongy? Been mulchin' the basement area lately? :00hour

:mj07: :mj07: :142smilie

good plan on ripping out the boxwoods! I'm so glad we got rid of ours! They smell like cat-piss especially after it rains, and they are ugly. Try to plant so that you will have something blooming March through early November. That's what we have at our house, and it's very nice. Not sure where you live, weasel, since you've never put it in your profile, so maybe that's not possible (blooming March through early November)?

ray...what do you think about using paver edging to cut a cleaner mulch line?....

u ever see those shovels that are shaped like a rectangle and flat? about eight inches by twelve inches. U take one of those with the shovel part facing u and go straight down about 4 inches. then lift it up while pushing it forward. This is how u make a nice neat looking mulch bed. U design it any way u want. Takes a little time but i think it looks much better then that black border stuff. If the dirt is decent it isnt that hard at all. Worst part is shaking the dirt out of the stuff u cut and throwing the grass away. Make sure u have an axe with ya in case u hit a root. Try a little spot and see how it goes. I had that shovel for years and it comes in handy for this moment. The shovel is not that expensive. U do this kind of shit it pays to have the right tools. By the way did u build a wall in front of this project in case someone sees ya?

my wife and I hired some undocumented workers to dig out our flowerbeds, best 1500 dollars I have ever spent, they planted everything and mulched too...
