Fox Addresses Rush Limbaugh's Accusations

More than 200 people rose to their feet to greet Tammy Duckworth and Michael J. Fox. The "Back to the Future" star and Parkinson's sufferer was in Wheaton trying to help Duckworth become the Illinois 6th District's future congressman.

"I'm so excited that we are going to have the kind of leadership that Tammy will provide that will make sure this happens," Fox said.

Fox is referring to federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, which he believes is being thwarted by White House restrictions. To achieve his goal, he has been barnstorming the country and appearing in ads.

One ad airing in Missouri sparked controversy when Limbaugh remarked that it appeared that Fox was either off his medication or acting.

On Tuesday, the talk show host said Fox admitted in his book to not taking his meds when he appeared before Congress.

"He did not take his medication for the purposes of having the ravages and the horrors of Parkinson's disease illustrated," Limbaugh said.

Fox addressed the controversy on Tuesday.

"I'm kind of lucky right now. It's ironic, given some of the things that have been said in the last couple of days, that my pills are working really well right now," he said.

University of Chicago neurologist Dr. Thomas Kelly says Limbaugh doesn't have his facts straight. Fox's disease has progressed where he no longer only gets tremors, which can be controlled with medication, but has more erratic movements which are caused directly by his medicine.

"Chaotic, maybe writhing, dance-like movements, or dyskinesia, the movements I've seen in Mr. Fox, are due to his medications," said Dr. Kelly.

Duckworth called Limbaugh's opinion ridiculous.

"That comment is trying to take attention away from the real issue at hand, which is we need embryonic stem cell research," she said.

Duckworth's congressional opponent says that's not true. He was joined by a cancer survivor from Wheaton, who was treated using adult stem cells.

"His life has been transformed," Peter Roskam said.

In November, the outcome of this race could transform this debate in Congress.

CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli and Rob Johnson contributed to this report.

Rush's full response here. Rush does quote from Fox's book, where Fox plainly states he went before the Senate subcommitte hearing in 1999 deliberately without medication.......I suppose Rush was guessing such a thing was happening again....(all these links from Drudge's page)

Parading suffering for political gain

Yesterday?s campaign appearance by Michael J. Fox in support of Illinois Democratic congressional candidate Tammy Duckworth made for a heart-wrenching sight. Watching two severely handicapped people ? Duckworth lost both her legs in Iraq ? demagogue an issue (stem sell research) for political gain made the spectacle painful still. But this, sad to say, is what the Democratic Party has been reduced to in its desperate bid to win an election.

Utterly devoid of ideas and unwilling to tell us what they truly stand for, they now seek to attract votes by parading human suffering. As if this was not bad enough, they encourage the unfortunates they so cynically exploit to spread lies about their political opponents.

By shamelessly exploiting disability, Democrats have shown that there is nothing they will not stoop to for political gain. This is a party in the throes of utter moral bankruptcy.

The Unconscionable Claims of Michael J. Fox

October 25th, 2006

Mary L. Davenport, MD

The popular and appealing actor Michael J. Fox has taken to the airwaves in Senate battleground states Missouri, Maryland, and New Jersey with a highly misleading ad urging defeat of Republican Senatorial candidates opposing the use of taxpayer dollars to fund new embryonic stem cell line research. He states,

?Stem cell research offers hope to millions of Americans with diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s?. But George Bush and Michael Steele would put limits on the most promising stem cell research.?

Mr. Fox and his ads? sponsors are guilty of conflating embryonic stem cell research, which the GOP candidates and many Americans oppose for destroying a human life in the name of curing other people?s diseases, with stem cell research in general, which includes adult stem cell research and umbilical cord blood stem cell research.

The only limits in question are on federal funding of new embryonic stem cell lines, requiring the sacrifice of new embryos. Private and state-funded research (California voters are spending six billion dollars borrowing money to fund this) is ongoing. The implicit claim that research based on new embryos is ?the most promising? is absurd, completely unsupported by the scientific literature, and an insult to voters, based as it is on the assumption that they are incapable of understanding the issue. Too stupid to tell the difference, is the elitist assumption underlying this campaign.

Flim-flam is a charitable description. Why would federally-funded research be more promising than state- and privately-funded research? And on what possible basis can the claim be made that embryonic stem cell research is more promising than adult stem cell research?

The plain fact is that embryonic stem cell research is proving to be a bust. There are currently 72 therapies showing human benefits using adult stem cells and zero using embryonic stem cells. Scientifically-minded readers can review this medical journal article on the status of adult stem cell research. Adult stem cell therapies are already being advertised and promoted while no such treatments are even remotely in prospect for embryonic stem cell research.

The fact is that adult stem cells have already produced remarkable cures, whereas embryonic stem cells have failed. This should come as no great surprise to anyone with a background in high school biology. When an embryo is created by the union of the sperm and egg, the cells begin to divide, creating embryonic stem cells from which all future tissues and organs are derived. Within days, the embryonic cells differentiate into three cell layers ? ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. Cells in these layers continue to differentiate into tissues and organs. As the embryo matures into a fetus, child, and adult, some undifferentiated cells of the three types remain in various tissues such as bone marrow, fat, skin and olfactory tissue.

These adult stem cells are multipotent: they have the ability to turn into a variety of types of tissues. Successful stem cell therapies cause the DNA in the adult stem cells to further differentiate into more specific types of cells. There is no point in getting the adult stem cell to turn into a less differentiated type of cell, or using the more primitive embryonic stem cells. This would be going backward, in the opposite direction of providing a clinically useful therapy. Difficulties abound with proposed embryonic stem cell therapies. The growth of the more primitive embryonic stem cells is more difficult to control and leads to tumor formation. Recent research suggests brain tumors may result. Additionally, the use of embryonic tissue foreign to the patient can potentially lead to problems with immune rejection of tissue, a problem not encountered in using a patient?s own adult stem cells.

America is the most formidable medical research center in the world, but it is far from alone in pursuing the potential of adult stem cells. The worldwide effort is impressive and growing. For non-adult stem cell research, a morally unquestionable alternative source exists: stem cells drawn from umbilical cord blood. Already a bank exists in Dubai collecting cord blood stem cells.

In short, the claims made in the Michael J. Fox political ads are false and reprehensible, an insult to the voters of Maryland, Missouri and New Jersey, and to all Americans.

first let me say that i haven't cared much for limbaugh...don't like the method's he uses to get his points across....

i saw a clip of the michael fox endorsement...& it was painful to see.....my father in law died of parkinson's & i feel sorry for fox.

i also heard somebody on tv yesterday say all that limbaugh did was read a passage in fox's book that said that michael sometimes does not take his medication to show people the effects of parkinson's....if that's true than imo limbaugh didn't do anything wrong.

"the bunker"
after reading more about this,i think that maybe fox has to take some responsibility
for his actions,also.....there is obviously a certain amount of exploitation involved in using fox in that add....

when you inject yourself into the political debate, you can`t expect tragedy or illness or military service to shield you from criticism....when you become an advocate....you have to expect counterpoint.....that`s the nature of the beast....

using "unassailable"messengers to promote a political point of view(fox, sheehan, tilly`s brother)seems to be a democratic strategy.....and i seem to have fallen into the trap.....

of course, doesn`t change my opinion of limbaugh...or the neanderthal way he approached the subject...

It's the old half wrong half right BS. Or as some once said coffee cub is half full or empty. But never in between. Nothing wrong with Fox bringing out this guy is against stem cell. Can't be any worse then if you saw Bush this morning talk and take question for over a hour and said nothing. At least not new. Just used different words. Now some one with only a 3rd grade education might be fooled. But not the rest of us. At least I hope not.

garden-I'm sure mjf isn't being exploited, nor does he expect 2 be shielded , or unassailable, as you put it. He is for that particular cause, he is highly educated on it, as I have heard him lecture myself. I sincerely doubt he feels the need to be shielded or protected against criticism or counter views or dissenting opinions.

Rush-believe me is the least of mjf problems, although Limbaugh s ignorance is almost unconscionable. What I saw was Limbaugh gyrating around in his chair, imitating Fox s disease. You would think with his track record, he would know better.

TerryRay- you post a article by a doctor Davenport, a ob/gyn Dr., with a obvious pro life agenda.

freeze-its hard to imagine, you as a doctor compare stem cell research to the fountain of youth. It's incredible how you continually speak about the issue, yet in our last discussion, you didn't even know who, where, or when the embryonic stem cell was discovered. You really should get with the program, stem cells are almost beyond a political issue, its approaching a human health issue now. Try reading Christopher Thomas Scott New Book STEM CELLS NOW, AN INTRODUCTION TO THE COMING MEDICAL REVOLUTION. it covers political, ethics of stem cell research to the lay person, which obviously you are.
Eve Herald also has a new book, STEM CELL WARS, STORIES FROM THE FRONT LINES. just came out in September.

you ought to learn how to talk to people properly...you'll be more successful in life. i'm sure you don't talk like this in the real world because you would spend most of your time picking yourself up off the floor.

Ya know Spongie...

Ya know Spongie...

there is kind of civility around here from the regulars
and we are both guilty of sometimes using terminology that really doesnt help the issue we are pressing. Some of the arguments brought up may seem stupid and ignorant to us but calling the person espousing them doesn't serve our argument any better.
So in my opinion there is merit in Mr AR's post...they however have called me nasty things too...some blatantly false.. but that doesn't bother me.

Lets try and just state our cases and leave the questioning of mental faculties to someone else.

other than a few story tellers who have done little practical, we are DECADES from working with stem cells with any sort of competence

Right now, stem cells appeal to two groups of people: some researchers who can use $$ to fund their research and pocketbooks; politicians who can use it as a tool to drive a wedge and split constituencies for votes

John Edwards, scheister lawyer, who famously proclaimed "If you elect John Kerry, Christopher Reeve will walk again" and others have successfully invoked FALSE HOPE and EMOTION into REAL PATIENTS suffering from various serious illnesses which is NEAR CRIMINAL from any ethical standpoint whatsoever

Rather, money should NOT BE DIVERTED from practical development of treatment which actually stand a chance of helping guys like DJV with his disease. Why anyone would attach a specific area of research to a constitution is beyond me and LUDICRIS.

Yes, right now stem cells represent a false sense of hope for the fountain of youth crowd. Unfortunately, one has a better chance of visiting Benny Hinn for a healing than stem cells will produce in the next 100 years. You can take that to the bank no matter how much money we pour into them out of the taxpayer's pockets and treasury.

We need a much better understanding of molecular biology including learning about signal transduction, characterizing cell to cell interactions, etc. etc. before we start messing around with stem cells. Good grief we don't know 1% of what is going on in the cell and we want to just start injecting stem cells?

Hello, Disaster.

Take off your blinders for goodness sakes. To single me out when almost everyone one way or another does this is a joke. Go see if you can get a thicker coat of skin on one of those plastic surgery shows. Or better yet since i have turned the forum in your opinion "just like the others" than do what you probably have done fifty thousand times in your life. Go run to the monitors and complain. I see a guy named beantownJim saying things that make me look like a kitten but i don't see you reprimanding him at all. I feel what i say is the truth and if i have to say it in a way to knock some sense into people because i feel my country has been taken over by a bunch of thieving jackals than im gonna say it. Its called freedom of speech.

Freeze, your unbelievable, waging guesses on what medical developments will and won't transpire over the next 100 years, are you Nostradamus? It's not even a monetary issue, I love how the conservative Evangelical crowd yells about emptying tax payers and the Treasury s wallets, probably the only thing more comical is there Einstein view of morality. The same crowd that 20 years ago was dead against ivf fertilization., claiming it was akin to cloning. It's not a monetary question freeze, over half a million embryonic stem cells are now in suspension frozen, and will be discarded as medical waste inherently. Hundreds and hundreds of sc are thrown out with the medical waste in hundreds of ivf clinics across the country daily. That's why scientists are leaving the country, for fear of being jailed and fined up up to one million dollars for doing research. Many states currently would jail a scientist on the same charges as felony murder, for studying cells that would be discarded as medical waste.

no i am knowledgeable in today's understanding or rather lack of understanding in molecular biology and you aren't

i am also knowledgeable in some of the ethical concerns people have in this field of research which you apparantly dismiss so readily

i am also knowledgeable in how wrong it is to give patients with serious disease false hope which you may or may not be

of course you can talk and scream all you want with all sorts of insinuations but you do not know what you are talking about frankly

here is a good analogy for you: think of yourself as a caveman supporting an effort to build a space shuttle with sticks and stones having no idea what a space shuttle looks like or the slightest clue in how it functions and in the process you may or may not being doing extremely egregious ethical wrongdoings

that is EXACTLY what you are promoting and is nothing short of extremism and madness

Really freeze, how many books, journals articles or medical symposiums have you enlightened yourself regarding sc research with? I encourage you to read some of what the advanced scientist at universities like Stanford & MIT have to say about the medical field you so pupu. Minds I'm sure that don't frequent madjacks gambling forum, but non the least medical minds.

you are a complete joke !!

you have no credibilty on this forum for people to take anything you say seriously...all you do is call people names.

your very first post to me you told me that i was too stupid to have an opinion on a subject that was being discussed.

in one of your other intelligent posts you insulted sixfive by stereotyping people from the south.sixfive has been a well respected poster here for many years & treats people with respect (that's a word you should learn), but yet you saw the need to insult him.

i just saw in the general forum that you called vinnie a jerk. vinnie is another long time well respected poster here & all you did was insult him for no apparent reason.

you see,you fail to relize that the only jerk on this forum is you because your too ignorant to realize that the more you call people names the more stupid you look.

you mentioned that you want to knock some sense into people...

what background or experience do you have that qualifies you to knock sense into anybody.i once asked you your age but you didn't answer me. judging by your posts you probably haven't even reached 20 years old yet....& you want to set people straight.....that's very funny.

this is the 2nd time that you have accused me as a person who goes to jack to complain about another poster.you seem paranoid that somebody will complain about you to a moderator.why is that ? tell us how many forums have you been thrown off of ? juding by your posting style i would guess that you have been thrown off of a few. and i will repeat to you again that i have never gone to jack to ask him to expel somebody from this forum. i would leave first before i do that.

again i will repeat what i said before...you bring absolutely nothing worthwhile to the table & this forum is better off without you. but that's somebody else's decision.

and as for you hammer.....the first dozen posts by you were all anti semetic..

your dislike for jews (which is your right) is apparent & has been spotted by others as well. so if it acts like a duck & quacks like a duck...it's an anti-semite.
