It's nice to see that you've turned into an expert on a country that you first heard about 5 days ago. (Where exactly is West Ossentia, anyway?)
If you may, show me where I'm supporting Russia in my post - I just think that it's insane to think that we have enough oil here to provide any significant benefit, but now you want us to drill to supply Europe with their oil needs, too. Then you go into a post on what you think I believe as if you've already figured out every argument.
I'm not an expert on this, but I've spent time in Tbilisi, spent time with Georgians and have seen US troops on the streets. I used to own shares in an oil company there whose biggest risks was the events of the past 5 days, so I'm a bit up on what's happened over the past 4 years.
In that time, Georgia has captured Russian troops (who later were returned), have had a Military official publicly state that Russia wouldn't have the guts to come down to the Caucasus' to wage war due to all of the problems they have in Chechnya and have forcefully stifled demonstrations in the streets. The President was elected with 96% votes for(Saddam-like numbers). They've openly been trained by US forces and have attempted to join NATO, whose sole goal was to combat the Soviet Union. They became a democracy separated from Russia, but won't let Abkhazia nor South Ossentia have their own democracy or choose their own leadership. They also went into S. Ossentia with force to stop an uprising. And in all this time, with all the Russian warnings, Moscow has stood by and have nothing overt. They bring troops into stop the Georgian forces and they're greeted with news proclamations that Georgia has shot down 4 Russian planes. Soo . . . . they take out Georgia's radar and then their airport.
That said. . . Georgia is the side of democracy (kind of) and the side that is our ally. The Russian response has been over the top. They don't need words from Europe showing their support - they need air coverage and they need a show of defense by whatever international force will step up. We're just a bit strapped right now - which is one of the moonbats concerns from Day one.
i wasn`t gonna bother, but i was called out by my buddies smurph and wocky...
robert...thank you for the reasoned response...:toast:
i hope that we can get through this without another rehash of iraq...
btw....we`re not so strapped that we couldn`t supply air support...our air force is so superior to russia`s rusting, archaic 1970 vintage airforce it isn`t funny....
we`re strapped because of media driven public opinion.....can you imagine the whining if bush actually tried to help georgia?...
i can`t even imagine...
no...`m not an expert,obviously......but i read quite a bit....
south ossentia belongs to georgia...it`s internationally recognized.....ossentia was split in half in and the north is literally in russia and the south is literally in georgia...it belongs to georgia..
just look at a map... north ossetia is in russia...south ossetia is in georgia...forget the map....it`s legally a part of georgia....thats a fact
before georgia gained independence from the soviet union, ossetia was part of georgia.....
the russians had moved thousands of russians to ossetia to colonize the area..."russification" was their long standing policy...
since georgian independence, russia has supported separatists in osssetia and many other areas in the now independent caucasus region....
russia gave citizenship and passports to people in south ossetia as a way of trying to claim the territory and use it to overwhelm georgia....
...just because some in south ossentia sympathize with russia and russia foments trouble doesn`t mean they`re a part of russia...they`re not...
it is russia which is interfering in the internal affairs of georgia, not georgia attacking a poor, helpless nation ...
if mexicans in texas started carrying on and claimed they still belonged to mexico...and mexico decided to send in forces,...wtf?...,i doubt that flies....i`m sure you`d agree...
the facts are what they are...
i know russia`s pisssed because the old soviet union fell apart and they want their power back...does that mean that they can just take whatever piece of a sovereign democracy that they choose?...
maybe they can...by brute force...
but, should georgia just throw their hands up and just allow russia to take s. ossetia?... basically cutting the country in half?...
whatever...i doubt we`ll agree on that, but, legally and geographically,i believe have the high ground here...
oil?....we don`t have enough oil to support ourselves and europe(i don`t recall saying that)......but by all accounts,we have enough of our own resources to become independent of much of opec....
we get the majority of our oil from canada, mexico,,nigeria and we get a portion from opec(the persian gulf and venezuela.....about 22% comes from the persian gulf and 12 % from our enemy venezuela)....
so,with the oil shale, anwar, the dakota`s and the reserves off our coastlines,we could put a serious dent in our dependence on opec while we try and find alternatives...
it ain`t costing us....the oil companies pay the freight...and we`re taxing the hell out of whatever they find...not to mention the leases...
let em go at it...we`ll be far more ecologically responsible than russia, china and cuba...
we both know that it`s beyond stupid(you can smack me for the rhetorical assumption)to send billions of dollars to our enemies...those who hate us and more than likely use our money to support terrorism.....
it just makes sense..
but, christ,we have to start sometime...forget that 10 years bullshit...clinton pulled that boner in 95`...and look where we are now...
do you not save for retirement because the money won`t do you any good for 20 years?....
c`mon...
the natural gas pipeline that runs from aserbijian(spell?) through georgia and supplies europe is crucial because it`s the only pipline of it`s kind in the region that doesn`t flow through russia...
and europe is dependent on it...
when you factor in russian oil and gas reserves, a pipeline through georgia, the oil dependency of potential critics of putin(european nato countries), and the cash garnered by oil exports, then we understand once again that power-power belongs to who has the keys to the energy resources.....and that`s why russia`s become emboldened...
and btw.... to what end would this little democracy want to take on a beast like russia?...why would georgia pick a fight with russia knowing they weren`t yet a nato member and more than likely couldn`t depend on military help from the west?...maybe because by giving up s. ossetia, geographically, that almost puts them under russia`s thumb....
why would they purposefully instigate russia?.....it`s silly...if you don`t feel like googling the military breakdown,i`ll find it for you...
russia`s military superiority is overwhelming...
russia was looking for an excuse to flex some muscle and regain some old territory...and if they get that pipeline...or even destroy it,all the better...
this was planned...they couldn`t possibly amass this much force in this short a period of time...
they also knocked out georgia`s internet presence via cyberattacks....
http://www.computerworld.com/action...ArticleBasic&articleId=9112201&intsrc=hm_list
and now they`re demanding that georgia`s elected president be removed?...lol
when i said we have to draw the line at georgia,i was just using common sense...if russia moves on and takes ukraine or azherbaijan(i hate that f-cking name), without a peep from us,what message does that send to n/s korea and china/taiwan?....hell,iran/israel...
not you bobby....but,what really bugs me how many on the left blindly hate bush and by proxy, their country more than their true enemies...it`s like they`re the spawn of soviet apparatchiks......
it really is pathetic and delusional..and it`s dangerous...
you`ve been over there...you know the russians aren`rt stupid...they learned via the western reaction to iraq that the their best apologists will be american politicians, pundits, professors, and "bloggers"...and it looks like they weren`t disappointed....
they can depend on the left to run interference...they see that bush and this administration has been hamstrung...
they know that the common denominator with this crew is the belief that that whatever we do, and whomever we help, it`s wrong.......
i`m tired..i know we don`t agree..but,thats cool....i hope i addressed some of your questions...maybe not to your satisfaction...but,it was a good discussion...
that`s why i love ya` buddy....you`re fair....
looking forward to football..
