Between Green Bay and Iowa City
2010 * Twenty Ten * Ryder Cup * Tiger Woods has never gone anywhere, and yet for the second year in a row he?s a serious contender for comeback player of the year * St. Andrews and Pebble Beach * New Equipment *

The discipline of golf capping has been totally off my radar since some time in October, but a couple of weeks of television broadcasts and computer monitors and golfobserver.com and golfchannel.com and I?ll be there, wherever there is.

In my first substantial post of any golf season, one big objective is to have one of my strongest plays of the season, or at least something that sure looks value. This season, I took care of that back in October:

Stan, I'll quote and bump this in my first serious golf post in January (odds are at least +3000 that I forget to do so :yup ):

139th Open Championship:

Rory McIlroy(33/1) e.w.
- - Until 2009 I've always had ante-post plays for the Masters before the end of the West Coast Swing, and more often than not weeks or months in advance for the other majors. But in 2009 I definitely had no ante-post wagers for the first two majors, and may or may not have had one for one of the last two majors (i can't recall who). But I've got one I need to be on now, Tiger Woods notwithstanding.

Outrights (Dunhill Links Championship):

Rory McIlroy(12/1) e.w.

McIlroy finds St. Andrews easy, which if true is IMfatalisticO probably better left unsaid.

I would still make an antepost wager on McIlroy at 20/1.

Since before the President?s Cup had concluded, my #1 prediction, without any hesitation, for the 2010 season, has been that Phil Mickelson will win as many majors as any other individual. I?m still standing by that one.

On to this week . . .

Outrights:

Nick Watney(16/1) e.w.
- - If I was up to speed or had the time to cap this event, I?m sure my selections would include big hitting and good putting Aussie?s that have been fairly active back home or elsewhere during the ?silly season(s)?, and have prior success on Beremuda greens, based on my familiarity with past Kapalua results. Last year, eventual champion Ogilvy was my headline play for this event at something like 14/1 or 16/1. As it is, I?ll venture out into the Twenty Ten season with just this one play based on what I very much remember seeing and hearing from Watney at Kapalua in 2008, then what I saw and heard from Watney early in 2009, and then saw and heard from Watney late in 2009, liking the play even more given a forecast of fairly gentle trade winds.

This is the year that we will all be great.
I'm on board with that plan. :mj06:

I noticed that my top-ranked plays (i.e. first listed play) were hitting a far higher win percentage than any of my other plays last year. So, there's one logical change to make to my handicapping this year ... I'll just be listing my 'best bets' at slightly higher stakes :grins:

Round 1 play (2pts):

Nick Watney to beat Dustin Johnson -110 @ Pinnacle [available generally]
More of a bet on Watney than against Johnson as both these big-hitting players should prosper this week given the forecast for calm winds. This is a wide-open course with five par-5s, so it may not be too much of a surprise that when Watney (who ranked 2nd in par-5 performance last year) made his debut here in 2007, he held the lead after the first round, still finishing in the top-5 at the end of the week. Johnson made his course debut last year, but was never in contention and finished just outside the top-10. Maybe one reason for the difference here was putting on the huge Bermuda greens. Both players were equally matched on Tour in 3-Putt Avoidance over the whole season, but Watney is the one with a far better record on Bermuda greens: in Florida, for example, Watney has five top-5 finishes in 21 Tour events; Johnson has five missed cuts in 7 Tour events, with a best finish of 35th. These week is all about driving and putting and Watney looks set for another good week on the Plantation course.

Ames and casey tied on 18, Casey 16 ft for birdie, Ames a 15 ft. Of course Casey makes Ames misses, to give me a loss on the 1st play of the year. Good news Kelly up 2 with 4 to play.

Don't like much this week going with these:

To win
O'Hair 12-1
Watney 20-1

Tourney Matchup
Glover -115 ov Cink

1st rd
Kelly -115 ov Gay
Ames -120 ov Casey (L)

Nice hit on the kelly play.

When chatting with my buddy on g chat, these were my leans..
how about kelly over matteson?
or kelly over gay

I ended up passing on Kelly and saving him for next week.

Round 2 Matchups

Jerry Kelly -125 over Troy Matteson
1.25 pts

-see no reason to back matteson, he shot even par and had 5 bogies, the 5 birdies were on the easier holes

Ames -125 over Casey 1.25 pts
Interview with paul after round 1 he said he is missing it both ways right now and can't reach parallel on his back swing. Said he was lucky to get in at -3.

Ogilvy 120 over Stricker 1.2 pts

Stricker looked average today. He clearly struggled with his new wedges, last year any shot from under 100 yards was in a 6 foot radius, now he is missing greens from that range. It was his putting and wedge game that did him well last year, so if the wedges arent right the scores will off too

Yang over Sabbatini +105
Yang hit it good yesterday and putted awful. I think he missed 6 under 10 foot. Hoping to hit the same and putt better.

Why are they teeing off so much later today? Yesterday they tee off at about 8 am local time, today 1st tee time is 11 am local time.

Round 2 play (4pts):

Stewart Cink to beat Dustin Johnson +100 @ Bet365
Johnson may have shot the lower round yesterday by one shot, but it was Cink who arguably played the best golf in the whole field. He ranked in the top-5 in driving distance and accuracy and 1st in greens in regulation, missing just one of 18 greens. I'll back at this price to hole a few more putts to today and shoot a lower score.

This is the usual tee-off time for this event; yesterday must have been at the request of the TV bosses because it was the first day of the season.

You can't expect these guys to get up at 6am every morning to prepare for a tournament ... didn't they all say that they're on a vacation with their friends and family :grins:

You're right in years past I recall watching it live at night

Guessing the golf channel didn't want to compete with the BCS, so they had them tee off early?

Either way on to rd 2 plays:

Kuchar -115 ov Moore
O'Hair -105 ov Olgivy
and the dog matchup of the day
Wilson -115 ov Slocum
