Ute Football by Lya Wodraska

Should Utah be favored more?

Just finished writing a column for tomorrow's paper about the MWC and how it seems to be the center of college football right now, gaining respect and attention and so forth. Then I noticed the Utes were only a 13 1/2-point favorite at San Jose State.

Is it me or does that number seem a little low? The Utes after all have won their last eight road games. Granted, it's the first road game for a lot of key players as Utes, starting with quarterback Terrance Cain, but I still am surprised the Utes aren't favored by more. What do you think?

Care to throw any predictions out there? There was a time, say, two years ago, when the Utes seemed to have trouble with these so-called "trap" games and there were upsets or closer than should have been games, but as coach Kyle Whittingham said this week, trap games don't exist unless you allow them to exist. The Utes haven't allowed any since getting shut out at UNLV in 2007. That loss, while extremely embarrassing at the time, seems to have played a big role in Utah's focus against their lesser opponents.

Speaking of Cain, he'll be turned loose a bit more this week as Utah continues to install more of the offense and defense. Cain said his opener was all right, but that he is never satisfied.

One thing he said he'd like to do this Saturday is throw down field more and taking his time instead of forcing the quick pass as much as he did against the Aggies.

Spartans hope to recover in time to give Utes a game

Happy Labor Day!

While you are probably laboring over chores or errands, sounds like San Jose State coach Dick Tomey is laboring over some film watching as he figures out what went wrong on Saturday against USC.

The Spartans lost 56-3 in the opener and were outgained 620 yards to 121.

Tomey said during today's WAC teleconference call he was happy with the first 24 minutes of the game, then everything fell apart after his team fumbled.

The Spartans were 1-of-16 on third down conversions.

"It was our worst nightmare from then on," he said. "We couldn't move the ball and they just wore us down."

Tomey, who called USC's offensive line the best he has seen, said his team obviously needs to do better against the Utes.

"They are a very good football team and we have to improve by leaps and bounds," he said. "We're going to have a great week of practice. We were embarrassed by the way that [USC] game finished, but encouraged by the way it started."

Tomey said a decision will be made later in the week whether to start Kyle Reed (9-of-17 for 66 yards) or Jordan La Secla (5-of-10 for 43 yards) at quarterback against the Utes.

"There isn't much difference between the two," he said. "We want some separation by the time we get into conference play."

As for the possibility of starting the season 0-2, Tomey acknowledged beating the Utes would be a difficult feat.

"This team has the longest winning streak in the nation and Kyle has done a tremendous job of following Urban Meyer," he said. "I have a lot of respect for him and we know it's going to be a challenging evening, hopefully we can give them a better game than Saturday."

Utah allowed Utah St to score 17 pts last week. That's a team they would have shutout last year or at least held them to FGs.

SJST looked decent at times against USC, but of course could only score once.

This game should be closer than most think. I see about a 7 to 9 pt margin because I'm not sold on Cain yet.
