Matt Kuchar(33/1) e.w.
Brian Gay(40/1) e.w.
- - Will note a couple ANGLES when I get the chance.
I'm an Ogilvyaholic, and last year I loved Ogilvy out of the box at Kapalua, and what I saw at Kapalua had me loving Zach Johnson the next week at the much more accomodating venue of Waialae, and I was off and running with a great start on the 2009 season . . . This year I hadn't picked up the same vibe from Ogilvy, but I also hadn't been paying much attention. But like last year, I did pick up on a player that would headline my picks for the following week.
In an interview during the Kapalua telecasts,
Matt Kuchar discussed how he was feeling good about his game when he got together with his instructor Chris O'Connell in December, and in short order his coach agreed they didn't have much to work on, so they would work on his scoring. On cue, Kuchar ranked #1 in all around stats at Kapalua according to tour-tips. While I'm not suggesting Waialae is a better fit for Kuchar than was Kapalua (which was clearly the case last year for Zach Johnson), I am climbing on board with Kuchar under similar circumstances, and was prepared to do so even if he had shot 73 rather than 67 on Sunday, but he shot the 67 instead. :SIB
At some time between
Brian Gay's win at Mayakoba in 2008 and his 10 shot win at Harbour Town in 2009, I read an article about how it looked like Gay had found something and he suddenly had the look of a winner, and the consensus from a few posted comments after the article noted they thought they had noticed much the same thing, as had I. I made somewhat of an effort last night to research and find that prior article, but without success. If I had found the article, I would likely have quoted a few passages, and then said there are plenty of reasons to like Gay in a second consecutive Hawaii event on the move to a breezy Seth Raynor track with small Bermuda greens.
One more thing . . . Wife of the Tiger . . .
