Between Green Bay and Iowa City
Ian-

I cannot deny that my writing style is usually stilted and sometimes cryptic. I really do try to say what I mean.

As to your question - "he" is Mr. Byrd. The angle on my play was my expectation (without really knowing) that he worked hard and smart in recent weeks to be ready for his sophomore season, and because of that he may be as sharp as any of the players when it comes to sustaining and building on a fine Mercedes performance. I would contrast that with a Matt Kuchar interview in which Kuchar stated he had been away from the game in recent weeks, and if Kuchar had gone low in the Mercedes, I would have been wondering if it was a bit of a fluke. Instead, I'll be watching to see if Kuchar starts rounding into some better form.

I know, too much. Oh well, I just try to always remember my favorite tag line, "Don't believe everything you think."

Mr Byrd is a baffler to me. No doubt his form at tail end of 2002 and Mercedes in 2003 was great---but I keep thinking he was only one in Mercedes and one of few who finished in top 125 who missed more cuts than they made in 2002. Maybe he just needed confidence. I don't know. He certainly is a fine young chap with lots of potential.

Mid-point update:

Allenby/Franco WON by 4
Lonard/Byrd Leads by 7
Mattiace/Cejka LOST by 1
Roberts/Donald WON by 9
Rollins/Perez Leads by 3

Goosen 1st
Riley 8th
Allenby 31st

Frustrating loss with Mattiace who missed the cut by a single shot having opened his round with a triple-bogey! At least the other matchups are looking good so might yet finish them in profit. Could yet be a very good event despite the loss on the triple-play if Goosen holds on.

Could have been good week if not for final round collapse of Sluman-Furyk and Huston, all of whom I expected to do well in 4th rd.Four losses with largest deficeit of 2 strokes. Was fortunate with so many wagers w/ties lose only lost one to a push.Need to curb those wagers in future, but a bit anxious at start of season.

Final update:

Matchups: 3-2-0; -0.73 units

Lonard/Byrd WON by 6
Rollins/Perez LOST by 3

Outrights: 1-2; +1.88 units

Goosen 20th
Riley 7th
Allenby 4th

Profitable event, but Goosen didn't hold on. A triple-bogey on his first hole of the third round and he was nine shots behind Baddeley halfway through that round. He never recovered. Riley always looked like securing a top-10 finish without threatening the top-5 and so it was left to a great weekend by Allenby to provide the only positive note on an otherwise frustrating weekend across all the Tours.

PGA Tour ytd
Matchups: 6-4; +0.08 units
Outrights: 2-4; +4.13 units

All Tours ytd
Matchups: 18-9; +5.46 units
Outrights: 3-12; +3.76 units
