I have two rooms that have carpet(one is kids playroom) and I'm wanting to clean them. I called a company to come out but then started thinking maybe I can just do it on my own. I know I want to steam clean but are there places you can rent steam cleaners and not just a machine that puts a lot of water into your carpet? Also, what's the best product to put down on any small stains before I steam clean it?

Hopefully one of you guys is an expert and can help, if not I'll pay someone to do it for me. :toast:

Simple Green is a good all purpose stain remover. If you have a stain not coming out, just look on the internet for products to remove it, usually something you can concoct yourself. (Used to know a good formula that consisted of h2o, ammonia, and dawn dishwashing soap. You could probably find it.)

I would spray the stain and let the machine do the removal after soaking. Unless the detergent has changed in formula, the DIY type used to leave a sticky redidue that caused the carpet to get dirty quicker after cleaning. You can fix that with your method of cleaning.

During the process be sure to rinse thoroghly with wand on h2o only, then take plenty of extra time to vacuum the excess moisture over and over.

My experience with renting a machine is awful. They completely suck compared to the machines the pros have. I'm actually waiting for a cleaning right now.

Old School, question for you. Is the one from Home Depot a true steam cleaner? I ask because I know when you use one with shampoo that is leaves a residue and it will get dirtier a little more quickly than if there is no shampoo. Of course, I could be totally wrong with that and probably am because I have no clue what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the help guys. To me it's not about saving money, I just enjoy doing things on my own rather than having someone else doing it and then trying to upsell me on stuff.

the process is the same..but keep in mind their in truck generator does create a better suckage retraction and less residue is left behind.

I take my time trying to leave behind as little residue as possible..and..double check the mixture ..

again you are correct..but like you I enjoy still being able to do things myself..and at a 50% savings and nearly a perfect job it's good by me.

the day will come when I have to ask somebody to help me to the bathroom..

I will stop doing the things I can for myself when that day arrives.

Valet parking..now there is some stupid stuff.

:0003 ..time for my tea and Pecan Swirl

I used to clean carpet for a living. Just follow Old and my advice(especially the rinse and vac part) and you'll do a great job. After it dries is when you'll see the best results of your efforts.

no thanks.....do you really want to rent a steam cleaner that has maybe 100`s of other customer`s dirt, pet shit and piss and god knows what else imbedded in it?...

you`re gonna blow 40 or 50 bucks...put up another 50 or so and buy yourself your own little steam cleaner....they work great.....and you can clean any time you feel like it...any time it needs it...

look at the $89 red quik steam power brush......should work fine for a few rooms....and does hard surfaces to boot...

I bought one for $250 after renting them periodically throughout my life (my house, the rentals). Great investment IMO.

Here is the number one trick to doing a good job: Squirt some carpet spot cleaner on the bad spots/areas. Use a scrub brush on the area before running the machine over it. It makes a HUGE difference. Takes a little extra time, but it is well worth it.
