firm believer in having my own tools when $$$ outlay makes sense.

in the case of carpet cleaners I feel like Bissell makes a good product and will give you years of use..

especially nice when you are doing some entertaining at home and you want the home to have that extra special touch.

whip at the cleaner and couple hours later the livingroom/rec room is lookin' good and you are ready to entertain that evening..

Got a Bissell myself. You will get your money out of it....especially if you have a pet or kids.

Sister cleans houses and has a steam cleaner. She uses a product called Oxy Deep. I have done my carpets with her cleaner and they look nice when i am finished. Not as hard as it looks especially when u can borrow someone's steamer. Oxy steam by Woolite :0074

I have to agree with Hedgy and you know how I hate that. The rented machines absolutely suck.

I rented a machine and the damn thing would not suck up the water and I borrowed my inlaws machine and it broke and we had to buy them a new one, so then I said fuck it, lets hire it done, every year in the spring they clean my house all rooms and its great, no hassle, and the professional machines remove all the stains, especially with little kids, just my .02

Not many guys like to get their hands dirty on this site. I guess it is the up bringing. I couldn't imagine letting someone cut my grass when i could do it myself. My girl even offered to pay for the season and i said no. I guess guys are just to busy. I don't like to clean carpets or cut grass but i like to save a few dollars here and there. sometimes the satisfaction of doing it urself is satisfying enuf.

u prolly forgot to borrow the book with the steamer Hedgy. I have to agree tho. I hate lending out anything to people who might not know what they are doing. I lent out my circular saw and sure enuf the thing could cut circles when i got it back. Nothing else but circles

I like doing everything I can myself. I love mowing my yard on Saturday morning. For me it's about doing it myself and also the fact that if someone else was doing it for me all I would be doing it sitting on the coach. It's not the 25 a week it would cost, it's the 15k+ over the next 30 years. If I do this with everything in my life then retirement is going to be very good to me. It's not a matter of how much I make anymore, it's a matter of how much I spend.

Saying that, another 6 years and my son will be doing it for a few years. :0002

I was like that until 5 years ago when I wrapped the weed eater around the stop sign in my front yard when the line would not feed out, its not worth the hassle, I have my yard mowed when I get home every Thursday and I dont have to mess with it on the weekend, the money means nothing to me, I waste 25 bucks betting on sporting events all the time, or more :SIB I prefer to let the professionals do the work, I get my house cleaned too, best thing I ever did. Hire someone to clean your carpet, IMO...

I don't consider 25 bucks to mean nothing to me. I use to feel that way when I was in my late 20's making a ton of money and having fun. Then I lost everything at 31 and realized how much the money I worked for meant to me. If I was so busy I didn't have time to mow my yard then I would have someone do it but the fact is on Saturday morning I do have time. So instead of getting fat watching tv I choose to save money, sweat and do it on my own. Anyway, I feel great getting tired and sweaty and then going to jump in the pool and lounge for the rest of the day.

In all reality I highly doubt that there is anyone on this forum that 25 bucks mean "nothing" to. It might not mean anything to them but it should. It's not the 25 a week to have your yard mowed. It's the 25 a week for that, 75 a week to have your house cleaned and everything else that doesn't look like a lot. Sit down and figure up the numbers and it will mean something when you look at the bigger picture. I did it at 33 and it changed my outlook on money. Those little things add up to 100 of thousands in the end and that definitely should mean something to you. My goal is to retire at 45 and I'm on track to do it but I wouldn't be able to by thinking 25 doesn't mean anything to me.

did not mean it like that, I value money. I have two small kids, time with them is important  I completely understand your point.
