I can't believe that your bookie would do that to you, jeez!! After all you did for him?? 😆
Interesting, I was wondering the same, thanks for the explanation.
it was very inconsiderate. i'm not even 100% sure that's what happened, but i know he'd battled cancer on and off a couple times, and when i called him at the start of football season, he wasn't answering.

Smitty funny story . Marist does have a football team and is just as popular on campus as the basketball and baseball team . I just knew Maggarity the basketball coach and he took one of my players to work for him in his summer basketball camp I also coached the girls in a huge basketball tournament and Marist was one of the sites they used. The woman's team is always the most popular team on campus . Living about 25 minutes south of Poughkeepsie I always followed the Red Foxes. Section 9 high school championship basketball used Marist as our home court. I beat Bridgehamptin the defending state champions at Marist to make the final 4 in Glen Falls . That kid that worked summer camp at Marist hit 7 three pointers . He knew their gym well playing with all the councilors every night. A few years later I won the Girls tournament in Poughkeepsie . Pretty ironic same floor ,same bench same locker room Both were upsets When I won the HS regional game my daughter came out on the court and hugged me. The headlines in the next day newspaper showed me picking her up. Then about 4 or 5 years later I upset the girls favorite and she is my starting guard . when we won I picked her up almost the same spot and someone took a picture . She framed the two pictures and today she teaches in Philly and has those 2 pictures hanging in her room .. great memories Marist is a good school and their business school is known all over the east ..

Life has its sad parts for sure. What position did you play?

oh, that was the dumbest thing. i only played one year in HS, and i was a WR (and part-time CB when we were DESPERATE). then i get to college and they told me i was a TE. i literally laughed. thought for sure they were kidding. i was about 180 lbs. now, with the offenses these days, with TE's frequently split out, it would have been awesome. but in those days? how the fuck was i supposed to down-block on a 300-lb defensive tackle? so, yeah, i didn't see the field much. the upside... i probably set the national record for yards per catch by a TE over a career. i averaged 17 yards/catch. the downside... don't ask how many receptions i had.

oh, and that was when i gained tremendous respect for the TE position. not only do you need to know the passing tree, you also have to know all the blocking schemes. so part of practice was with the WRs and part was with the o-line. very unique position in that regard.

Yeah no doubt, wow that's giving up serious weight when blocking.

we had very little in terms of scouting (the head coach was literally the only full-time coach on staff. the DC was a local cop.). some game film and the opponent's roster was about it. i remember every week looking at the D tackles on the roster and thinking to myself maybe it was better that i didn't play much. even the DEs would outweigh me by 40-50 lbs.

ok, here's a fun story. last home game, senior year. i was on kickoff coverage. opening kick... i'm FIRED UP. last home game... i'm gonna HIT SOMEBODY. might be the most fired up i ever was on a football field. i'm barreling downfield... ball carrier in my sight.... i never saw it coming. someone absolutely laid me out. after the game, my friends in the stands couldn't stop talking about the hit i took.

probably good that it was the last game, so i never had to watch that on film.

Damn, that's crazy! Certainly better for your body now , all those hits and weight in the joints add up. Cool hearing some of your sports background!
