They were hopeful Wednesday. Still, Masters Tournament participants had that deja vu feeling in the back of their minds.
Rainy conditions today are expected to wash out the first round of the 69th Masters. If so, it will mark the ninth PGA Tour event (of 15) this year that has been delayed by inclement weather.
"Hopefully, we'll get to play," Larry Mize said. "I don't know how bad it will be."
The Weather Channel predicts an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms. Rainfall, which could reach 1 inch, is expected to last throughout the day. That could lead to suspension of the first round.
"It is spring, and I guess Mother Nature is going to play havoc at this time of year," Stephen Ames said.
"It's supposed to come down (today), not rain," Sergio Garcia said. "I hope somehow we get through it. Hopefully we don't get too much rain."
Too much rain will not shorten the 72-hole tournament, Masters competition and rules committee Chairman Will Nicholson said.
"The policy is to play 72 holes no matter how long it takes," he said. "The winner will finish after 72 holes. Well, I guess you could say 72 holes and beyond if there's a playoff."
Most players were happy with the warm, dry weather so far this week. The course was set to show its teeth, Charles Howell said, but will probably now play softer.
"The greens are as quick as I've seen them, especially for a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday," he said. "I hope we don't get any rain. I hope this golf course plays firm and fast."
