The thing that really bothers me with "donating" is you donate an amount to them and then they send you a blanket, or a bear, or a sweatshirt. How much money would they save if they didn't send you a gift for donating- in my eyes you are only sending your money in to purchase these things. Someone has to pay to make the bears, print the sweatshirts, etc.
My nephew was in the NICU for 6 weeks when he was born and my sister in law had to stay at Ronald McDonald house so every year instead of exchanging names to swap gifts that no one wants we take up a collection as a family and send a large donation to them so they can purchase items that they need for the people who stay there.

I'd be interested to know how you find an executive to run a charity managing millions of dollars and thousands of employees for less than a few hundred thousand dollars per year. Who would take the job?
Executive compensation doesn't much bother me, but other bloat within charities are pretty fucked up. I think giving locally is always better than feeding some charity behemoth. Help those around you.

Metropolitan Ministries here in Tampa Bay supposedly does the right thing. I gift them. No matter your income, if you competently give what you are able, you will feel a certain happiness. No shit.
