Usually I come to Madjacks to read up on some wagers, laugh at the internet fights, or to talk shit myself, usually when drinkng, but tonight I felt the urge to share something with people I dont even know, because Ive seen what the members at Madjacks can do.

My 7 year old nephew was diagnosed with Brain stem gliomas of the Pon this past Thursday and has already survived a biopsy, which was done yesterday. The biopsy revealed that it is a level 4 tumor, the highest level, and my nephews time with us could be very limited. The reason I post tonight, is his parents have to make a decision tomorrow of how to treat the tumor, whether to go really hard with kemo and radiation or try an experimental treatment with arsenic. While, I am at peace with his almost certain passing, I want his last days to be peaceful and happy, while always holding on to the chance of a miracle.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please encourage your family to make decisions with your nephew's quality of life in consideration. What is the value of a few more hours, days, weeks, etc. if it is spent in suffering? It is very difficult to make these decisions when it involves someone we love so, be supportive with whatever they decide.

Hedman...

I am so sorry to hear about your nephew. I know exactly what you feel. I lost my dad to brain cancer about a year and a half ago. Nothing makes this time easy at all. What I will offer up is exactly what VaNurse said. Quality of life in the remaining days is of the utmost importance. I look back on my last few days with my Dad, and he was peaceful. Had it been anything but that, I can't imagine how I'd feel today. This is a hard enough time to deal with for you and your family I am sure. The last thing you want is to look back on it a year or two later and wish you'd made a better choice. Good luck and god bless to your family

Hedman,

I would recommend giving Johns Hopkins University Medical Center a call and explain your situation. They are the LEADER in Cancer Patients DEALING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN AND HAVE BEEN Ranked the #1 Hospital in AMERICA 15 years in a ROW! via U.S NEWS MAGAZINE

There is a Brain Surgeon name "DR. BEN CARSON" there who was FEATURED in that magazine. It was the July 24th 1995 issue of U.S NEWS MAGAZINE. The title of the story was "The Medical Miricle of 7 Year old Mathew Anderson" And the story reads similiar to your sitution. There is also a writeup on the Surgeon! That is however a 1995 issue and I am not sure if Dr. Carson is still there. CNN ALSO did a Story on him in 2001!
He wrote a book "Gifted Hands" an auto biography. He deals with Pediatric Brain Tumor Patients that OTHER doctors deem hopeless. I am not sure if Dr. Carson is at Johns Hopkins still (I believe he still is there however) If he is not i'm sure whoever took his place is just as compitant! I have been hospitlized, Operated on and even Regular Doctors visits to Johns Hopkins and I am confident if you choose, the care you will receive will be TOP OF THE LINE!!

There are also MANY organizations that help out Fincially. Airlines also have programs where "Frequent Flyers" Donate their Miles to the airlines to use in cases of ill patients needing to travel BACK AND FOURTH!
Also There are Fundraising organizations that help out in fundraising to help out with costs!

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is also a GREAT organization which GRANTS wishes to Ill Patients. Sometimes lifted spirits can do wonders!

I wish you well and please don't accept your Nephew passing on just yet! There are MANY things you can do and technology today has come so far. You just have to take the little time to research! I wish you and your family well as a Chronically Ill Patient myself. I know the Hardships that are ahead, thats what families are for to stick through the rough times and the good times TOGETHER and you will ALL be alright!

Thanks for all the kind words and prayers. My sister has decided to do 5 high intense treatments of radiation to shrink the tumor and let him get back most of his motor skills for his remaining days. They have decided against kemo or arsenic, as the side effects would have been severe and his quality of life would have significantly decreased without that much additional time.

He has been at the Denver Childrens hospitol and his biposy and brain surgery were viewed by John Hopkins, St. Jude's, Mayo, and multiple Children's hopsitols. He is 1 in 30 million. He will be discharged today from the hospitol and be at Uncle Hedmans until he returns to his home on Friday evening than back to Denver and Uncle Hedmans for Monday and Tuesday.

Thanks again for all the kind words, prayers, and thoughts. I will let you know if there is anything you can do. Of course as Bronco fans, I have contacted Billy Thompson who is now the community development leader here in the metro area, however with the Draft this weekend everyone is bunkered in. If anyone has any contacts with the Broncos, Avs, Rockies or Nuggets, that would be very helpful. Uncle Hedman got him to his first Bronco and Av game this last year so he is a big fan.

Thanks again. This is a great stress relieve to share with complete stangers as you do not have to watch or listen to the pain in their voice.

My neighbor is a nurse at the Shriners Hospital in Oak Park, Il. I don't know if they can help this situation out. I know she takes care of children from around the world that are in need of free medical care.

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
Wow! Very sorry to hear about this Hedman.
I went to the Av's site to see if I still had some players that I knew thru other Hockey friends, but they have all moved on. I wish you and the family good prayers with what happens from here.
