I know quite a bit about cars and how to work on them but the one thing I have no clue about is tires. I need to get knew ones and started wondering what made for a good ride or quite ride. I have 20" rims and right now my current tires are 255 50r20. I know I have to get a tire for the 20 but what difference does the 255 and 50 make and does it have anything to do with how smooth and quite the ride is?

Basically that is the width indication of the thread area and the height of the tire etc. a wider tire decrease gas mileage and causes a rougher ride. If you are looking for a solid smooth ride then ditch the twenties and go with a Michelin. JMO

Oh I beg to differ my fly-casting, moronic friend. Steady Eddie is, as is par for the course, in a wonderful mood on this bright sunny day in the Queen City. Your attempt (emphasis on the word "attempt") at humor will not deter me from my path to oneness and joyfullness as I journey through this 25th day of May, 2012.

I hope a bird shits on your balding head in the hot Texas sunshire.

Eddie

We don't have birds other then buzzards and big haired southern belles.
I'm not balding? Queen City? I did not know that. That's clears up a lot. I am actually going boom boom right now so I am concentrating on my bowels which makes me less funny. Very hard to keep two pieces of shit happy at the same time one always wants to be the "Big Toe" of the two.

What do you mean ditch the 20s and go with a Michelin? The 20s are my rims, you want me to get rid of them? They're factory rims and I don't think anything smaller would look good.

I am sure they look great and all that. The larger the rim the smaller the tire. In other words you have less cushion due to the decreased volume of compressed air in the tire. For instance, I can't tow my boat with those wide thinner tires as the ply is too thin.
Yes, I bought previously owned vehicle and made him take off the twenties and put the regular tires back on which I replaced immediately. Now I will keep the 20's for resale. They do look better though. If it is the best ride you are looking for though, they won't provide it. Are they factory or an upgrade to factory? Just curious because I would be a bit unhappy if I paid for upgraded rims and didn't get the stock originals with them. Unless it is just the upgrade fee you are paying I guess.
Anyway, I wouldn't buy new rims though unless you were doing a lot of traveling and towing.

Hope that helps,
FDC

FDC, they are factory rims. I know there are ones that come with 19s but it wasn't a choice on mine.

Good deal bro. I would still go with the Michelins as I have run several different truck tires and they are unmatched for durability and ride. Great on the highway and quiet. Pricey, but you get what you pay for

Thanks man! I like the tire rack site, I got to read about different tire reviews and is was based on people with the same vehicle as mine. Now off to Discount to haggle with them a little.
