2009.11.30, final 2 picks:

Washington Capitals @ Carolina Hurricanes: Under 6 -105 (1.95) Bookmaker

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Rangers: Over 5.5 -120 (1.83) Bookmaker

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Rangers

It couldn't be easier to explain the value on this one. Two days ago, the Rangers went to Pittsburgh. What happened? Blow out loss for the Ranger with a 8-3 result. Could it be a better training for the Penguins? Probably not, they scored a lot, they made a great game and are ready to face the Rangers on the road, knowing how they can score.

The Rangers are facing problems. It seems like last year, a team with value and expectations throwing all away. Talent isn't enough to win games and there is no group of supporters that understand this so well as the Rangers fans

In their last game, they won 7-4 against Columbus, another great exhibition for Gaborik, but they can't live for ever this way. Their win had few important things to mention, Columbus had an awful night and Gaborik can still make the difference. However, we can't expect that the Rangers will still be able to improve at home. They had a great moment when the season started, but since then the only way they know is the way down. This team needs to improve their mental condition, just round up all the players and go to the psychotherapist.

Pittsburgh after a bad moment when they faced injury problems, hitting key players and almost half of the team, are again on the right road. Their ability his enormous, with Crosby and Malkin leading their offensive line. After they improved their performance after the return of the recovered players, it's now time to improve their road games, which has been weak in recent games and shouldn't be, as they aspire to win Stanley Cup, and as true contenders they should have the ability to win games in any place.

Scoring his not a problem for the Penguins. Their defense seems to have improved since they had all their defense players available again. It's now time to prove it, against a team that only know how to beat the minnows, with problems concerning their attitude. The last game for these teams was a match up between both teams, but in Pittsburgh instead of New York. 8-3 was the result for the home team and it was a great training session for the Penguins, that had those 60 minutes to improve their skills to beat the Rangers. Even with Lundqvist on the nets it's hard to see the victory escaping the Penguins.

Colorado Avalanche @ Tampa Bay Lightning

For this match up, we can easily say that a team with a letdown spot after a great start of the season, will face another team that makes their home games, their winning games, creating difficulties for those who want to leave their arena with the points.

Colorado is struggling and facing a letdown spot. In their last 10 games, they are 2-8 and none of their wins was easy to achieve. It's a big contrast with their record at the beginning of the season, 11-5. Perhaps the key for those games was Andersen, their goaltender. But his best performances were not so regular as before and looking for his last game, with a 0.944% on saves, it appears to be unlikely for him to maintain his form.

In his last games, after a game where he saved 0.9% or more, he usually struggles with his worst performances. On the offense, the Avalanche are scoring 2.60 goals per game on the road, however they are having peaks in their last games which creates cheating deviations on the stats. They are having several games with only 2 goals scored, 3 at most.

Tampa Bay is a home based team. Their season depends on it as they are much stronger at home than on road. At home they can beat anyone, on the road they struggle to win, even against the worst team. The Lightning had 2 straight losses at home and their loss against Toronto in their last but one home game, was the first home loss in regular time. After that, they gave a blow out win to Rangers and showed that they can be recommended as a team to follow when playing at home, because their home advantage his huge, and scoring only 3 goals at home can be considered a bad day.

Due to their great offensive players with a innate talent to score, this team has great ease to score at home. At home, this punch of great and talented offensive players can transcend everyone expectations and unfortunately this only happens at home, proving the theory of "home-based team". In their last 3 home games, 2 losses to the Lightning's record can only add wins in the next games.

Colorado shouldn't be a team to fear and they won't be hard on Tampa Bay, whose offense will create enough plays to score easily. Take Tampa Bay on regular time.

NHL 2009.12.01, 4 picks:

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens: Under 6 -110 (1.91) Bookmaker

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Chicago Blackhawks: Chicago Blackhawks PL -1.5 +125 (2.25) Bookmaker

Ottawa Senators @ San Jose Sharks: San Jose Sharks PL -1.5 +160 (2.60) Bookmaker & Over 5.5 -105 (1.95) Bookmaker

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Chicago Blackhawks

For this match up, Chicago is a big favourite. This should be an easy win due to the fact that Columbus went down in their performances and Chicago pulled up their game.

Columbus after a great start of the season with a 5-1 record, are now 1-5 in L6. The team had a win in their last game, but it seems that isn't enough to get their confidence higher. After 2 home games, they will play this solo road game against one of the hottest teams in this moment. Being a back-to-back game, Columbus isn't fresh as they should be to fight for this game. Yesterday they fought hard to get their win against St. Louis and it wasn't an easy game despite the 5-2 end result.

Without time to rest they shouldn't be able to play their best game and they'll probably just try to leave Chicago without a blow out loss. In their last games, their weakest point has been their defense, allowing 3.80 goals per game.

Chicago started on their last home games a win streak. 8-0 was the result, when they were about to return home. But after 4 wins on the road, they went down in the last 2. Now, they're with 2 straight losses and it hasn't happened this season (yet) a 3 straight losses for this team. They play a great hockey, showing strong ability to score and have great talented players on their roster.

Their confidence despite the 2 losses is good because they know that they can do anything, play great and win over any team. Their defense has been quite good in their last games, allowing 1.60 goals per game. Their offense as done their part as well, scoring 3.23 goals per game at home.

So, the B2B effect will probably be felt by the Columbus players, they're in a letdown spot, and it will not be a win against a normal team to pull them up. Today, they will play against one of the most cohesive teams, who are playing a great game. It's hard to think that Chicago will let this win pass, as they also need it.

Ottawa Senators @ San Jose Sharks

The odds for this match up give us a great advantage for taking the Sharks. San Jose has all the edges on this game, in offense, defense, PK, PP and so on.

Therefore, this is not a sure game because in NHL anything can happen, however the odds aren't so low as I expect them to be.

Ottawa is a nice team that has a few talent players. Their main problem is that they are old and aren't reliable for many straight games. Right now, they're 5-2 with the 2 losses on road. So it seems that they're in a good moment and that's true, however that good moment won't last much longer.

In the start of the season that was visible. After a 5-2 winning record, they went to a losing 2-4 record. And so far, the 5-2 has been their best streak. At the beginning of the season, i believed that the achievement of that record was easy and now, the 5-2 streak is hard to get and even harder to improve.

San Jose, at least for me, is one of the biggest contenders to the Stanley Cup. Their game is solid and cohesive, they're great in both sides of the field, allowing 2.20 goals per game and scoring 3.30 goals per game. They had a loss on their last home game, but after that, they had 2 road games, and both of them were a winning game. Hence, it's not a question of when will they win their games, but when will they be with the right mode. Because stopping this team is something hard to do if San Jose wants to.

I expect some facilities for the Sharks, they are a good and solid team that needs to win this game. The Senators can't play at the same pace of the Sharks and at some point, Ottawa will not be able to maintain the scoreboard even.

NHL 2009.12.02, final 3 picks:

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Boston Bruins: Boston Bruins PL -1.5 +165 (2.65) Bookmaker

Vancouver Canucks @ New Jersey Devils: New Jersey Devils 3Way (1X2) +145 (2.45) Bookmaker

Nashville Predators @ Minnesota Wild: Nashville Predators ML +105 (2.05) The Greek

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Boston Bruins

For this game, we can expect the public to be with us. After all, Boston Bruins is one of the biggest public teams on NHL. But that's not the only reason to see a Boston Bruins' odds drop.

Tampa Bay is a home-based team. It's hard for this team to win games on the road, with a 4-5 record. This record will be much more negative as we move on in the league. They usually start with poor performances on the road and I can't see them to improve it on this mini road trip. They are passing by bad moment in this season, as they are struggling in their game, making only a few great games.

Even when their stars do their job, usually the defenders don't go along with them. Their defenders have been very poor so far, allowing more than 3 goals per game on the road.

Boston is again on the right road. After they struggled in a period of this season, they are back as we expected. Their defense as been quite solid, the only solid part of their game this season so far. They are just allowing 1.60 goals per game at home, and they don't fear any offensive team. Their offense has improved a lot in their last games, after Savard returned to the team. He has done the difference after his return and has now made an agreement for a 7 year extend contract. His confidence should be great now and will probably show it today, that he deserves the new contract.

So, we have one of the strongest teams returning to their best performances. They are very strong on defense, specially at home, and they'll probably knock out the strongest part of the Tampa Bay game. If the Boston defenders stop Tampa Bay offensive players, it will be a blow out loss to Tampa for sure, as they aren't able to stop anyone. Savard will probably exploit that fact and I expect the Bruins to get one of their biggest wins so far.

Nashville Predators @ Minnesota Wild

This match up offer us a great odds value! As we can see, Nashville is the dog here. But it's home advantage so strong?

Nashville is a hot team right now. After the 3-7 that opened this season, they are 12-4. Between this streak, they achieved 7 straight wins!

So, they are in the right mood. But in their last game, they lost at home with a blowout loss, 0-5. Can they manage this? Line makers don't believe so. But I believe that they can skip that loss and keep the good work they are developing.

Be aware that after they struggled in the start of the season, they had wins as dogs after games where they were out shooted. It happened twice and in both times, they achieved a victory as dogs in the next games. And both games were on the road!

Minnesota has been disappointing so far. With a negative record of 10-12, this team is still chasing a 3 straight wins streak. This team seems to be lost, struggling on every game. Few of their wins were good, has they appear to achieve more wins due to opponents' demerit. It's true that this team is another home-based team in this league, but only one of those wins were against hot teams.

For this game, Minnesota might have Havlat returning, but he still has to improve in order to be the player that we all expect. Even with his return, the team has several players out, and there is a rumour that A flu has stroked another player besides Mietinnen. Mietinnen is expected to play today, however he needs more time to return to his good form.

For this game, I can see Wild as favourites. They are a home base team, but they are struggling so hard for they third straight win, that they will be probably too nervous. The fact that they have several players questionable for today, removes some strength and depth to their roster. Nashville on the other hand, can handle a loss in this game if that happens, it will not interrupt their good moment, and knowing that Minnesota will probably be nervous and will commit some errors, the Predators can take advantage of it and win this game.

NHL 2009.12.03, final 5 picks:

Vancouver Canucks @ Philadelphia Flyers: Over 5.5 -110 (1.91) Bookmaker

Montreal Canadiens @ Buffalo Sabres: Montreal Canadiens ML +180 (2.80) Bookmaker

New York Islanders @ Atlanta Thrashers: Atlanta Thrashers 3Way (1X2) +100 (2.00) Bookmaker

Vancouver Canucks @ Philadelphia Flyers

This match up will be used by the Flyers to try to rehab their game. Is a fact that Philadelphia have facilities to score, and today they will face a team that plays likes them, always forward. So we can expect a great match up between these two teams.

Vancouver still have the reliability or consistency problem. This team can play a great game, scoring lots of goals, and lose the next game to a poor team. However at this moment, they seem to go through a good moment, scoring 3.60 goals per game. They are in back-to-back game, but have played yesterday in New Jersey and won that contest by easy numbers, 5-2.

Hence, their confidence should be also great for this game too and is not the fact of this being a B2B game that will frighten them. This is their 6th B2B game in this season.

Philadelphia is passing their worst period on this season. The 1-5 record in L6 makes it clear. However this team has a huge sacrifice spirit and a lot of heart and even with some injuries, they have abilities to win any game. This team is one of the best scoring teams and has the particularity of having no one on the top scorers list, as in this team every men in any position takes the shot when it's possible. This team at home is also scoring a 3.60 goals per game average.

So, in this contest we can expect lots of goals. The Flyers will try to win this game with everything they've got, but the Canucks are in a great "momentum" and will try to equalize the scoreboard as many times as they have to. So, this appears to be an easy over, take this one.

Montreal Canadiens @ Buffalo Sabres

This can be a long shot, but it's impossible to let it pass, the odds are higher than it should be. Montreal, for the second time this season, pays ahead of 3.00. Last week in Pittsburgh, they were with 3.30 odds.

Today, they are around 3.00 also. This team, with a 2.80 went to Washington and won that game. So, it's not so impossible to them.

And after all, U.S. sports unpredictability are well known because everything can happen. But both these teams have one thing in common. Buffalo went to Toronto last game to win 3-0. Montreal hosted Toronto in their last game, losing 3-0. But this is nothing on NHL.

Buffalo is doing a remarkable season so far. But they are also starting to show signs that they are not a reliable team. The defeat they had at home against Florida was a sign. They started there a 4 losses streak. But the truth is, so far this team as been impressive, playing a good game in most of the matches, achieving a 15-7 record. They will start here a series of home games and they have all confidence to start it well.

Montreal is a struggling team. So far, their efforts to turn things around failed, but they can't quit. They have so many supporters, which makes them one of the most important teams on NHL. And if isn't enough to keep trying a positive record, they also have a talented roster. The results have been intermittent so far, and they are now with 3 straight losses, making this streak their second worst of the season. And sometimes they show that they keep trying to get better results, like when they went to Boston and won that game, or when they went to Washington and won it too, for example.

Hence, for this game we have to take this long shoot. It's true that the Sabres are much better so far, and they also play at home. But we can't underestimate the Canadiens roster. They've the talent to do here a nice surprise and with Price on the nets, it's a conscious and calculated risk. Carey Price, the Canadiens goaltender, is the man that can defend impossible shoots if he wants to. Sometimes he makes a incredible performance, and let's hope that today is one of those days, so he can make a difference on our side.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ New Jersey Devils

The fact that New Jersey is 9-1 against the Lightning straight up proves how easy is for the Devils to play against this Tampa Bay team.

Incredible is how much money they gave to those that risked on them against the puck line, as they are also 9-1 against the spread! For a team that wins so many games against another team just by one goal, it's something odd.

But right now, the Devils are 3-1 at home in the last 4 games, with those 3 wins covering the spread. I believe that it's time to turn off the profit that bettors are getting when they risk in Devils' handicaps.

As I'm always saying, Tampa Bay is a home team. They are 2-4 in L6 road games, with one win in OT. In those losses, two defeats were by 2 and 3 goals. Their negative record on the road is something that will likely get worst as we move on to the end of the season. 2.21 goals per game is what they score on the road so far, as this team can't find the button to make their best players getting good performances in their away games. And the truth is, they depend a lot on Lecavalier and St Louis, who are fundamental pieces of this team, and they only have 5 goals each this season. Stamkos and Malone are trying to carry the team, but are struggling at the moment.

New Jersey after recovering Elias is playing a great game. Their record is great, with 17-7 and standing up for a contenders call. They lost their last game by 2-5 at home against the Canucks, but the result doesn't reflect what happened on that game. This team is successfully avoiding two straight losses at home since their first two games, and will probably avoid today another straight loss. In their last 5 games, they are scoring 3 goals per game, and with Brodeur on the nets, who is allowing a 2.18 goals per game average, the team has a solid game, with good defense and offense.

Hence for this game, I can't see Tampa Bay surviving it. For Lightning this game will be like hell and they will probably spare themselves for tomorrow game at home. The Devils will make an effort to avoid another straight loss at home, and even without that effort they should easily win this match up.

Anaheim Ducks @ Minnesota Wild

Today, we will have a match up between a good home team and a bad road team.

Anaheim is returning to the road games after 7 games at home. This team has failed every opportunities to get a good streak. The Ducks are far to be reliable to risk and have started this road trip with a loss, allowing Dallas to have a comeback.

On the road Anaheim is conceding 3.22 goals per game and scoring only 2.44 goals per game. This shows how poor is their game away from home and with almost 2 months since the last road win, there is no way to improve when they play a B2B game on road.

Minnesota had a slow start of the season with a 3-9 record. Even with that record, they are almost positive and that's because they are not struggling so much at home as it seems. They are a home team and basically depend on those games to achieve some wins. It seems hard to believe, but they are 8-3 at home and are passing one of the best moments of the season, with 3 straight wins. One of their secrets is that Backstrom, their goaltender, is making great performances at home and we can't expect from him no less than that today, as he's one of the best goaltenders on the league.

It's hard to see Minnesota end this game without a win. Anaheim is going through a rough patch and probably the team doesn't even remember their last road win. Their confidence for this match up should be down and the fact of being a B2B game, doesn't give them time to digest the last loss, after they lead the game for about 40 minutes. Minnesota can't leave this moment escape, and they should give their best on this game today, as they are stronger at home.

Atlanta Thrashers @ Toronto Maple Leafs

This match up has these odds due to some opinions that seem wrong to me. The edge is on Atlanta side and these odds makes them the underdog.

Atlanta is a middle table team, however they're in the race for the playoffs for sure. Is their goal and I believe that they'll accomplish it. This team counts with Kovalchuk, who's one of the best players on NHL and he alone can make the difference. Even so, this team can handle things with Kovaluchuk off the ice. But the interesting point is that the Trashers are a road team. At home, their record is 6-6, they're not quite strong at home and it seems that they will not get the most of their points at home.

It is on the road where they can take advantage of their offense power. Their record so far is 9-2 on the road and I believe that record will increase today. With 3.33 goals scored on the road, this team shows their full potential, making them the worst team you can host in the NHL.

Toronto was a few days ago the worst team on NHL. But as i said before, this team has a well handle structure in every level, which gives them the stability required to get some results. And it did work. This team is 5-3 L8 and I'll take my chances to say that putting Gustavsson on the starting role made the difference. This is the only goaltender on this team with a positive record of 6-5, winning 6 of the 8 wins of the team.

Underestimating his importance can be hard, and with him out of the game for a week or more, can be tough for the team. In their first game, the team handle it well, with a win against Columbus. However that win hardly established if Toronto had any merit at all. In their last road game, they lost 7-2 with Boston, a team that has struggled a lot on offense lately.

So, I can't expect this team to return home and win this game, as they aren't quite confident and I believe that they also know that Gustavsson is an important key player for their wins. Atlanta is strong on the road and against a team with a bad record, that is trying to get out of the hole they have dug, I can't see how the visitors will give them a hand, but only to kick them out to the bottom again.

Pick: Atlanta Thrashers 3Way (1X2) +130 (2.30) Bookmaker, +145 (2.45) Goalwin

Philadelphia Flyers @ Montreal Canadiens

We have to try to take advantage of mental issues. This is gonna be a match up which will meltdown the ice as we can't expect no less than a win for both teams. I will not use any trends or stats to sustain this play. Only recent issues and last games that these teams played.

Starting with Montreal, this team are labeling their playoffs as questionable. The team was late to start their engines, and when they start up, the engine just can't work for long time and shutdown suddenly.

However, they are a important team in NHL, traditionally contenders at least to the playoffs and have this year an interesting roster even with the poor production.

So, this team isn't achieving better results only because of them, as they can and should be more comfortable about their results. It's important to know that this team can improve and a good result can make the difference to turn things around. And that result could be the last one, where they won against Boston (5-1), a nice result at home before hosting Flyers.

Philadelphia is going through a tough moment. They fired their coach and gave to the new one the worst welcome possible, a 8-2 loss at home! A 1-6 run gave John Stevens the pink slip, but this team before that run was playing a great game, which for me, makes this decision a little bit wrong or at least too soon. This team had extreme particularities that makes it hard to the new coach to adjust this team to a new kind of game. And that was easily seen when they lost at home against the Capitals (2-8).

They'll struggle only one game? Probably not, they'll need more time to understand the new vision of the game that they have to approach. And that will make this team lose time for the playoffs race, but that's not my decision. Despite this, another piece of bad news was disclosed to the public. Pronger, their best transfer for this year, and probably their best player so far this season, is having problems with Mike Richards, the supporters' hero and team's goalscorer. This can damage a lot this team, even when Richards came to public declaring that it was false news.

So, we have lots of problems on this team for now. Despite how much I enjoy the Flyers game, this play is hard to skip. Montreal can take all the advantage here.

NHL 2009.12.10, 2 picks:

Ottawa Senators @ Philadelphia Flyers

Both teams have the some number of victories. A positive record so far for these teams, however, most of the wins were at home for both. Even with a little advantage because of home spot, this teams are passing bad moments on this season right now.

Ottawa are 1-5 in L6. Their worst losing streak. Perhaps an eventual consequence due to an old roster? The truth is that this team have lost their last home at home against a rival. They suffered one stupid goal that set their lost, and it was a result of a poor confidence, and that mistake will only make them dig more. At road they are a poor team, allowing almost the double than they can score.

Philadelphia were passing through a really bad moment, and as a result, the coach was fired. The new coach have a different kind of game, and the team struggled a lot in the first two game, to understand what the new coach wanted. However, in their last game (at home), the team finally managed the game as the coach planned. The players are trying to pass the bad phase giving all they can, and trying to prove that the news about problems between players were false.

I can't expect no less than a win to Flyers today, They have to show that they can keep the pace they showed last game. First to make the fun return to the arena, and second to prove to the new coach that he can count on them. Hosting a team with a poor road record and passing their worst moment of the season, can be the perfect them to make the joy return to Philadelphia. Despite the bad recent results, Ottawa is a team with a positive record, and with more points than Flyers.

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers 3Way (1X2) -105 (1.95) Bookmaker, Goalwin

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Boston Bruins

This will be a game between the two most improving teams this month. Toronto finally started to have regularly wins, and Bruins finally achieve more than one win in a row.

Toronto had a 3-17 record since the start of the season, but since that record they are 7-3. They really turned things up, and that's something I expected, as this team is one of the most solid teams beyond the players. However, I consider also that Gustavsson were the key to turn things, as this rookie were the starter in the nets in the 3 first wins during that rough start of the season. Since that, we were the goaltender as well when the team turned things up. It's true that since his injure, the team still winning games, however they aren't so solid, and their wins are not as easy and unquestionable as before. On the road, they are 4-1 in L5, amazing results, but most of the teams they faced were soft on defense. They are not good on defense, but they are make up their efforts on offense, usually scoring more than the opponents.

Boston his finally the team that we all expected! The best team on regular season in last year are finally showing their game, allowing few goals per game, and taking all the opportunities they got to score. The return of Savard has ended a losing streak for the team, who had struggled a lot in the beginning of the season. The injuries of some key players made Bruins a weird team, as they are a good defense in that spawn, but their offense didn't produce anything, having few games without any goal scored. But that problems are now treaty, and the team is showing a great game and trying to cover the lost time they had lost to playoffs.

Few days ago, Boston hosted Toronto. Easy win by 7-2. It was an opportunity to Boston study the weak points of Toronto. Since that game, Boston didn't play any game, but Toronto hosted Trashers and Islanders yesterday. So, it will be a B2B game for Toronto, and will return to Boston where they had a hell day 5 days ago. It's hard to see other outcome than the some kind of result. Boston defending well, and taking advantage on Toronto weak defense.

Pick: Boston Bruins PL -1.5 +180 (2.80) The Greek
