The 65th Square
sorry not a sport stat

but

consider myself pretty solid on wwii history

was reading a book yesterday

and was floored to read this

over 50 million people died in wwii

and over 1/2 of those were from the soviet union

blah blah all old news

but here is the kicker

soviet men from the ages of 19 to 23

only 3 percent survived

can you believe that?

imagine if 97 percent of all the us boys that are college age were wiped out

WOW!

Is that men aged 19-23 that were in the military, or all from the Soviet Union? Or were all Soviets in that age/gender range sent to the military?

That stat CANNOT be correct. There has to be a kicker. Just isn't possible. ....Not even 97% of military in that age were killed. The 25 million part is about right - but that also includes Stalin's cleansing.

Just found a site listing random WW2 facts.

http://www.freebeertomorrow.net/s1/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=2

80% of Soviet males born in 1923 didn't survive World War 2

I'm assuming they pick that year because it was highest fatality rate. 80% is definitely more believable ....but still amazing.

At the time of Pearl Harbor, the top US Navy command was called CINCUS (pronounced ?sink us?), the shoulder patch of the US Army?s 45th Infantry division was the swastika, and Hitler?s private train was named ?Amerika?. All three were soon changed for PR purposes.

The only nation that Germany declared war on was the USA.

...hey this site is pretty interesting.

Site is interesting.

I'm not an expert on WWII by any stretch, but from everything I've ever read the Soviets did more than carry their weight. If these figures are in fact true, they are astounding.

The youngest US serviceman was 12 year old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded in combat and given a Dishonorable Discharge for lying about his age. (His benefits were later restored by act of Congress).

:scared

A number of air crewmen died of farts. (ascending to 20,000 ft. in an un-pressurized aircraft causes intestinal gas to expand 300%!)
