On the course!
72 hole matchup

R Fowler +100 over P. Mickelson

I don't think an "old guy" will get around this course for 72 holes without some heavy breathing.

- - If this was any other U.S. Open venue, there is no way I would be on the newly minted Masters champion and his caddy at this price . . . If this was almost any other U.S. Open venue (Merion, Winged Foot, and maybe Bethpage, being the exceptions), I would not be on Phil at this price . . . At any U.S. Open venue, Rose would carry some of my cash this week, and I think his thoughts and approach on the venue we have have been as solid as any . . . If this was any other U.S. Open venue, I'd indulge in a few quid on Montgomerie in the Top European Market . . . All things being equal, I like the fact Snedeker missed the cut at Augusta . . . Noren is my hunch and value loser for the week, coming from a very similar angle I liked last week for Karrie Webb as a hunch and a value loser . . . IMO, this is not the week for Glover to yip his way close to any championship . . . I hope to squeeze in a couple more hours of capping for some additional plays, but my limited time this week will be going into hours of watching the Open, not in capping it.

10. Going out to practice now, but if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them later on in the day.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
9. If you come in with no expectations of how a US Open "should" be, there's no reason not to at least think it's fair.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
8. Chambers Bay may not appeal to everyone, but it's an interesting departure from traditional US Open golf. I like it.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
7. Overall I will say that the design fascinates me. If it doesn't get out of control, if they keep a little water on it, I think it's great

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
6. The walk for the players is tough. For the spectators? I can't fathom how my parents are going to be able to follow me. Huge issue IMO.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
5. But the greens roll fine. You have to get over the look of them, and believe it will roll true. Because for the most part, it will.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
4. The greens have the worst-conditioned look I've ever seen in a professional golf event.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
3. Saying that - the choice you make off tee impacts your ability to hit your approach shots close. Will you lay back and trust your 6 iron?

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
2. The fairways border on enormous. Very generous off tee. Good mix of clubs to hit as well. Driver on down to 5-iron.

Brad Fritsch ‏@BradFritsch 3h3 hours ago
1. If you like the color green on golf courses, this might not be the place for you.

Round 1 plays (4pts):

Zach Johnson to beat Paul Casey +100 @ Paddy Power
A big difference in form between a player who has seven top-20 finishes in his last eight starts and a player who has withdrawn from two of his last three events (and finished 43rd in the other). I don't see Johnson as a contender this week, but Casey is in poor form and it has been eight years since he finished better than 40th in this event. No matter how much the course should suit Casey more than his opponent, this is still a U.S. Open and I can't see him as the favourite in this matchup.

Chris Kirk to beat Patrick Reed +109 @ 5Dimes [also available @ SkyBet, Pinnacle, The Greek and Carib]
Whether it is off-course family issues or a lack of on-course focus, Reed hasn't been in contention to win an event in over three months. He has made lots of cuts, but has not been at the top of his game. The same cannot be said for Kirk who won the Crowne Plaza Invitational and is now only one place behind Reed in the World Rankings. Kirk finished ahead of him in their only common previous U.S. Open (2014) and has a far better demeanour to coping with a U.S. Open setup and the particularly high element of luck that is expected to play its part on this course. As with the previous matchup, I wouldn't have made Reed the favourite in this matchup.

John Senden to beat Joost Luiten +105 @ 5Dimes
With top-15 finishes in two of the last three U.S. Opens, Senden appears to be a better-suited player to this event than Luiten who missed the cut on his debut last year. The Dutchman is without a top-10 finish in 2015 so I don't expect that to happen this week. Senden finished in the top-10 in The Players Championship and is a perfect 5-0-0 h2h against Luiten in 2015. Again, I have a different player as the favourite in the matchup.

[unofficial rd4 system play: Lee D tb Aiken +106; Harman tb Levy -105]

- sensed a little disdain for the course setup from Furyk in a few interviews this week - the price on this matchup (though I wish I had gotten it last night) along with the generally jovial attitude of "the most interesting golfer in the world" are enough for me to hit the button

- not a huge Bubba fan but could he be flying any lower under the radar this week? if he were ever to succeed in a US Open I would think that this would be the course - tons of love for Lefty for obvious reasons

- another way under the radar is Sergio - seems like Chambers and Garcia should be a nice fit

for round 1, playing:

Jimenez +160 vs Furyk
Watson +105 vs Mickelson

to win:

Sergio +4000

as always, good luck
