people judge themselves by different standards, and we are our own harshest critics. im no expert, but basic sense and a brief background in psychology tells me of victims who live with a sense of helplessness, or a sense of shame and frustration at their decision to not fight back.

**anybody with a high school eudcation should tell you that mountains of evidence suggest humans are not rational creatures, but reactive and emotional ones.

I ask you what did he have to gain by chasing them down?
The freedom you speak of would have been stripped had he killed someone.
I would not classify him as helpless. Vernon pulled the gun on them.

Stand your ground is one thing. Which he did. Just saying he pushed it way too far and no good outcome was going to happen once the first bullet was fired.

The stories I keep reading never mention him chasing after them, but simply refusing to give up his wallet then got shot in the head.

Now that is terrible.

God I can't stand thieves, get a freakin job.

regarding who? Forrest? ESPN says "The victim and suspect became involved in a brief foot chase," Meadows said. "At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. The victim was shot at least once in the head."

anyone that can beat Sugar Shane twice is a damn good fighter.

What I have read of this is that the boy was in the Chevron station. He did not see what was happening. The boy was not in the car.

This is on Whitehall St in zone 3 , one of the worst areas of Atlanta for crime. I used to work within a mile from this Chevron. It is no place to be. There are always people standing outside this station. Predators I think they call them.

Here is the deal though. Anyone that gets out of a new Jaguar to put air in his tires in this area of town is asking for trouble. Thats what these thugs look for. Man go to Buckhead and put air in your fawking tires. Drive them on the rims until you get home. Its common street smarts not to put yourself in that situation. I guess having the gun with him made him feel he would be safe, but with the young kid with him I dont know.

So they rob him of his watch and a necklace. And he chases them with his gun.

Come on man. Where is your head. Just call the police and call it a day.

Cant take back that kind of decision.

RIP - great fighter

PS - one night I was driving home from work in this area on I-20 , the expressway. I had a flat tire. There was a big fence beside the road and alot of cars at that time of night. I got out with a
.357 stuffed in my belt. I had just finished changing the tire when these two guys climb the fence and jump over. I was just closing the trunk. As they approached I fired a shot into the air. Then I pointed it at them. They backed up and jumped back over the fence. You just never know .

Yahoo report said this:

Forrest, 38, was shot and killed Saturday during a robbery, Atlanta police said. One of his trainers and closest friends, Charles Watson, told an Atlanta television station that Forrest stopped at a Mechanicsville, Ga., gas station to fix a problem with a tire when the incident occurred. He offered money to a man who helped him and was soon surrounded by several men, who somehow took his wallet, Watson told WXIA-TV. Watson told the station that Forrest scuffled with the men briefly in an apparent attempt to regain his wallet. One of the men jumped out of the car and shot him in the back of the head and then shot him six more times while he was on the ground.

Man Buckhead has changed over the years. About 10 years ago I was visiting my friend in Atlanta and he said we can go to Buckhead for dinner and drinks at some clubs.
A couple of years ago when visiting I suggested we go there and he said only if you want to get murdered.
He said white people no longer go within miles of Buckhead once the sun goes down.

Pro boxer Vernon Forrest fatally shot in Atlanta
By KATIE LESLIE

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Former professional boxer Vernon ?The Viper? Forrest was killed Saturday night when a robbery turned into a gunfire exchange, according to Atlanta Police.

Atlanta Police Detective Lt. Keith Meadows said Forrest was shot seven to eight times in the back after chasing one of the thieves.

The incident began at 11 p.m. at the Chevron on Whitehall Street in Southwest Atlanta when Forrest, 38, stopped to put air in the tires of his Jaguar, said Meadows.

A male suspect approached Forrest and robbed him of a few items at gunpoint, he said. Forrest, who was also armed, chased the suspect to an area near McDaniel and Fulton Streets.

Meadows said there is evidence Forrest used his weapon but did not know if the suspect was shot.

An 11-year-old boy was in the Chevron at the time of the robbery. The boy, who is the son of Forrest?s girlfriend, according to Meadows, was able to provide police with a description of the suspect.

Police are looking for that man and a second suspect who left in a red Monte Carlo, Meadows said.

The boy did not see the shooting, he added.

Forrest, a longtime Atlanta resident, started boxing at age 9 and won his first major title in 2001, when he defeated Raul Frank for the IBF welterweight title. He is a recent WBC middleweight champ and 1992 Olympian who had a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts.

He achieved long-sought recognition with two wins over ?Sugar? Shane Mosley in 2002 that earned him the title of Ring Magazine?s Fighter of the Year.

?My goal, once I?m done, is to be considered one of the best boxers in my era,? Forrest told the AJC in 2007.

Al Mitchell, who first trained Forrest when he was an amateur and later as a pro, said Forrest was a guy who did everything right.

?He didn?t take drugs,? said Mitchell, who learned of the news through Forrest?s manager Charles Watson. ?He wasn?t involved with gangs. He lived his life the right way. He was a gentleman.?

Forrest beat Ricardo Mayorga in 2003 for the WBC welterweight title and WBA super welterweight title. In 2007, he won the WBC light middleweight title against Carlos Baldomir.

In his last major match-up, in 2008, he reclaimed his WBC 154-pound title at age 37 after battering his rival, 27-year-old Sergio Mora in a unanimous decision.

Mitchell says ?The Viper? was training to fight again.

?He told me his plan was to fight again in September and then fight for the title in December,? Mitchell said. ?He was supposed to call me this week with details.?

Forrest was also involved in charity work. He started Destiny?s Child Inc., which provided housing and assistance to mentally challenged adults.

?I trained a lot of kids ... and most of them are now teachers or doing something else,? said Mitchell. ?They?re all good role models. They understand what life is about. They take care of their family. Vernon was like that. He took care of his mother, his sister, his son. He took care of his friends. How can something like this happen? Just in the wrong place at the wrong time ? that?s all it was.?

"the bunker"
this is why ,imo, the death penalty should never be completely banned...

i respect a differing opinion on the matter, but, how many lives did this senseless cowardly bullshit alter forever?....it`s not just about the victim....

and there ain`t no such thing as rehabilitation inn a matter such as this...you forfeit any chance at rehabilitation based on the heinous nature of the senseless crime and the people who`s lives will be forever altered...

retribution?....in this kind of scenario, damn right....

/uncivilized knuckle dragger(and proud of it)...

Still alot of clubs and young people out there at night. Its a dangerous area getting back to your car.

One of the most expensive areas also. So thats pretty scary .

But Mechanicsville and Buckhead are like comparing a war zone to a stroll in the park.

world is fawked up nowadays.

Here's another point of vue posted on a sister forum:

Here is what happened according to someone very close to the situation.

Here is what I know, no way was it a carjacking.
Vernon's godson was in the car with him and had to use the bathroom, so Vernon stopped at this store and went in, upon coming out he noticed that his tire was low so decided to get some air, a guy walked up to Vernon asking him if he needed help then asked him if he could have a few bucks, Vernon told him that he needed no help and that he had no cash on him and started back to servicing his tire when the man saw that Vernon's wallet was in the car and snuck his hand through the door and snatched it.
Vernon goes running after him with his gun but loses him, upon walking back to his car a monte carlo pulls out and shoots him once then 1 guy gets out after the fact and shoots him 6 more times and then drives off.

Seems like they knew exactly who he was and he may have been targeted.

I think the Yahoo write is a Vernon guy trying to make him seem like a complete victim as all other accounts make it sound opposite of his.

That would make a ton of sense as to why he would run after the guy.
If one guy jacks my wallet then I would probably chase after him as well.
Especially if I had a gun to threaten him to drop the wallet.

I serioulsy doubt these thugs knew who he was.

They were pissed that Forrest ran after their buddy with a gun and pulled up to show him what happens when you do that in the streets.

This is a random act of evil.

Atlanta councilman Mitchell carjacked at gunpoint
By ALYSE KNORR

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Atlanta city Councilman Ceasar Mitchell was carjacked at gunpoint early Sunday morning, said Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes.

The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Lena Street in northwest Atlanta.

Mitchell?s vehicle was later recovered at about 4 a.m. at 1425 Joseph E. Boone Blvd.

Mitchell, chairman of the council's Public Safety Committee, was not injured during the ordeal.

Since his election to the City Council in 2001, Mitchell, the son of an Atlanta police officer, has chaired the Public Safety Committee and the Community Development/Human Resources Committee, which oversees the city?s economic development activities.

In 2007, Mitchell made a push for an expanded foot patrol program for new Police Academy graduates in Atlanta?s two highest crime zones.

Last July, Mitchell launched a mayoral campaign to succeed Shirley Franklin. He shifted his candidacy from the mayoral race to council president in April.

Sunday?s incident marks the second time in three months that an Atlanta City Council member has been robbed.

Atlanta City Council President Lisa Borders? town home in the Centennial Place complex was burglarized in May by suspects who kicked in a glass door while the mayoral candidate slept upstairs.
................................................................

When this happens on Atlanta streets to City Councilmen, no one is really safe anymore.

WTF is he doing on Lena St at 0200

This is another kill zone area. Why didnt he just go down to Simpson St and get out and flash his rolex watch in the moonlight. :sadwave:
