2 Proud Boys charged with conspiracy in Capitol riot; 1 had bomb-making manual on thumb drive, feds say

WILL CLEVELAND Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...ds-allege-rochester-ny-proud-boys/4322728001/

ROCHESTER, NY ? Federal prosecutors on Friday announced conspiracy charges against two members of the Proud Boys, an extremist group with ties to white nationalism, in relation to the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Dominic Pezzola, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Rochester, New York, and William Pepe, an employee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from Beacon, New York, were indicted on a slew of new charges late Friday. According to the New York Times, this is the first conspiracy indictment related to the Proud Boys.

Pezzola was charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding a United Stated Capitol police officer, according to the FBI. He possessed a thumb drive containing instructions on how to make homemade firearms, poisons, and explosives, federal prosecutors revealed in a detention application Friday.

Some of the documents on the thumb drive are titled "Advanced Improvised Explosives" and "Ragnar's Big Book of Homemade Weapons." Prosecutors are arguing Pezzola, 43, should be held without bail pending his trial. FBI agents recovered the thumb drive after executing a search warrant on Pezzola's home on Jan. 15.

Pezzola and Pepe are accused of working together to interfere with police officers protecting the Capitol during the certification of the presidential election, according to a news release. The indictment remained sealed late Friday night, so it's unclear how Pezzola and Pepe allegedly conspired together.

Woman who said she wanted to shoot Pelosi during Capitol riot arrested

At least 160 people have been charged federally with crimes related to the riot that left five people dead.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/co...-pelosi-friggin-brain-during-capitol-n1256275

By Nicole Acevedo

Two women were arrested in connection to the U.S. Capitol riot where one of them posted a video on social media saying they were looking for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "to shoot her in the friggin? brain but we didn?t find her,? according to federal prosecutors.

Dawn Bancroft and Diana Santos-Smith were arrested in Pennsylvania Friday after federal authorities received a tip about the "selfie" video, which appeared to be filmed by Bancroft, according to the criminal complaint. The video depicted Bancroft wearing a red ?Make America Great Again? ski-cap style hat and Santos-Smith with a ?Make America Great Again? baseball hat in the process of attempting to exit the U.S. Capitol building alongside a mob of other supporters of former President Donald Trump on Jan. 6.

?We broke into the Capitol ? we got inside, we did our part,? Bancroft said in the video, according to the complaint. ?We were looking for Nancy to shoot her in the friggin? brain but we didn?t find her.?

When interviewed by the FBI around Inauguration Day, Santos-Smith initially told authorities she attended Trump?s rally but did not enter the Capitol building. When agents showed her Bancroft's "selfie" video, Santos-Smith admitted she lied. Santos-Smith said she entered the Capitol to protest but had not planned it in advanced, according to the criminal complaint.

While both Bancroft and Santos-Smith admitted they entered the Capitol building "for approximately 30 seconds to one minute," they denied entering to any offices.

Both women are facing charges, including knowingly entering and remaining in restricted buildings without lawful authority, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Bancroft and Santos-Smith are among at least 160 people who have been charged federally with crimes related to the riot that left five people dead. Among them are also QAnnon supporter Jacob Anthony Chansley ? also known as Jake Angeli or "Q Shaman" ? and Dominic Pezzola, a well-known member of the far-right nationalist group the Proud Boys.

Chansley, who was photographed at the Capitol carrying a 6-foot spear and wearing a horned fur costume during the riot, pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges that include knowingly entering a restricted building without lawful authority and for violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, court documents show. A day earlier his lawyer offered Chansley to testify at former President Donald Trump?s impeachment trial next month.

Pezzola was one of the first to lead the charge both outside and inside the Capitol, effectively overwhelming police defenses after stealing an officer?s riot shield, according to a document filed by prosecutors who are seeking to have Pezzola held until trial.

"The defendant?s actions show planning, determination, and coordination. His stated desire to commit further acts of violence, combined with his access to weapons- and bomb-making manuals, is extremely concerning," the court document says.

Prosecutors, citing social media posts and surveillance video, said Pezzola and another Proud Boy member helped thousands of people reach Capitol grounds after they moved a piece of the fence that left police unprotected. Pezzola allegedly then pulled out a riot shield and used it to break a building window.

"Moreover, although the defendant turned himself in on the arrest warrant, he did so only after going on the run, changing his appearance, and apparently turning off his cell phone," the filing said about Pezzola's actions following the riot.

The FBI has found evidence suggesting some rioters coordinated the assault on the Capitol, which includes Pezzola's actions, while discussions of potential violence were also taking place online in portals such as TheDonald.win, Parler, and Telegram.

The additional arrests come as authorities are working on heightening security measures for U.S. lawmakers. On Thursday, Capitol Police asked members of Congress to report travel plans in order to increase protections for traveling lawmakers through the region's major airports and Washington?s Union Station.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said that part of the threat is an ?enemy? within the chamber, in reference to colleagues who ?want to bring guns on the floor and have threatened violence on other members of Congress.?

Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., said Friday she requested to move her Capitol office away from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., claiming she ?berated? her in the hallway without a mask.

Six more alleged Oath Keepers charged over Capitol riot
BY HARPER NEIDIG - 02/19/21 04:19 PM EST

https://thehill.com/regulation/cour...lleged-oath-keepers-charged-over-capitol-riot

Federal prosecutors announced charges on Friday against six people affiliated with the right-wing paramilitary group Oath Keepers for their roles in the Capitol riot last month.

All six were arrested this week in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. They are facing various charges, including conspiracy and obstruction of an official proceeding, which carries a maximum of 20 years in prison.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office in D.C., all six are being charged as codefendants along with three other people affiliated with the Oath Keepers who had been charged last month.

Graydon Young, 54; Kelly Meggs, 52; and Connie Meggs, 59, were arrested in Florida this week. Laura Steele, 52, was arrested in Greensboro, N.C., on Wednesday. And Sandra Ruth Parker, 62, and Bennie Alvin Parker, 70, were both arrested in Morrow, Ohio, on Thursday.

Authorities had already charged Jessica Marie Watkins of Ohio and two of her companions ? Thomas Caldwell of Clarke County, Va., and Donovan Crowl of Champaign County, Ohio ? for their roles in the riot. Prosecutors say that Watkins is the leader of the Ohio State Regular Militia, which shares many of its members with the Oath Keepers.

According to the prosecutors, Watkins had been awaiting "activation" from former President Trump in the weeks after the election.

The Oath Keepers are alleged to have conspired together to storm the Capitol to obstruct Congress's certification of the Electoral College vote. Prosecutors pointed to images and videos of the riot that show members of the group moving through the crowd in a tactical formation called a "stack."

Kelly Meggs, allegedly a member of a Florida Oath Keepers chapter, sent a Facebook message in late December saying ?Trump said It?s gonna be wild!!!!!!! It?s gonna be wild!!!!!!! He wants us to make it WILD that?s what he?s saying. He called us all to the Capitol and wants us to make it wild!!! Sir Yes Sir!!! Gentlemen we are heading to DC pack your s***,? according to a Justice Department press release.

At the same time, according to the prosecutors, Young, who's also said to be a member of the same Florida chapter, allegedly arranged for a group to receive instruction from a Florida company that specializes in combat and firearms training.

The Justice Department pointed to messages from people in the group that appeared to suggest they were willing to go into the Capitol unarmed on January 6 because they would have a ?heavy QRF 10 Min out," a military acronym for quick reaction force, which are typically units capable of rapid deployment.

In addition to the various charges that all nine are facing, Caldwell and Young are also accused of tampering with evidence for deleting Facebook messages.

It's unclear if any of the six new defendants are represented by attorneys.

A Florida man is expected Monday to get the first felony sentence stemming from the Capitol riot.

Paul Allard Hodgkins pleaded guilty last month to one count of obstructing an official proceeding for breaching the Senate on January 6, the AP reported. Prosecutors hope Hodgkins will serve 18 months in prison even though the maximum sentence is 20 years and a fine of $250,000.

Various footage from January 6 shows Hodgkins inside the Capitol and Senate building with a large Donald Trump flag. He also brought along a backpack containing eye goggles, white latex gloves, and rope, according to the government's sentencing memorandum.

While prosecutors note that Hodgkins didn't personally destroy property or attack officers, they said he "made a series of choices along the way, culminating in his personal role in obstructing the vote count-related conduct in the Senate chamber and the felony criminal charge of which he was convicted."

Assistant US Attorney Mona Sedky said on Monday that while he didn't personally damage the building, he was with the mob that did.

"January 6 was an act of domestic terrorism," Sedky said, and noted that while Hodgkins himself did not engage in domestic terrorism himself, "he was part of the parcel enacting domestic terrorism going on around him."

Rioters ultimately caused around $1.4 million in property damages to the US Capitol, according to the sentencing memorandum. That likely includes the costs of broken windows, doors, gates, and computers.

Hodgkins' attorneys told prosecutors that he wanted to be one of the first people to plead guilty in the hopes of receiving lighter sentencing. The attempt may be working, as prosecutors have already agreed to waive the financial fines against him.

More than 575 people have been arrested in relation to the attempted insurrection, and 15 have pleaded guilty so far.

This seems......bad. :0003
The two sources, both of whom have been granted anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, describe participating in ?dozens? of planning briefings ahead of that day when Trump supporters broke into the Capitol as his election loss to President Joe Biden was being certified.
?I remember Marjorie Taylor Greene specifically,? the organizer says. ?I remember talking to probably close to a dozen other members at one point or another or their staffs.?
For the sake of clarity, we will refer to one of the sources as a rally organizer and the other as a planner. Rolling Stone has confirmed that both sources were involved in organizing the main event aimed at objecting to the electoral certification, which took place at the White House Ellipse on Jan. 6. Trump spoke at that rally and encouraged his supporters to march to the Capitol. Some members of the audience at the Ellipse began walking the mile and a half to the Capitol as Trump gave his speech. The barricades were stormed minutes before the former president concluded his remarks.
These two sources also helped plan a series of demonstrations that took place in multiple states around the country in the weeks between the election and the storming of the Capitol. According to these sources, multiple people associated with the March for Trump and Stop the Steal events that took place during this period communicated with members of Congress throughout this process.
Along with Greene, the conspiratorial pro-Trump Republican from Georgia who took office earlier this year, the pair both say the members who participated in these conversations or had top staffers join in included Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.), Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), and Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas).
