Minute of Your Time: Jason Malloy
By John Koch, News 3 Sports Director
(NEWS 3) - Jason Malloy, senior linebacker for WMU from Inkster, Michigan. Last season he had 3 tackles, one for a loss against Virginia Tech. He is aware that he will be a key player going against the ?Untouchables? of Virginia Tech.
Running backs Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones are two of the best in the nation. We got a minute of Malloy?s time as he discussed the challenge of 5th ranked Virginia Tech.
What are you thinking about with two of the nation?s top running backs coming to Kalamazoo?
Both of these backs are very good. For us to beat these guys we have to stop the run. They will line up and run on every play regardless of the personnel that we have on the field. They will test us all day. They will run the ball, run the ball, run the ball.
Playing last year, even though it was a 31 to 0 loss has to help
It helps a lot. We can watch film and see what we did wrong last year. Basically, we broke down fundamentally, not standing square to the line of scrimmage, not keeping your gap. If you don?t do what you are supposed to do, the whole defense breaks down.
Finally WMU plays a marquee game, a ranked team at home, not on the road. Will the home crowd be a big factor?
It will help tremendously. I think our crowd helps us at every game, but this game, it will be the difference. It will help us tremendously.
How excited are you, the team - especially having two weeks to get ready for this game?
Very excited. Last week we had a great week of practice. I think it was one of the best weeks of practice since I?ve been here. We put in the game plan last week, this week its all about refreshing things. I think we are up to the challenge. We have to defend our home turf. We take it personal. We don?t like to lose at home.
Is it good that the game starts at noon?
I think it really helps out, because you can sit at a hotel room all day and get anxious, time goes by slowly. You want to get up in the morning, get a little breakfast and play some football.
Virginia Tech is so good at breaking tackles. Is pursuit going to be critical this weekend?
We are prepared for those things. Those are good running backs. They will break tackles and they will beat you outside if you don?t wrap ?em up and pursue the ball. Our coaches have put it in our heads, we have to pursue, its part of our defense.
Do you have a sense of this game, what it means to everyone on campus and in the area?
Everyone has been talking about this game ever since Virginia Tech was put on our schedule. I think everyone is excited. It will be a great challenge for us and for the whole community. It?s going to be great for the city of Kalamazoo.
