Spurrier seems real intent on winning it.

Of course in the pre-season, that usually means waiting to put your backup in. What's it mean when every quarterback on the team is a backup?

According to Nolan's column, Garcia will see little action so it's expected to be ugly with McNown seeing a lot of playing time... I feel getting the 3 points is the way I'd go if I had to bet.

Just my 2 cents

I heard on another site that Rattay would see the bulk of the action and Doman and McNoun would get the crumbs and McNoun would likely see more action the following week.

Amazing isnt it. I have never seen this before.
I have been monitering both the Washington Post and the S F Chronicle. Nothing has changes the last 3 or 4 days. I was at a couple of local casinos today in Las Vegas, and they said the computer told them to make the line Wash -2.5. The line wasnt changed by money coming in there. In fact they had received very little money on either side.
It seems the powers that be decided that the line was wrong.

just because Spurrier "wants to win" does not mean that he will:shrug:

I am sure that Mariucci would rather win than lose also:shrug:

I might take the points with the niners for a small play (especially if I can get the hook). I think it is going to take awhile for the Washington Offense to grasp what Spurrier wants to do. I also think if Spurrier tries to run up the score that most coaches will answer the call with some scoring of their own.

p.s.

Rattay is SF QB most of the game. He is the solid #2 QB. Garcia will start the game.
The (probably) best QB for Wash is Mathews and he is not playing this game at all. It is Rosenfels and Wueffel as QBs for Wash. Both of them would be far behind Rattay. In fact they probably would have been cut by SF. Does that sound like a head coach that wants to win?

Line movement is typical over reaction to Steve Spurrier saying he would like to win. Trust me he does not care if he wins this game, he is just placating the DC press.

If he really cared about this game Shane Mathews would be playing. The inside scoop is that he is pissed off that he has to play this game and does not see any real value in it. His defensive starters are not going to play much and Sage Rosenfels is terrible. If Ramsey signs soons and looks okay, I would not be surprised if Rosenfels is cut. The Skins OL is banged up and they have problems at the guard and center postion and no depth at tackle after the starters. Danny W has not been able to complete a pass over 15 yards so far in camp and I look for him to struggle with pressure on him. Shane Mathews is the QB for the Skins opening day.

Rattay is going to have to battle to keep the number 2 spot, so I look for him to play well and I agree that he is better than either Skins QB.

That said, I think the 49ers and the 3 is a gift. I liked them at -2.5. Pre-season can generate good values versus the regular season and I think this may be one of those situations. I may be wrong, but I think it merits a small wager to start the season.

Also, take Houston to win on Monday.

Bason, I tend to agree. I was trying to decide if its an UNDER. I am mostly afraid of interceptions run back for TDs, especially against Rosenfels.

4bubba you are correct believe the under should now be stayed away from. But if they want to give me SF + 3 ok. I don't think Mr M wants to be the first coach to loose to the new guy.

I agree. From the latest stories from the 49ers, I feel that there is more pressure on Mariucci than he is letting on. It "feels" that Mariucci will keep up the "coach speak" and stick with his game plan on offense, but I feel his defensive players are really starting to want to welcome Spurrier to the NFL. Mariucci did mention that he was going to play his defensive starters longer than first planned.
I feel there is going to be a lot more hitting than we have ever seen in the first preseason game.

Spurrier said RB Davis would not play much. Also there would not be much running.
This sounds like a great time for the 49ers to practice the blitz.
I expect the 49ers defense to try to send a message to the "high flying" Redskins offense for the regular season game week 3 in SF:
"You better tighten down your helmit".

What are you reading

What are you reading

What have you all been reading. Rattay has done nothing in
the NFL. The 49ers are worried that he may not be ready
to back up Garcia. There is a ton of pressure on him. He has
done nothing to warrant any confidence. Rosenfels and Wuerffel are no worse. At least Wuerffel has experience in Spurrier's system and has NFL experience.

Bottom line is this is a game Spurrier can win. And when has
he ever lost a game that he knew he could win. He will call the fancy plays, leave starters in a little longer. It's his first game and he will do all he can to win.

Mariccui has said he won't change his plan based on Spurrier. Starters will play a series or two at most.

If you like S.F. - tread very cautiously.

I took Washington +1.5 and would even take them now -3.

Actually Mariucci said he wasnt going to change his offensive game plan.

It is possible the 49ers defense and special teams will get more yards and points than BOTH offenses together.
