Varner deserved to win....and he won....

dammit:mad:

And FWIW...I always hated that rule.....why organizations in North America don't allow knees like that Cerrone knee pisses me off. But those are the rules.

Cause if u take a knee u might look like Lindland did last night. any news from him cause to me that look like a lifetimes worth of damage. My goodness he looked bad. thought we were gonna see MMA's first real casualty

Varner was gassing badly and looked for the easy way out.

Nobody is going to tell me that Varners eye was in worse shape than Quasimodo Cerrones.

Varner is a stud but that was a complete pussy move.

Linland didn't take any knees.

Maybe we should ban punches and kicks, take the fighters teeth out and let them gum each other for 3 rounds :mj07:

not so sure that i`d bet varner the next go round......cerrone is a tough nut and those subs and kicks and his cardio(not to mention the height) are tough to deal with....

i don`t think it was his eye as much as the concussion,wee...the knee doesn`t fit into an eye but it`s like getting hit with a sledge hammer...

whether he was looking to get out, ...he definitely was gassing in the last round.....

curious to see what the line will be on the rematch....i`ll be all ears if cerrone`s a big dog(say+150/200)...

btw....nice call on aldo,g.k.......that guy is a beast...love to see him in with miguel torres at some catch weight.........i think this guy could give torres some real trouble...

Almost every fighter dropped the F-bomb tonight... Villefort mumbled it in Rio accent, but he said it. Pulver said it. Varner said it. :mj07:

While i'm at it, i'll go ahead and say NO WEC 155 POUNDER will ever make it to the UFC. Neither guy fought well tonight, let's be honest... i mean this is how u fight in a TITLE FIGHT!!!? :nono: :scared

To Varner's credit, Cerrone did look like The Joker at the end of it.. i mean his face was a mess.. but not impressed with Varner, other than his submission defense. Yes, Cerrone was taken down with ease, but he is best off his back, so i dont really care...

A least featherweight is an interesting division in WEC now..... im looking forward to the March 1st event w/ Garcia/Brown and Condit/Larson rematch.

:director: Aldo is a badass, give the guy a big name at 145 already, will ya!

If Varner busted his orbital bone and really did break his hand (like he said), he'll be out at least 4 months.

Varner did a great job until the interview...that just wasn't very manly

.

I thought the same thing about the next go around. I will pass.

I don't think he was gassing that bad. Was he the more tired fighter yes. His biggest problem was his reach in my opinion. Varner also to me has a very deceiving take down game or is it Cerrone is that bad at defending them?

Cerrone impressed me tonight. I love his demeanor in the ring.

I like the no knees to the head while an opponent is down rule. I think a few rules like this increases the safety dramatically. This, in turn, keeps good/interesting fighters in the ring for a longer career.

This sport can't continue to grow if they have to replace their entire stable every 1-2 years, imo.

Also, like it or not, this sport is becoming more and more mainstream. The good comes with the bad. One good aspect is that we got to watch this card live and for free. That doesn't happen without continued growth in the sport.

Congrats to our winners!

Dawgball, I agree with the good and bad of mainstream.

I've always told my friends that I hope it doesn't become too popular. If it does, there will be some dorky media guy that decided he's going to make a big deal about the violence and things will get changed.

dawgball....you make valid points....but I have always hated that rule. I like what they do in Japan (knee guy in head when down)...although in Japan no elbows...and I find that silly. But hey...rules are rules and ya have to follow em.

And if VArner was losing....he would have got up in the 5th...that is a fact:SIB

I know Brother, I was just taking the piss :toast:

There is a cracking arguement going on at the underground in regards to this fight.

If you look at the slow motion replay of the ending, Varners knees and hands are off the canvas just as Cerrone throws and the knee lands. The blow might not have been illegal.

I just find it funny that Varner said he could not see but managed to follow the doctors finger with his eyes.
He was having a hard time standing and putting his shirt on.
The kicker for me was the Renzo Gracie dry heaving at one point.

Varner had been hit with harder shots during the fight, was running out of gas badly and had Quasimodo Cerrone coming after him with 3 minutes left like the Terminator.
It was a world class ACTING job.

If Varner was smart, he would have taken the 5 minutes to get his wind back and finished the fight legit and looking like a warrior but he probably didn't think about that during his academy award performance.

i watched Varner/Cerrone again last night, and it really was a good fight. Sometimes it takes two viewings for me to appreciate the effort these guys put in. An averago joe would have collapsed in the ring by round two, but those guys were still going strong in the 4th rd.

I think Varner hit the mat about 25 times during ground n pound, thats probably what broke it. Testament to Cerrone's guard and defense on the ground.
