Here are some answers that might help, as well as opening myself to questions you may have.
First of all the simplest way to lose weight is to understand what goes into weight gain. SImple thing to understand is that is it takes 3600 claories to make a pound of fat, that is 3600 extra calories, likewise to lose a pound of fat you must operate at a deficit pf 3600 calories and that is done simply in two ways:
Decrease your caloric intake weekly by around 1800 calories, and increase your expenditure of calories by 1800 a week. Sounds simple right, you will have to give and take a bit to find your correct calroies that you need everyday...you can find that on the net using your size and weight parameters. (That will give you a ball park figure)
The more muscle you have the more calories will be burned as they are more efficient, so besdes your cardio work, some type of weight traiing program a minimum of 3-4 times a week is required. (No gym membership or weights, use slt bags, or plyometrics which will tone your musles instead and a soimple plyometric is going through a motion while flexing the working muscle. (Ex. Doing squats without weight but flexing all the weigh up and down. You can do that with all major muscle groups.)
To address what the Gib mentioned about the alternating between walking and sprinting etc...Reebok actually did a study on that and the sstem is designed to shock your system into thinking it was going to be heavily strained from the get go, and the mixture of endurance would use up fat stores first instead of metabolizing the simple sugars within your system from your diet. If I need to I can go more in depth, but basically if you run for a mile, or walk for a mile it has been determined that walking a mile will burn more fat (stores) than running as it is a more aerobic exercie and allows your body to go through the hard and slow process of breaking down fat for energy vs. running which for the most part in quick sprints etc, becomes anaerobic thus uses quciker easier fuels in the body.
As for the 6 meal's a day it is true. The reason it kicks up your metabolism. Most people cut out eating 2 of their meals and then eat one large one or soemthing along those lines, what happens is over a period of time your body tens to go in what is called a starvation mode. Meaning the calroies you are taking in is more readily conserved as fat within your system because your body knows it will not get fed on a regular basis, and fat stores can slowly be broken down and continue our life which is what the reaction is. Where as when you eat 6 times a day (3 square meals and 3 snacks a day such as carrot sticks, celery w/peanut butter and raisins, apples, can of tuna etc) will make your system more efficient and consistently revved up if you will because your body then knows it will get the fuel necessary. That why we call it feeding the machine.
As for diets etc., blah, blah, blah! Work for some, and in the end they end up working for none. That's not just my opinion, it's study after study showing people when dieting keep on putting weight back on, sometimes even more than before they started. Weight loss, and health is a lifestyle choice, not a quick fix.
God luck on your endeavors and good health to you!
