Last three Patriots playoff games have been ugly.
Many reasons.
First and foremost: The team wasn't as hungry. 2007. Who wanted it more? The Giants. Last year when Baltimore comes in here and stomps on your head, same thing. This year, no one's talking about the Jets except themselves. Same thing.
2007. The Superteam. At the end of the day, bunch of scrubs who didn't want to play together as a team. Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss. No "championship" pedigree. Yeah, they were destroying teams, but late that year, teams were catching up, and at the end of the day, they figured out the blueprint.
2009. Same story. This, plus being down 3 scores in the first quarter really hurts ones game plan.
2010. Tide's turning. Getting rid of some dead weight. No more Thomas, Moss, Springs, Burgess. Young team. Very inexperienced. Say what you want about BB, but he made his young guys play and turned their weakness (inexperience) into a strength (getting them to buy into his system).
So how did they lose? If Crumpler catches the TD, and they go up 7-0, you have a different game. Pressure was brought all over the place, and the Patriots were made one dimensional. During they year, they used the pass to open up the run. The Jets gave them the run all day, and it just was not successful for the Patriots.
Hats off to the Jets. Played a hell of a game. And outschemed Belichick twice this year. Kudos.
Overrated? A little bit perhaps, but they did destroy some pretty talented teams, on the road, and at home.
We've learned also that defense wins championships. This is not to say that the new mark of a champ is going to be the 2000 Ravens again, since I think that may have been too lopsided the other way, but it certainly won't be last years Saints. Look at all the remaining teams in the playoffs, top defenses.
The Patriots are no longer the underdog, a role which they thrived in. 2001: the really ultimate underdog story. 2003: Still a lot of people not convinced. 2004 team was probably the best of this 2000+era pats. They used to come out and say they were disrespected, but that team was an absolute wagon. The real difference? Those teams were defense first, offense second.
Roles reversed now, and unless they're playing from ahead, they're running into issues.
Congrats to the Jets, hopefully you can beat Big Ben and his broke head.
