Hammer1 need not respond, in fact I'd like Jack to just ban him from the thread from the word go.

Moving on......

If your reply is "Professional basketball player" and you're 5'4'' and can't play worth a damn that's not what I'm talking about, I mean within the confines of everyday life how would you spend your days if you could? This thread is not about The Trooper, but I'm certain he gets so much hate because people are jealous that they can't just pack it up do whatever it is they want in life. They don't have the means or they don't have the guts to walk away from their comfort zone. You gotta believe Trooper took some risks going to Vegas on a limited roll like he did. I'm rooting for him.

As for the rest of us, what do you want to do and what stops you from doing it? Life, as I've been reminded lately, is short. You don't know how long you get so maybe making the most of it is more important than that comfort zone we all seek. I'd love to live in Vegas, or by a beach, but what I'd like right now is just less stress from my day to day job. It's a job that treats me well, pays me well and still has a pension plan that I am 20 years into. It's been a real struggle recently. Too many hours, not enough support, etc... and it's not getting better anytime soon.

I'm struggling with the thoughts of walking away from it, but I'm walking away from a lot. Good pay, 5 weeks vacation, make my own schedule, pension, etc...., but I hate it anymore. Financially the only right move is to stay where I am, but shouldn't life be more important than that? What about enjoying the limited days we get?

We all have obligations, wives, kids, bills, etc... and the ability to provide for all of that can't be discounted. My kids both start college in the fall and maybe it's an excuse to put everything on the backburner but I'm thinking a four year plan to "start over" is in order.

Anyone here ever walked away from a good job they knew they couldn't replace? Do you regret it or maybe even recommend it?

On the course!
I think laziness is the biggest hurdle to carry for most people. Just easier to live where you were born, rather than make a push. I give all the credit in the world to people who "take a chance" in life.

Agreed that laziness is one of the culprits, but fear of failure is the biggest IMO. I know what I know at this point in my life. Bills are paid, kids will go to college and I'll pay for it and still have enough money to take at least one decent vacation each year along with going to the local casino weekly. Fairly comfortable and I know I can't replace this job with one that gives me the same compensation package.

Still, I wonder if "taking a chance" and leaving that comfort zone wouldn't make for better days. Maybe not though.......

Liking what you do is not the same as who you do it with. If you like what you do just not where or with who, then relocating would give the challenges of a fresh start while remaining in the same line of work. I fought doing this for a few years and it ate me alive, reached my breaking point and made myself relocate. Best decision I have ever made professionally. If you are wanting to go the "Burn it Down" route then obviously you will have a lot more to think about. In my perfect world I own a small restaurant on the gulf of mexico. But that is not going to happen any time soon nor would I even consider it as I have too many other things/people that take precedent. Life is all about trade-offs. If you have reached the point you don't "Need" that well paying job then, I would absolutely start planning an exit strategy. If the lack of that amount of income is going to add a lot of stress and uncertainty then it seems you would be defeating the purpose. GL

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Karl Pillemer, a perfessor of Human Development at Cornell, interviewed over 1,200 old folks, and #1 thing the oldsters regret most, what they would do over if they could, was:

I wish I hadn?t spent so much of my life worrying.

Yeah. I wish I wouldn't worry so much either but when you have people that depend on you and kids still at home it just isn't happening.

#1 yes failure and worry
#2 being alone

Otherwise I Wish I would have saved more money and made many different life choices. Gotten much better grades and got a better job.

My kids are heading into 10th and 8th grade. I have had long talks with them about getting outside their boxes and their comfort zones. I don't want them to hold back because of fear etc. I push them all the time and sometimes get slack for "being too hard on them". I want them to have better lives and opportunities than I did. Although as my daughter and I have talked once they are grown and have their own lives we would like to do some traveling together. I have a bucket list and my daughter and I have talked about making a list together of things we want to do together.

I was sheltered as a child and I think that's why I have stayed in Union County my whole life and I don't want that for them.

Although I can say in the last year I have made many changes. Switched jobs, got a promotion, have done more things without planning as much. Not been so afraid to leave PaSprint behind when he diesnt want to join in. I'm done sitting and waiting around because life is going by way too fast.

Don't take this the wrong way and it's not because of you, but I don't answer a lot of personal questions on the board because less than spectacular members have used that information to make life miserable for others.

I'm a manager for a large company who is responsible for a decent size staff in a business that the logistics department runs 24/7. The 24/7 aspect is just getting too much to take these days as the staff becomes younger and less and less reliable.
