I might be looking to change my internet provider. As of now, Iam on a cable connection and the fastest I have ever downloaded anything was abouttt 183 kps - I pay 50 bucks a month for that connection. A special going on here in Toledo....DSL will be 30 bucks a month for a year then it`ll be 50 bucks after that. Some people tell me its faster...others say its not.

Enlighten me on this please...

I would go with the DSL special. I've used both and am currently using DSL. There's been plenty of debate on this subject for years now but I can tell you this: Cable modems will slow down when there are more people online in your area because they share bandwidth. Won't have that problem with DSL (dedicated ohone line). Takes a bit longer to get to the internet with DSL just because you have to "connect" to it with a login and password, whereas with cable you just click on the browser and away you go.

Honestly, they're both about the same but I decided to switch to DSl because I kept having this problem where I would lose my damn NIC drivers everytime I plugged in my headphones into the soundcard...go figure.

Does that mean people using Cable(TV) or Internet Cable?

Hellah10... The speed of the download is also determined by the speed of the person you are downloading from... So it doesn't matter if you have Cable, DSL, or even a T3 line, if the person you are downloading from only has dialup then that will limit your download speed....

I used to be on cable before I moved..... on Cable I would get speeds of around 150-300 k/s..... I could get about 500k/s when downloading directly from my providers newsgroups....

I now have DSL and the max speeds i've got to is only around 180k/s.....

So as of right now I prefer the Cable.... but haven't had any real problems with DSL...

Do pages like espn.com or even madjacks load up as fast as they did with your cable connection?

hellah,

they give you these filters to use with your phone line where it does not interfere with your internet connection. So you can be talking on the phone while surfing the net.

Not sure about the uploading and downloading speeds but I haven't seen a significant difference from either one. I'm just glad the 56K days are behind me.

Actually.... thats the funny thing..... When downloading files I got higher speeds with Cable.... but when viewing webpages DSL is faster.... I remember Cable seemed fast for webpages... then when I got DSL webpages were INSTANT....

So files cable was better...

Webpages DSL was better....

And yes Cable and DSL are faster than dial up... but if you're downloading from someone else that is on dialup it doesn't matter what you have, you can only download as fast as the dialup person... thats all I was trying to point out...

From my dealings on this issue, I have found that choosing between DSL or Cable Internet depends on largely where you live. None of them are created equally by any means. Your best advice would come from people that live in your area that have had experience with both. I hope this helps.

When anyone says the term DSL, I have to chuckle!

D.S.L refers to a size of the facial lips of a female, If they are really big and puffy they may be classified as D.S.L's!

Now they are really fast too!

What timbo said is 100% correct? This has always been a debate as to which is faster & the one constant was the fact that it depended on where you lived.

I live in NY & where I'm at my cable blows away DSL but others I know in other parts of the country say the opposite. I would do local research as that will give you the best answer.

Some will say the company I use for cable internet access is the best in the country speed & price wise & I'd have to agree but the thing that makes it work is the fact when they see alot of people on one node they cut it to make new ones so it doesn't get overloaded & we all can get the best possible.

As I said do some local research & also visit

www.dslreports.com

It is a great site I frequent as it has reviews, forums etc for tons of broadband providers not just DSL & your company might just be there & you can ask for yourself. I'm on there alot checking in with Optimum Online personally.

Have not had cable but on DSL (via my provider SW Bell) the download to upload ratio is 2:1.

Just installed a new cable modem in my apartment and pardon the expression but the cable speed pisses on DSL. Way faster.

To top it off, tonight I just finished installing a wireless cable router and access cards for our laptops. Can sit on our terrace with a brew, overlook the city and check out next weeks games at speeds faster than my old DSL.

:D :D

Omar,

I prefer cable as the download speed is much faster,

but I think a 19-21 year old blonde with a nice set, tanned, and with an esthetically pleasing face should make you go faster!
