This might be off topic a little bid......

I have a laptop and wanted to set it up so I have wireless connection to the internet. Main reason for doing this is I don't want my employer to know which websites I visit as our IT department knows everything we do on internet. Any suggestions?

jho - Do you really like to surf that much at work?

Reason I ask is it will probably be very expensive to do something like that. You are going to need a laptop wirless card from Verizon or similar service, plus pay their fees and such. Should be easy enough to look up on their website or a quick phone call should do the trick.

You could get a MAC laptop. They got the Airport card...my friend has one of those laptops and I wish I had one...no wires or anything to be on the net. Its great....

hellah if I understood his question he was talking about being at work? Which means he needs a seperate point of access to not go through his company firewall. Maybe I read it wrong I dont know.

However I did just install a wireless router in my place with wireless cards for both our laptops. It is so nice and SO fast.

i think your right ace. This indeed is a tricky thing to do. Maybe if he got Admin commands or got into the Mainframe maybe he could do something there...but I wouldnt even bother - for its far to risky for that stuff and shouldnt be putting the job on the line. But Iam interested to see if there is a way around it....

Thx guys,

Yes, I want to access the internet at work without going through my employer's firewall. I don't surf the net that much during work, but every visit to website is recorded in the company server, no matter how frequent you log on.

I realize it is going to cost more to set up this wireless connection, but just not sure which one to use. I heard of Ricochet, but I think their business went under. I believe they use wireless modem card.

How does a wireless router work?

I've had DSL/Cable/Fractional T1.

My max speed on my DSL was 416kbps, up and down. This one was costing me 60 a month through Northpoint (Bankrupt). Never had a drop in speed when it was online. I live about 3 miles from the phone company. My DSL line had considearble more downtime than my cable modem has ever seen.

My max speed on my cable modem is 4+Mbps on the download side, but they cap the upload at 785kbps. During peak hours it will drop to the lowest of 785kbp on the download side. This one cost 42 a month through Earthlink. I live about a mile from the cable company.

At work we have a fractional T1. I would be lucky to get to 200kbps. ISP really screw with commercial customers. Then again when you have 100+ people online it tends to have an effect.

The difference in the price was mainly my DSL was a Satic IP. I used to run a server with it. The cable is a Dynamic IP.

As far as I remember the reason the DSL and the telephone don't clash is because of frequency separation.

Just my experience. Yours may vary depending on location.

:)

Was programming my personal web page at work. Opened up port 21 through the firewall to upload and let me tell you, it wasn't pretty. Talk about an embarrasing phone call.
