http:// I was having my car serviced and while I waited in a waiting room there were several other people waiting as well ,one being a gentleman with his young son. We were all watching highlight's on the Democratic convention. The young boy was full of question's and when his father would try and answer the boy would respond with "why".The question was asked "What's a Democrat"? His father was very shy about answering , as the room was full of several other people and not being sure of their political affiliation he was hesitant to say anything. That's when nervous laughter started, and people began talking politic's. What I heard was somewhat confusing. Do people know WHY they are so loyal to a party regardless of the candidate? I would love to hear POSITVE reason's why people belong to a party as opposed to bashing the other party. I would love for people here to state why they are Democrat/Republican. My grandfather as an example is a Democrat and would not consider voting for a Republican under any circumstances. What is so weird about it is he is a homophobic. He is an old fashioned male chauvinist. He's a rasict. But 1 day out of each year he goes to the voting booth and flick's button's that opposed everything he say's the other 364 day's. I may be in the minority but I see that alot. If you have the time I would appreciate your thought's on the positive's of your party. If there is such a thing as a "swing" voter, what would you say to this person to sway them to vote for your guy(party). What are the positive reason's? Thank's in advance !!!

.................................................

I remember sitting on my grandmothers lap in her rocking chair and she told me that our family
were Republicans.

And I didn't even know what a Republican was but I knew it was important to her.

I find it hard to get past that at times.

I think thats how it gets started.

Me too, and as such I vote for the best candidate regardless of party affiliation. It's not my problem that the best candidate happens to be Democratic 96.8% of the time.

"It's not my problem that the best candidate happens to be Democratic 96.8% of the time."....he said with a feral smile on his lips that made grown men shake and run out of the room.

BTW.....any perceived danger with Sprios with the Oct trial hanging over his head?

BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!
This is simple.

Democrats have no problem forcing and ENFORCING their vision on YOU of how the world should work, how you should spend your money, and most importantly, what you should BELIEVE....

One party (democrats) wants to control
what I spend my money on,
what I believe,
what I teach my children,
how I discipline my children,
what I think of homosexuals,
what I think of abortion,
whether or not I can start a business,
whether or not I can smoke in a place I own, whether or not I can smoke week,
whether or not I am insured,
whether or not I believe in God,
whether or not I want my children to believe in God,
whether or not I can own a gun,
whether or not I can drive an SUV,
whether or not I can burn antique furniture to heat my house,
how loud I play my radio,
who is my doctor,
where I can park,
whether or not I want my children to hear about masturbation,
whether or not I want my children taught by homosexuals,
whether or not I want to hire a homosexual,
whether or not I want to rent to the unemployed,
where I invest my savings,
how I spend my money,
where I can enroll my children in school,
where I can live,
what I can do with MY LAND,

And these are just a sample of the things they want to control that are SPECIFIC to MY PATHETIC LITTLE LIFE.

The other party does not want to control these aspects of my life, all of which should be left to the markets and indivduals, not to a small group of elitist power mongers.

Vote liberatarian, then vote republican, if you can do neither then vote your freedom away with the socialists in the democratic party.

I am independent. I vote for whoever seems the more honest or who is saying the right things as I see it. Most times I find myself voting against someone rather than for someone. I do not blindly follow a party and do not understand why anyone would. I may lean more to one party on most issues.

Another answer is this

Keynes vs. Hayek.

Democrats are Keynesian and believe economy's should be planned and monitored with the use of fiscal policy. This worked well until the unforseen and (thought to be impossible) case where we had high unemployment AND inflation at the same time.

Hayek put forth the idea that monetary policy is the only job of the government (controlling the money supply) and that any other meddling by the government in the market would have adverse consequences.

History has sided with Hayek...which is why 96% of economists no longer take the keynesian view of economics.

So there is your ECONOMIC reason to never vote for a power hungry democrat, (although it's clear that Bush has no problem spending inordinant amounts of taxpayer dollars).

I get a kick out people like Stevie, that are EXTREMELY opinionated about politics, yet make all decisions on personalities rather than principles..

Alot of people think that a politicians JOB is to fix their problems. This is a joke. This is the game that they convinced you that you are playing, vote for the guy that gives you more.

This is how democracys fail. Greedy little non-thinking voters.

Good post, Lock, but your last sentence says it all and pretty much negates the whole point, at least regarding *this* election. And your other post with your list is kind of puzzling as well, given Ashcroft and all.

The two main differences I see are as follows: Defense and Taxes

Bush wants a strong defense and will do what he thinks is the right thing to do, even if France doesn?t like it. He also wants to make the tax cuts permanent.

sKerry?s plan is to put the UN in control of our national security and not do anything to defend the US unless ?we? have ?their? say so. Then his tax plan is to raise taxes on the top 2 percent of income earners to pay for more social spending. The premise here is that money is better spent when spent by government rather than the person who actually earned it.

No, I don't think so Auspice. I'm not really a big Olympic fan to begin with, but I would feel comfortable with a large balance even with his impending trial.

lock, interesting posts to say the least, kosar beat me to the punch, under your ideology how exactly due you explain bigger government & record deficit under Bush. The guy couldn't General manage a baseball team never mind a country.

Michael j to answer your question, the average person is to ignorant to read learn, or study their own ideals. They vote like their DADDY DID, much easier than using your own head. Actually same reason why most people coat tail rather than handicapp games themselves, lazy.

Lock, just curious since I don't know anybody else from South Dakota, curious of your opinions regarding Senator Timothy Johnson, if you have a few seconds.

Sen. Johnson is a crook....waged perhaps the dirtiest campaign in SD History

Dem party served food at voting booths of Reservations, bussed in out of state voters, and gave away hats and mittens to Native American children
