Thanks for clarifying dawgball. Anybody know what happens, or what the tiebreaker is, if we tie Slovenia(or England for that matter) for points and goal differential??? TIA.

Tie-breaker rules here: http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/world-cup-group-play-tie-breaking-rules.html

Scenarios (assuming both England and US beat Algeria):
1. England beats Slovenia; England and US advance
2. Slovenia beats England; Slovenia and US advance
3. England ties Slovenia;
3a. US beats Algeria by 2+ goals; England and US advance
3b. US beats Algeria by 1 goal; England and Slovenia advance

I think this is correct. Could be wrong.

But if they tie and we beat Algeria by 1 then we have the same GD than Slovenia...why would they advance over us? We did the exact same things they did. What's the tiebreaker after GD?

Here are the tiebreakers in order for Group play:

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

If US beats Algeria 1-0 and Slovenia ties England then it would come down to option g, but it will not matter if England doesn't beat Algeria.

A US win and they are in.
A US tie and they are in if the Eng/Slov tie unless it is by more than 2 goals than the US/Alg tie.

In other words a US win or 1-1 tie locks them in the next round.

I know it doesn't matter now that England shit the bed, but what the he'll is the difference between a-b-c and d-e-f??? It's all the same damn thing, isn't it???

This was incorrect until England just laid an egg.

Now the scenarios are (assuming we win the next game):
1. Slovenia beats England; Slovenia and US advance
2. Slovenia ties England; Slovenia and US advance
3. England beats Slovenia;
3a. England wins by 2+ goals; England and US advance on our better total goal differential
3b. England wins by 1 goal and US wins by 2+ goals; England and US advance
3c. England wins by 1 goal and US wins by 1 goal; England and Slovenia/US - whichever scores more goals in their final match. if equal number of goals - I don't freaking know!

If the next two games are both ties, we hope that our tie is at least only one goal less than theirs or better.

This could all be wrong. :)

It seems to be same thing differently worded.

Back to the topic. How big does that no goal seem for the US now??????

Not sure US can beat Algeria.
What if they lose and Slovenia beats or ties England.
With that goal:
Slovenia 5 or 7 points
US 4
Algeria 4 (tiebreak goes to US unless Algeria wins by 2 or more).
England 2 or 3 points.

Now:
Algeria jumps US if they beat the US.

US could have lost to Algeria and still advanced if they would have got the "W" today.

That was pretty long-winded compared to what they just showed on TV.

Their graphic said we definitely advance if we win.

And if we tie, we just can't be outscored by England by 2+ goals.

Fuck it. I'm pouring a drink!

WE GOT ROBBED!

Let's just say all these teams suck for letting so many games end up in a draw. Let's just advance one of them and let three advance from group G, the group of death :mj07:

England, what a huge dissapointment. US should be atop this group right now. I'd rather see all three of Ivory Coast brazil and Portugal then have 2 teams from this crap group advance.
