Well a new sport to Madjacks, but it is the one sport I make money on along with rugby, so for the people who know what snooker is, then I am going to post my picks over the next 17 days or so.

I am sure there are some Canadian snooker fans, thanks to the likes of Cliff Thorburn and Kirk Stevens, but realise pool is more of a bigger sport in the USA. However, there are more and more Europeans visiting these threads, so may be interested in the picks.

I would normally open a tournament like this with a outright pick or two. However, there is a case to be made for so many players this year. I would have bet Mark Williams had it not been for his damaged cue, but he is still short at around 4/1. If I was to have one outright bet then it would be Stephen Hendry at the 13/2 mark, as he has been in form all year, and loves the Crucible. Ronnie O'Sullivan has played into form the last month or so, and seems totally focused on this tournament. I could go on and on, but it is sure wide open.

1st ROUND PICKS

Joe Perry vs Sean Storey

Two players who have little chance of progressing any further after this first match. Sean Storey is a decent young player, who arrives here courtesy of the qualifiers. He has shown little in the few tournaments he has played in to date this year, and it says something about the calibre of oppostion he has faced, to say that Joe Perry is one of the better players he will play this season.
Joe Perry's form itself has been awful, after a good season last year, allowed him into a few tournaments. However, he is a little bit classier than his opponent in this match, and should have enough over 19 frames to beat Sean Storey.

2 Point Joe Perry at 8/11 with Paddy Power

Mark King vs Drew Henry

Mark King is a good player who has had a dreadful season to date. Will easily drop out of the top 16, unless he produces something special in Sheffield this fortnight. Suffers from lapses in concentration, but on his day can give anybody a game.
Drew Henry is another who has been poor this season. However, he has shown something over the longer matches. He had a good run in the UK Championship earlier this year, with victories over Stuart Bingham (9-7), Jimmy White (9-4), Stephen Lee (9-8), Ronnie O'Sullivan (9-8), before losing to Ken Doherty in the semi final. His easy 10-4 win over Barry Pinches in the final qualifying round got him to the Crucible, and a repeat of this kind of form could seen him through against Mark King. Drew Henry is value at odds against.

1 Point Win Drew Henry at 6/5 with Sporting Odds

Back tomorrow night with some picks on Sundays matches. :)

1st ROUND PICKS (contd)

Robert Milkins vs Graeme Dott

The young up and coming Rob Milkins faces relative experienced campaigner Graeme Dott, who has never managed to grab the limelight from Scottish rivals Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, and Alan McManus. He has been in poor form this season, and has struglled to win any of his matches to date this year.
Rob Milkins from has been impressive however. He has shown glimpses of form that means he is a player on the rise. Vitally however, he went through to the quarter finals of the UK Championship (one of the few other tournaments to have long frame matches), and claimed the scalps of Nigel Bond, Joe Swail, and Matthew Stevens on the way. More notably however, is that he breezed through the qualifiers for the World Championships, and seeme completely as ease with this best of 19 frame format.

1 Point Robert Milkins at 11/10 with Stan James

TV,

Glad to see you contributing to this thread. I have a few exceptions with your parlay....Matthew Stevens is too short at 1.36, although his game is suited to the long match format. Joe Swail has been in piss poor from all season, and may struggle against the unpredictable Maltese Tony Drago, while Paul Hunter is also too short at that price. Ali Carter comes to the Crucible in form, while Hunter altough, a class act, has a poor record at the Crucible.

Having said that, I wish you all the best with the parlay.

Keep the plays coming!!! ;)

RESULTS :

Joe Perry 4-10 Sean Storey
Mark King 5-10 Drew Henry

Firstly, Joe Perry was awful these last two days. He is a totally different player from the one that reached world number 13 last season. One thing guaranteed is that he will not be that high next season.

On a good point, Drew Henry won easily to put Mark King into retirement. King says that he is fed up of being stressed out, but I can think of a lot more jobs that will give him more stress than the job of a snooker pro! :D

One play on tomorrows games.

Stephen Lee vs Steve Davis

The nugget has been in great form this season, rediscovering some of his best snooker, which has put him well up in the top 16 for next season. Stephen Lee, a former World Number 1, has been in poor form and has failed to make any finals, which is a big insult to his ability.
Most backers will be on Davis tomorrow, as most would love to see Steve Davis competing in the latter rounds of the Crucible again. However, I am taking Stephen Lee to get the better of Steve Davis over nineteen frames. If Lee reaches anywhere near his best then he will have too much for Davis, who will try and rely on his safety play, to annoy the potting skills of his opponent. I feel Lee is slightly short at 1/2, but I cannot see this being a tight match, whichever way it goes, so I am betting Stephen Lee on the handicap, as I cannot see Steve Davis taking eight frames. I am looking at a 10-5, 10-6 victory for Lee.

1 Point Stephen Lee (-2.5) at 1/1 with Bet365

That is it on tomorrows matches. I was hoping to have a punt on Alan McManus against Nigel Bond, but see no value in taking McManus for the match, or even on the handicap. Dont think there will be a lot of quality in this match, or any break building. I think I would rather sit and watch a few episodes of Rex Hunt fishing, than watch this match, and that is saying something!!

In the other match, Higgins will have too much for Ian McCullough, although I expect him to put up some sort of fight.

Back tomorrow night with further picks. :)

Adding :

2 Points Stephen Lee to beat Steve Davis at 5/6 with Sporting Odds

Both players were involved in a close match this morning, which leaves the handicap bet in doubt but I think Lee will have a little too much tonight.

My first snooker bet of the tournament.
Lee wins 10-6 and covers the -2.5!

Cool!

Good call.

Graeme Dott 10-4 Robert Milkins
Stephen Lee 10-6 Steve Davis

A mixed day. Rob Milkins who was only 5-4 down over night, must have ate something bad in his breakfast, as he lost six straight frames early this morning to crash out 10-4.

However, Stephen Lee came back as expected tonight, and even managed to defy the spread, so we are now back in profit for the tournament.

1st ROUND PICKS (Contd) :

Jimmy White vs James Wattana

Two players who used to be at the high end of the rankings clash tomorrow, in which will be a perfect opportunity to gain a rare win. Jimmy White, still many persons favourite snooker player, is more accustomed to winning at poker these days, but he will find it hard not to fancy going through against James Wattana.
James Wattana did so much to popularise snooker in Asia during the 90`s. He was a top 10 player for many seasons, but has seemed to tail off over the last few seasons, and is a shadow of his former self.
Not much to point at in either players from this season. However, Jimmy will relish the big occasion, and with crowd support with him, he should get through to the 2nd round at least.

2 Points Jimmy White at 4/7 with Sporting Odds

I am also attracted by the spread offered to Jimmy White. Sporting Odds who obviously do not fancy White, have also set a big price. They expect James Wattana to take eight frames off Jimmy White. Given that I already fancy White to win the game, I do not fancy him to be invloved in a close match, and see a 10-6, 10-7 type scoreline in favour of the Whirwind. The 6/5 quote is too good to pass up.

1 Point Jimmy White (-2.5) at 6/5 with SportingOdds

Joe Swail vs Tony Drago

Joe Swail is a parshally deaf Irishman, who has had a dreadful season this term. We saw some kind of improvement in the last tournament, the Regal Scottish, where he beat World Number 1, Mark Williams, but a lot of that can be out down to MAark Williams having his cue destroyed by Irish airline, Ryan Air.
Tony Drago is a great crowd pleaser. The fastest player in the game, he waltzes around the table as if he is playing in one of the Maltese snooker clubs he attended as a boy, but this leads to a lack of concentration which has prevented him from ever being a top contender in snooker.
A 2/1 quote for Drago is very attractive against a player who is badly out of form. If Joe Swail leaves Drago chances, then he has the ability to punish his opponent. Drago missed the Crucible last year, but will relish being back.

1 Point Tony Drago at 2/1 with Coral Eurobet

Ronnie O'Sullivan vs Marco Fu

Perhaps the player with the most natural ability ever to pick up a cue, is a leading contender for this world championships, and is indeed the bookies favourite.
Marco Fu is the most recent of top Asian players to burst into the game, but has been held back a little after a blistering start to his career a few years ago. We have seen glimpses of that old form coming back, and he has already beaten the Rocket twice this season. I have seen a lot of tipping sites expecting him to run Ronnie close tomorrow.
Ronnie seems to be mentally geared to winning the tournament this year. He has won tournaments coming into this event, and although outplayed by Alan 'Angles' McManus in the recent Scottish Open, he was first to admit that his mind was not on that game, but totall focused on winning the World crown for the second time in his career.
I was surprised to discover this spread offered by Sporting Odds. They are gambling on Marco Fu taking seven frames off Ronnie. I see Ronnie winning by about 10-4, 10-5, and to stay within that spread.

2 Point Ronnie O'Sullivan (-3.5) at 8/11 with Sporting Odds

Great write-ups crooky! Any thoughts on Sullivan -4.5 (-120)? Only way I can get it on handicap.

Cheers
